Running 1:00:00 [2] 12.0 km (5:00 / km)

Nice run with Rob up to Loxley Common recce-ing some of his new running routes. It was a great evening, felt like the first real nice summer evening so far...hope there are some more to come. Legs felt surprisingly OK after the weekend.

Note
(rest day)

I had a rest.

Running race 2:50:00 [4] ** 20.0 km (8:30 / km) +1000m 6:48 / km
spiked:11/13c

Capricorn day 2. Found out I had quite a large lead after day 1 so no need to push too hard today. Really good fun with the whole course criss-crossing Kinder, which meant some very tough underfoot conditions and some tricky navigation (or 'nav' as mountain marathon-ers call it). One particularly nasty leg took us through roughly head-high bracken for a km - my only solace was that both Mike and Rhys were also floundering in it. Made a few nav errors in spite of the excellent map - all the peat groughs were really well drawn - but felt strong all the way to the finish today. Won possibly the biggest and ugliest trophy I have ever seen, but is has had a few famous names on it over the years!

Event: Capricorn

Running race 3:40:00 [4] ** 32.0 km (6:53 / km) +1100m 5:52 / km
spiked:16/17c

Capricorn MM and a rare chance to do a MM in the Dark Peak. Pretty tough first day, I think I started a bit too hard, which was fine for the first 2.30 but I suffered on the last few kms which were through some rough bracken and heather. Still, happy with my time although I have no idea of any other results yet...started up Alport and then headed over to Kinder for a few legs at the end. Tomo is all on Kinder which will be tough and tricky. I feel like I'm cheating by coming home for a bath and comfort - I should be shivering in a tiny tent eating pot noodles.

Running 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

Just a weener to loosen up for the weekend's long un's.

Thursday Jul 26, 2007 #

Orienteering 30:00 [3] 5.0 km (6:00 / km)

Wow, I actually went orienteering. Sort of. Hanging some bog roll on the mines bit of Strines for Jen (and anyone else - Craney, Rach?) to practise some middle distance. Although the bog roll has probably washed away already in the pouring rain.

Running 40:00 [2] 8.0 km (5:00 / km)

Parked at Strines inn and legged it off before they could ask for my £10 parking 'deposit.' Got a bit stuck in the jungle on the way back.

Wednesday Jul 25, 2007 #

Running 40:00 [2] 7.0 km (5:43 / km)

Run round Loxley with Jen, legs not too bad after track.

Tuesday Jul 24, 2007 #

Track session 35:00 [5] 5.0 km (7:00 / km)

Hallamshire session. Bit late (or it started on time for a change) for strides so joined in half way through. Then 6x 500, 30 secs rest, 250, 2mins30 rest. I haven't been to track for quite a while now and I was expecting the worst, but I didn't run well at all, really fading on the 500s then struggling to up the pace on the 250s. My hamstring got a bit sore after 3 sets but stayed about the same after that so I carried on, other than that never actually felt too bad, just couldn't get myself moving any faster.

Running 55:00 [2] 10.0 km (5:30 / km)

To track and back home with Jen, Mike and Little Rob.

Monday Jul 23, 2007 #

Running 35:00 [2] 7.0 km (5:00 / km)

Steady run up to Bolehill and stables to loosen up legs. They feel pretty tired today.

Sunday Jul 22, 2007 #

Running 2:05:00 [3] 25.0 km (5:00 / km)

Long run starting at the mountain biking at Bamford rec, up to Bamford edge, Cutthroat Bridge, Back Tor, Strines, Ughill (class place name), Rivelin and home. The sun came out and I got really hot, started dreaming of a cold coke. Stopped off at Rivelin Inn before I could make it home. Bumped in to all manner of people, started the run with Clare, Kelly and Jen, saw Pete H and Rach on the way up to Back Tor and Dickie Wren at Strines. Very tired by the end.

Running 1:00:00 [1] 9.0 km (6:40 / km)

Taking it easy on the first and last part of the run.

Saturday Jul 21, 2007 #

Running 35:00 [2] 8.0 km (4:23 / km)

Road run in the rain from Grandparents' house down in Bristol. Feeling much better today.

Friday Jul 20, 2007 #

Running 40:00 [1] 7.0 km (5:43 / km)

pre-breakfast run up Loxley valley. I was in a bad way this morning, my legs were not impressed at all. Then headed down to Bristol, just beating the new wave of flooding - at one point the train had to go along some submerged tracks.

Thursday Jul 19, 2007 #

Running 30:00 [5] 5.0 km (6:00 / km)

Seemed like a great idea to go along to Hallamshire tonight despite having really sore legs after the fell race. Unsurprisingly it hurt. Middlewood Park, 3x2.40ish, 3x2.10ish with roughly equal recovery. A hilly loop part on grass, part on track. I felt reasonable for the first 4 reps then suffered on the last 2.

Running 35:00 [2] 7.0 km (5:00 / km)

Run out to the intervals and run home with Mike.

