Ice Climbing (approach) 2:20:00 [4]

Foray to the "Lost Helmet Crag". New Hampshire finally got snow. The approach involved a nearly 3 hour bushwack with snowshoes to get to a glimmer of ice high on the south-east face of a tall crag. I broke trail the whole time, and even with snowshoes was fighting through knee to waist high snow. Probably didn't help that I had about 35-40 lbs of gear on my back...

Ice Climbing (climbing) 2:30:00 [2]

The ice we found was mostly sun-baked and unstable due to the southern exposure. I led up a easy, but unprotected grade 2 bulge and then up through an awkward squeeze chimney to the top; In all, only a 30-40 foot climb.

After leading the climb, I brought up David G and Geoff. From there, we set a directional and dropped the rope only a very unstable, but cool looking vertical drip, only 6 inches to 3 feet wide and about 45 feet tall. I took a couple runs on it, which was great fun.

I topped out after my last run, set up a rap, and descended the chimney.

Ice Climbing (descent) 30:00 [2]

Cruised down to end our adventure. So much faster going down hill...

Running 19:24 [2] 2.4 mi (8:05 / mi)

Since my running route was likely covered with snow and ice, I decided to wear my O-shoes this morning. What a joy to run along the Charles river with grippy shoes!

The paths were largely smooth, wind shaped contours - crusty snow with occasional ice patches. A times there was chopped up rough stuff where people had slogged through slush, and their tracks had frozen in place. I just cruised over and through it all.

Biking 12:00 [2]

Biking in snow. Fun! Good for balance training.

Biking 12:00 [2]

Snow changed to freezing rain. Fun biking home through giant slushy puddles.

Yowsa! (clearing snow) 2:30:00 [3]

worst type of snow imaginable. It was light powder in the morning, but after an afternoon wintry mix, it became water saturated slush.

Ice Climbing 5:30:00 [3]

A group of us (Nancy, Richard, Pete, Tom, and I) hired famous Canadian ice climbing guru and guide to do some steep waterfall ice climbing.

Barry is awesome; friendly, laid-back, no attitude, and an awesome climber. We spent the day at the Texaco amphitheater near Crawford Notch, NH climbing steep stuff.

7 pitches later, I was beat.
