Note
slept:5.5 (rest day)

today is a well deserved full rest day. a massage therapist is coming to the house. so sweet.

last night my right hip in front was pissed off. felt fatigued and a bit sore going to bed. it's a bit better this morning and hopefully it will be good to run tomorrow.

went to bed too late, got up for 1hr at 5:30am bc i've been doing that for a week. checked email then went back to bed until 8:30am. broken but better than none.

slept:7.0 shoes: Big Horn 08 Montrail Steak Yel

last run of the camp out rick's basin. good recovery run, all the bits feel good. ice bath worked it's magic.

Running hills (road) 5:48:02 [3] 25.8 mi (13:29 / mi) +4659ft 11:31 / mi

camp ended today after breakfast.

this workout was for bob who stayed around and is doing badwater this year. we hiked up teton pass twice! once on the 22 and the second time on the old teton pass road.

2:32 round trip asc 2329 ft on 22
3:15 round trip up the old teton pass road asc 2329 ft on the old road

for me this was great hike training. i'll call it running bc we ran down each time, but we only walked up.

Yoga 45:00 [2]

taught the campers a 45min yoga class so we had time for ATW after!

Strength Training (core) 11:04 [4]

ATWs for 20. took the campers through it, good to work up a pre-breky sweat after a good yoga stretch.. they loved.. and hated it!

Running (trail) 4:32:31 [4] 23.5 mi (11:36 / mi) +4957ft 9:40 / mi
slept:6.5 shoes: Big Horn 08 Montrail Steak Yel

long run with the campers. i rounded up the "fast guys". grand targhee up the road to lightning ridge and down mill creek in like 50mins or so. then we ran extra down into the teton canyon and along the river and again along the river when more of the group showed up. then back up. david took off as i was taking pics and the kid stuck with him. caught the kid but david missed the turn we talked about. so leo, the kid and i took the out and back that is also part of the course down to the roads past the cow trof on trail 132 and back. regrouped at targhee and pollished it off with the 2,000ft climb up fred's to the top of the ski resort.! sweet day.

my bits held together well. 1 or 2 shots of morton's early but that is normal then nothing. hip and knees great.

Friday Jun 27, 2008 #

Yoga 1:00:00 [2]

taught yoga class for the campers. it's 1hr for the rest of camp.

Running (trail) 1:54:38 [4] 11.5 mi (9:58 / mi) +1837ft 8:40 / mi
shoes: Big Horn 08 Montrail Steak Yel

aspen trail run in driggs with campers. awesome rolling terrain and beautiful singletrack.

i was again the leader of the "fast pack". chandler led out hot and i let him set the pace. lisa had told me to "hurt him a little bit". so at the 1/2 way point we did some lactic threshold 2min anaerobic/someone is chasing you pace uphill. then 1min easy then 1 mile at lactic threshold... just the beginning. leo didn't do that extra running so he turned at 1/2 way point. now we had a rabbit to chase with a good 10 min head start! we race paced until we caught him. it was great, chandler did awesome. he said "you broke me on that hill". but in the end he did in fact catch leo.

after the run they both laid in the shade like tired dogs. this camp is awesome.

Circuit (running) 45:45 [4]

after a quick recovery drink we headed to the track for some of lisa's drills

bouncing on trampoline with medicine ball with heals/out, butt kicks, high knees. then ran 400m track laps dragging a tire:
400m pulling tire in 2:11
400m after without in 1:40
400m cooldown in 2:13

jump rope, pushups, martial arts style leg kicks with hand weights, stadium stairs running/jumping/step ups.

bare foot heal. pigeon and duck walking and toe walking inching forward with toes.

Yoga 45:00 [2]

taugh 6:15am yoga class to the campers. very nice.

Running hills (road) 1:34:22 [3] 8.02 mi (11:46 / mi) +1076ft 10:26 / mi
shoes: Big Horn 08 Montrail Steak Yel

first real run at camp. ran the road from grand targhee down to the overlook (1,078 ft down) in 50:37 with the fast campers. then did drills and ran back up the 1,078 ft on the road.

mortons felt ok, hip was kinda there and at times i could feel a inner mid thigh quad strain type.

Circuit (running) 25:25 [3]

basketball side steps back and forth, karioka, butt heal kicks, toe touches, running backwards, full squat touch the ground jumps.. these put the work on my quads!

did all this at the most amazing overlook in ski hill rd on the way up to grand targhee with the best view of the grand, middle and south teton as our backdrop. stunning.

Running hills (trail) 52:07 [3] 4.5 mi (11:35 / mi) +1319ft 9:04 / mi
shoes: Big Horn 08 Montrail Steak Yel

scouting run with jay. then uphill and downhill running drills after video analyses up the road to the top of the ski resort, fred's peak.

