Walking (hiking) 10:00:00 [3] 15.5 mi (38:43 / mi)

Another great hike in the Whites with magnificent weather. Total hike tool about 12 hours, with 2 hrs or so of rests. Gmaps-pedometer suggests 15.5 miles, the white mountain guidebook suggests 17.8, and Giovanni's GPS suggests 20!?!

Hike started at 6:15am near the town of Twin Mountain with 3 exciting river crossings. We then summitted North Twin, South Twin, Galehead, Garfield, and Lafayette. See route

Our party consisted of Geoff, Katia, Giovanni, and myself. At the beginning, the Italians were on the sleepy side so they were content to follow Geoff and me. After North and South Twin and Galehead, we separated from Geoff at the junction of the Garfield Ridge trail and the Galehead trail. Geoff would take the Garfield trail down to a car while Ktia, Giovanni and I would continue on the Garfield Ridge trail to the summit of Lafayette.

Around 2pm (6 hours into the hike), they woke up, had some food, and upped the pace. Periodically, Giovanni would fly down the steep trails, lightly bouncing off the odd and uneven boulders gracing the trails. It looked as if he were hiking on the moon, while I felt I was on Jupiter. Of well; the glories of getting older.

The upper part of the Garfield Ridge was spectacular as we felt the trees and broke out onto an exposed ridge line very similar to Franconia ridge. What a treat! The Italians followed me up the ridge to be polite (and also to ensure that they didn't have towait on the summit too long). About 2km to the summit, Giovanni took off and ran to the high point. Katia, initially surpirsed, took off after him,

After a short rest at the top of Lafayette, we descended down to the Greenleaf hut and then down to the trailhead. 15 minutes after we arrived, Geoff came by with the car we left at the base of the Grafield trail.
