After downhill skiing didn't work out (way too many people in the overflow parking where the attendant said he had never seen people have to park in the six years that he has worked there) so I put my skis back in the car and looked for another thing to do. After driving around a bit, I ran across a spot with a pull off and several cars parked with a rustic trail heading off (and up!). I started to climb with just my boots as it would have been too narrow for snowshoes, but should have grabbed my poles and yaxtrax. The steepness got me spooked and I turned around pretty much just before the area where they were ice-climbing. I should have gone up the rest to have watched. Next time.

Ended up at The Flume at Franconia Notch where I was comfortable enough that I had cell service and wouldn't be too far from the car if need be (I have the Emergency phone this weekend). Didn't really need the snowshoes, but wore them anyway as I had carried them around in my car for over a month and thought I might as well put them on. Would probably been better with just the boots and maybe the Yaxtrax.Oh well. Nice to be out in the woods on a pretty warm day in January and found some ice climbers out to watch for a bit.- 25