Note
slept:6.0 (rest day)

taking today off.

i'm in the tetons to coach at lisa smith-batchen's ultrarunning camp in driggs idaho. today we are getting things ready for the week. camp starts tonight at dinner - i'm pretty excited to geek out all week coaching and running trail baby. weather here is perfect.

oh yeah and my body feels good. i'm going to try and do some yoga to loosen up a bit. didn't get much sleep with gabby, lisa's 2 year old crawling into bed with me at 5am. she's too cute.

Yoga 8:57 [1]
(rest day)

Hiking (trail) 59:18 [2] 4.91 mi (12:05 / mi) +453ft 11:06 / mi
shoes: 07 Hardrocks 8.5 black/red 007

1st session of the camp. easy after dinner hike to the saddle that is part of the grand teton 100 course. i ran the first 5 min to catch up and then hiked the rest with the two faster campers.

this is a 2 on intensity only because i could feel the 8,000 foot elevation.

Cycling (trail) 19:49 [2] 3.11 mi (6:22 / mi) +220ft 5:58 / mi
slept:10.0

easy mtn bike ride from camp spot #1 on grassy lake road (in the John D. Rockefeller parkway) to the trail head of glade creek.

locked the bike in a flurry and put my running gear on. craziest mosquitos i've ever seen in my life! insane and immune to the deet repellent i had on.

Running (trail) 1:53:48 [3] 10.5 mi (10:50 / mi) +935ft 10:00 / mi
shoes: Big Horn 08 Montrail Steak Yel

started run down closed road sign at camp #4 on grassy lake road. ran the glade creek trail south to teton nat park. this is a remote area, especially with the road closed so i was pretty scared of bears the whole time. ran slower bc of it and sang a lot. didn't see a thing. the terrain is amazing. there is a lollipop i was scouting but the right hand turn at the park entrance was overgrown. i saw it on the way out but didn't believe it to be the right one until the way back. since i'm still recoverying i didn't want to get in over my head and feel terrible as i have to be an active coach starting tomorrow at lisa's ultracamp! awesome run, sunny and beautiful. the tetons rock!

1:01:54 then turned around and negative slip by running back in around 56 mins.

first run since the race. everything felt good, except mortons neuroma. i forgot my toe spacer and paid for it on the rough trails. i didn't have any spunk but that is to be expected. right quad a bit tight and some muscle soreness left over but feeling good.

Cycling (trail) 14:29 [2] 3.11 mi (4:39 / mi) +43ft 4:36 / mi

ride back after was mostly downhill and i was riding easy dreaming of real food.

Cycling (trail) 1:06:11 [2] 11.37 mi (5:49 / mi) +453ft 5:37 / mi
slept:8.0

camped last night in rockefeller memorial parkway. rode mtn bike on grassy lake road (it's dirt) to the glade creek trailhead to scout for tomorrow's run and to get some easy riding in. then rode to the flagg ranch and got maps and came back. muscles are a bit sore, energy kinda low but not too bad. didn't have coffee or tea today.

i took an hour nap from 2-3pm after my second full on feed bag.

Sunday Jun 22, 2008 #

Note
slept:5.0 (rest day)

took today off. awards in the center of town was fun - i won a big rock from the tongue river. i then drove to the tetons.

legs are muscularly sore but i don't have any injuries or other issues - which is great. i stopped in thermopolis where the worlds largest mineral hot springs is and took a soak and stretched, felt great.

from buffalo, wy on route 16 (cloud peak skyway) is the most amazing drive up and down through the big horns. wow. then driving into the wind river canyon was awesome too. great drive that i'd love to road ride some day.

Running (trail) 18:00 [3] 2.27 mi (7:55 / mi) +262ft 7:08 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: 08 Montrail Odyssey sz8.5

drove out the tongue river road to the end where the aid station is and ran backwards on the trail. soo amazingly beautiful out there. i love the bighorn mountains. from trail head ran up the trail i think they call lower sheep. felt good.

Strength Training (abs) 7:32 [4]

finally did some abs but it's so close to race day i only did my favorite ATWs for 30.

Yoga 10:47 [2]

some good poses.

my glutes are tight from the walking lunges yesterday! need to do those more often i guess because i didn't do enough to think i'd be tight from it. 16hrs of driving in the last 2 days could have something to do with it too.

Running (trail) 24:09 [4] 3.3 mi (7:19 / mi) +653ft 6:10 / mi
slept:9.0 shoes: Big Horn 08 Montrail Steak Yel

ran the 3.3 mile loop at mineral ridge, good climb, short loop... felt pretty good. more energy than i thought i would. new streaks felt great with new insoles. still debating on what to race in.

