Running 37:23 [3] 4.22 mi (8:52 / mi)

Tried running with an O-map. Took the Sturbridge map from last year's highlander (i.e., the '93 WOC course). It was incredibly difficult for me to read the map and plan a route on the run. I found 6-7 particularly hard. Guess I've found a good training activity; jogging with a map.

Running long 2:45:00 [2] 11.5 mi (14:21 / mi)

Around midnight on Saturday, I decided to see if I could catch a ride up to Vermont with Geoff to surprise Barb at an aid station. We arrived 3:30-4:00a. The night was clear and cool, and the stars were incredible. Geoff and I checked out the scene at the aid station.

Many handlers were there waiting for their runners to appear. Several runners were asleep on cots in the barn. There was an assortment of food and drink. A medical team was ready to weigh in runners as they arrived. It was neat watching the day arrive as runners appeared every 10-15 minutes.

Barb arrived in a flash.

In less than 10 minutes after her arrival, I was "pacing" her. Pacing is in quotes because for the most part, Barb was ahead of me having tapping into the early morning, "the race is almost over" energy reserves. Barb really flys down hill! And I was running with our near camera; probably the only one on the course running with a fairly sizable SLR.

The course took us through some really beautiful terrrain. While we were on trails of roads the whole time, the surrounding woods looked like they would be fantastic for orienteering; open forest, soft ground, beautiful woods.

Then blasted home, getting back to Cambridge around 12:30.

I think the only time I've orienteered in Vermont was for some A-meet 5-ish years ago? Wish there were more opportunities. Just looked, and found that the vermont green mountain orienteering club has (7 maps on-line. The schedule, however, is sparse....
