Ice Climbing (Approach) 1:00:00 [2] 1.5 mi (40:00 / mi)

Hike into Arethusa Falls at Frankenstein Cliffs, Crawford Notch, NH with Richard and Nancy.

Our first look at the falls.

We crossed in front of the falls to get to some climbing. Shortly thereafter, massive ice fall would come flying down the open water and crash onto our path across the falls.

Hike back to car

Ice Climbing (climbing) 5:00:00 [3]

The ice wasn't good enough to lead. We set up a couple of top ropes, and did laps up several lines. It was a good workout - we each got in 7 pitches.

It was too warm at the beginning of the day (41F), but the temperature dropped throughout the day. By the time we broke down the anchors, our slings were frozen solid.

Richard and Nancy head into the woods to set up some top ropes.

And then rap down one of the lines.

Richard belaying.

knee felt a lot better. Seems like backing off the running the last few days has helped.

Ice Climbing (approach/return) 2:30:00 [2]

Decided our best option would be to go into Hungtington Ravine, where the best ice was last spotted. It was super warm and raining on Friday and Saturday, so all of the ice at lower elevations were washed away. No one wanted to do the Madison Gulf bushwack, so we started off the day eating breakfast at Pinkham notch, sorting gear, then hiking up to Huntington.

As we enter the "Fan", we encounter the giant boulders that are usually covered with snow.

Chris looks for the ice.

To get to the ice today would have required spending a lot of time winding through giant talus, lightly covered with snow and ice. And the ice conditions were wretched. Undermined by water. Potential for ice dams. If you look closely, one of the pillars on Odel's has a massive horizontal crack. Wouldn't want to me on it if it gave way and tumbled down into the Fan. At least thre wasn't any avalanche danger.

Odel's is the ice to the left of Pinnacle Butress.

Here's what Odel's should look like this time of year.

So we bailed on the climbing, and hiked over to Tuckerman's Ravine via the Raymond path.

Ice Climbing (approach/return) 1:30:00 [2]

Then we hiked out. There's a scale at Pinkham. Our packs weighed in at:

  • Richard: 27.5lb

  • Silvia: 31lb

  • Dave: 35lb

  • Chris: 45lb

Who wins?