Yoga 17:38 [1]

couple yoga sessions in the sun during my drive. one was behind an exxon.

Tuesday Jun 17, 2008 #

Note
slept:7.0 (rest day)

took the whole day off. it wasn't easy. left sisters and ended up camping at mineral ridge just off 1-90 on coeur d'alene lake. awesome spot.

Running (trail) 1:18:59 [4] 10.0 mi (7:54 / mi) +928ft 7:16 / mi
shoes: 08 Montrail Steak Yellow 7.5

ran the fleet feet trail bandit series run #2 - the kiwa butte crawl. started out easy running with fatboy, sean and sasha. felt good so i picked it up on the downhills. then at the last aid station i had a triathlete geek hanging on so i decided to race pace for the last 3 miles and dropped him.

the last 3 miles i ran in 18 minutes flat - 6:00 min miles - happy with that.

Yoga 24:55 [1]

Running (trail) 4:05:13 [2] 21.0 mi (11:41 / mi) +1289ft 11:02 / mi
slept:7.5 shoes: 08 Montrail Odyssey sz8.5

great easy run on the mckenzie trail with krissy and sean. there was lots of snow so were slowed down by that and trail/route finding.

we were 2,000ft lower than we have been running so i felt waaay better. also we didn't really run any vert so that helped.

Friday Jun 13, 2008 #

Running (trail) 1:46:05 [2] 10.0 mi (10:37 / mi) +928ft 9:45 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: 08 Montrail Odyssey sz8.5

super easy recovery run with rod bien. we were marking the course for sunday's 10 mile race so we stopped a lot to put up flags (watch ran non stop).

i'm starting to think the odyssey is my race shoe. it has more protection for the longer distance and it's a bit wider for more stability. my neuroma feels best in this shoe too.

Thursday Jun 12, 2008 #

Running (track) 43:06 [4] 5.63 mi (7:39 / mi) +36ft 7:37 / mi
slept:7.5 weight:145lbs shoes: 08 Montrail Odyssey sz8.5

i'm embarrassed to even post this as a track session. i wasn't lying when i said i'm tired. still not sure why, altitude? i just need to get through this week and then taper heaven all next week.

1.7 miles run to track warmup 15:15
1200 4:44
1200 4:42
1200 4:34
1.7 miles run home cooldown 13:51

no speed or energy at all, i felt like quiting the whole time.

Running (road) 5:31 [3] 0.8 mi (6:54 / mi) +10ft 6:49 / mi
shoes: 08 Montrail Odyssey sz8.5

run to park and back where i did yoga.

Yoga 10:20 [2]

yoga in the sun, in the park. awesome.

Note

ok taper starts today!

as of yesterday, exactly 1.5 weeks before the big horn 50 miler i had 90 miles in the past 7 days. i'm calling it and tapering from here. i'm tired, and it just makes more sense than trying to get 15+ for the next 3 days being this tired. the body needs to rest or i won't even finish the damn race. phew.

Yoga 11:02 [1]

Wednesday Jun 11, 2008 #

Running (trail) 2:24:43 [3] 17.0 mi (8:31 / mi) +2546ft 7:27 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: 08 Montrail Steak Yellow 7.5

run out at pine mountain (25 miles east of bend, or) with sean meissner and rod bien. sean was doing recon for a race he wants to put on. good times but a bit too much dirt road for my tastes. for the first time ever i almost threw up at the end. my stomach was in a bind. rod thought it was because meissner was running with his shirt off. not sure.. but i AM sure that they are fast and i am not. good run, great company.

after just 150 miles or so the superfeet w/nueroma bump have packed down the bump is almost gone. i added a patch of mole skin and it helped sooo much. i'm just going to add a patch to my sole custom footbeds. they are better insoles. also put a piece of mole skin between my toes and that seemed to help too. morton's was a non issue today but the trail wasn't very technical either.

hip didn't hurt but i could feel it a bit more than yesterday.

Yoga 21:10 [1]

Running (trail) 4:09:18 [3] 21.0 mi (11:52 / mi) +4606ft 9:50 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: 07 Continental Divides sz8

37 min to the top of grey butte in redmond, oregon. meissner dropped me (yeah he's fit for western states 100 this year!) and i knew the planned 38 miles was going to be long and tough. i had absolutely no spunk so i cut it shorter than meissner by a couple hours. there was walking involved and it sucked.

morton's nueroma wasn't great but the continental divides have waay more protection so that was good. i need to cut out the right heal cup a bit.

also felt some twinges in my hip flexor but no real pain.

meissner thought i was 'sandbagging' when i say i am not that fit right now. well on this run i think i proved it. the big horn 50 will be a different kind of challenge.

