Orienteering race 2:20:00 [4]**** 7 km (20:00 / km)
Race went well through first 4 controls. Conservative to #1, then started clipping along pretty fast to 2, 3 & 4. On the way out of 4, made a series of mistakes that killed my race:

  • poor route choice to #5
  • moved too fast, neglecting to check off features, hit a trail and made a 180 error
  • suspected something was wrong, but was in a state of denial and continued on in the wrong direction for way too long
  • finally realized my error, quickly executed a recovery plan, and took off without properly and solidly reoirenting myself

The consequence was that I spent the next 90 minutes trying to reorient myself somewhere in the middle of the Surebridge map under sometimes hilarious conditions. Finally decided to take a safety bearing home, tail between my legs. Never Again :-)