Yoga 27:45 [1]

finally got some quick yoga done while watching a movie at meisner's house. felt great. need to rest my bones.. we have a lot of running planned. =)

Monday Jun 9, 2008 #

Note
slept:6.0

rest day. no muscle soreness from yesterdays run is great, but i'm kind of tired.

started in salt lake city, flew to seattle, packed the van and drove to sisters, oregon. tired then stayed up too late chatting.

Running (trail) 59:49 [3] 7.1 mi (8:26 / mi) +1148ft 7:18 / mi
slept:7.5 shoes: 08 Montrail Steak Yellow 7.5

ran up little cottonwood with meltzer. 1/2 up 1,148 feet to the end of trail. then back down. karl dropped me on the way up, but i didn't have the energy to even try to keep up. on the way down he gradually increased pace until we were in full sprint. i was able to stay with him on the technical downhill thankfully.

Running long (trail) 5:02:17 [3] 24.0 mi (12:36 / mi) +4724ft 10:37 / mi
shoes: 08 Montrail Steak Yellow 7.5

ran the second 1/2 of the squaw peak 50 miler in provo utah. vivian park. aid station 6 up two big climbs, windy peak was cool at 9,307ft. blog coming soon, i got some great shots of the course. it's a bad ass race! i carried 120 oz of water from the start and ran with it the whole way as "training" rather than dumping it. i drank 62oz... not enough.

4,724 ft of gain, 5,207 of loss.

Running (trail) 1:57:53 [3] 10.5 mi (11:14 / mi) +2310ft 9:17 / mi

run w/meltzer from his house up bell's canyon. similar route to the one i took yesterday but the trail got steep and turned into a hike. perfect AT training. i'll be behind him like that for 281 miles in august!

highlanders with my superfeed morton's bump insoles worked fine. i like that i can really feel the trail in this shoe.

Running (trail) 1:30:07 [3] 9.87 mi (9:08 / mi) +1266ft 8:08 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: 08 Montrail Steak Yellow 7.5

overall energy today is very low once again. =(

planned run was aborted (no truck keys). ran from karl's house up to the river trail to bell's canyon. right on wasatch blvd then to hidden valley park. headed up a super muddy steep path for 15 minutes before it peetered out and i sort of expored and turned around a lot then ran back from reservoir.

Running (road) 12:29 [1] 1.4 mi (8:55 / mi) +43ft 8:40 / mi
shoes: 07 Highlander Black 8.5

run to the grocery store with backpack.

Note
slept:9.5 (rest day)

chillin at karl's in slc. working and just trying not to exercise. almost looked on google maps for a track nearby. almost got down to do some body weight stuff... but i'm fighting it. i've got good running planned for the rest of the week and i need a day off. overall energy seems low today even though i got more sleep than ever.

from slc up i80, parley's canyon. drove past lambs pass (where i ran sunday) to kimball junction in summit county. the route from slc to park city.

ran easy with meltzer, we both claimed to have tired legs.. although i'm the only one who ran like it. i didn't even try to keep up with him. we ran the glenwild loop to the coblestone loop and down the blackhawk trail on the way back. pretty beautiful terrain. everyone is talking about how much snow there still is. squaw peak 50 miler this weekend will be interesting.

all my bits felt good. tight hamstrings and sore glutes but holding together alright. most importantly NO hip pain. i had some left over Gu20 i figured i should use before it's a decade old. never again, it made my belly feel yucky the entire run.

Monday Jun 2, 2008 #

Running (road) 47:36 [1] 5.0 mi (9:31 / mi)

Cycling (road) 1:16:03 [1] 14.4 mi (5:17 / mi) +673ft 5:03 / mi

suuuper easy ride to and from roch's house for our run. the way back was like torture. i was burnt and had to ride straight into terrible wind the entire way.

there 31:22 w/184 ft
back 44:41 w/489 ft

Running (trail) 5:37:13 [4] 28.0 mi (12:03 / mi) +6375ft 9:54 / mi
shoes: 08 Montrail Steak Yellow 7.5

great run on the wasatch front 100 miler course with roch horton. amazing and tough terrain and i couldn't have asked for a better tour guide. it was very hot. i had a couple of lows lack of water but all in all i felt ok considering yesterday's hill session. i woke up with no soreness this moring from it though, but i just had no spunk in legs.

roch can climb, that is a fact.

from lambs pass (mile 53 on course) up a couple canyons, couple ridges in 2hrs 57min to big mountain pass (mile 39 on course) and back.