Wednesday Jul 18, 2007 #

Running race 30:00 [5] 7.0 km (4:17 / km)

Bamford fell race, hp and down Win Hill. Loads of DPFR there and a tough field. This was a bit of a shock to the system after a few weeks without any high intensity training. I started hard (impossible not to) but as soon as we hit the hill Little Rob, Phil and Craney moved away from me in a different gear. I proceeded to suffer all the way to the top and got passed by a few more to finish 7th, a full minute slower than last time I ran this race in 2003. Oh well, it was a nice evening and good to get out into the Peak.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)

Warm up and warm down along the road and path to Thornhill. Feeling pretty bad on the warmdown, legs and guts a bit of a mess.

Tuesday Jul 17, 2007 #

Running 35:00 [2] 7.0 km (5:00 / km)

Easy recovery run up to Bolehill and the stables.

Monday Jul 16, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

Spent most of the day wallowing in the Blue Lagoon, a geothermally heated rocky pool near Keflavik. Then headed home. This was the first holiday that doesn't involve any kind of orienteering that I have been on for about 10 or more years, and it reminded me that it is possible to have a good time without a map and compass. We didn't really intend to do so much running on our honeymoon, but it was by far the best way to explore and just kind of happened by accident. Now to readjust back to busy Britain...

Sunday Jul 15, 2007 #

Running 2:15:00 [1] 15.0 km (9:00 / km)

Hmmm, this was supposed to be a shorter run after yesterday's epic. We stayed in Hverdagerde and set off to run around a short hiking loop in the mountains, but it took us 30 mins to get about 1km from the hotel. It was a big hill, but surely the map scale must have been wrong...nothing that could qualify as a path, but plenty of cool scenery and a load more hot spots.

Saturday Jul 14, 2007 #

Running 3:15:00 [2] 18.0 km (10:50 / km)

Long run/trek around some of the trails in this amazing place. Over grassy meadows, wide gravelly stream beds, a couple of small mountains and a kind of ashy moorland with snow-filled gullies. Found a load of hot steaming holes in the ground and warm springs. The whole landscape looks as though it has been painted by an impressionist artist, the colors and shapes are so improbable. Pretty tiring, but a great day out. Would have been very romantic if we weren't staying in a small tent!

Running 30:00 [4] 4.0 km (7:30 / km)

Ended with a harder run up a steep and gravelly extra hill.

Friday Jul 13, 2007 #

Running 50:00 [2] 8.0 km (6:15 / km)

A morning walk around Gulfoss (biiig waterfall) then pushed on towards Lanmanalauger (on RobW's recommendation). Stopped off for a run up a small mountain near Hekla (big and very active volcano), but didn't make it to the top - as usual, it was a bit further than we expected...

Running 35:00 [3] 6.0 km (5:50 / km)

We had been a bit worried about getting in to Landmanalauger since it is accessible only by 4x4s along 30kms of dirt track. We chose a route with no fords to cross and ground our poor little Yaris over the ruts and sand. Made it to within a few hundred metres of base camp and carried our stuff the rest of the way since there was a big river in the way. I went for a short run up a hill as an appetizer for the next day, followed by a bathe in a hot river.

Running 1:15:00 [1] 11.0 km (6:49 / km)

Drove out of Snaefellsnes inland to Thingveller, where a massive rift has opened up as the American and European plates move apart. Ran along the rift to a waterfall and the site of the old Icelandic Parliament. Quite a few tourists around, bit of a shock after days of solitude.

On to Geyser (the original one!) and campled next to Strokkur (a big one that goes off every ten mins or so). A bit eggy but pretty cool.

Wednesday Jul 11, 2007 #

Running 1:40:00 [2] 12.0 km (8:20 / km)

Decided to tackle the biggie today - Snaefelsjokull, the biggest mountain in W Iceland with a glacier on the top. A worrying drive to a col along a steep rutted track then a long slog up to the snowline, where we picked up the snowcat tracks (for lazy tourists) and followed them to the top. Amazing views and a high speed descent on the soft snow. Felt really good not to be running on rocks today.

Followed by an evening walk along some amazing sea cliffs covered in masses of gulls, razorbills and arctic terns. We got a bit dive-bombed and Jenny bottled it.

Tuesday Jul 10, 2007 #

Running 3:00:00 [2] 15.0 km (12:00 / km)

Drove out along the N side of Snaefellsnes peninsula and had our first experience of Icelandic hiking routes. Picked one up a mountain that looked short and straightforward. Within minutes we had lost any sign that a human had ever taken that route, stumbled across some amazing waterfalls, then approached the mountain peak - a sharp ridge of loose shale with the occasional rocky outcrop. Made it most of the way before Jenny had a refusal (I was secretly quite relieved) and we bailed out for the long descent through flowery meadows.

Monday Jul 9, 2007 #

Running 1:00:00 [1] 10.0 km (6:00 / km)

Ran up a volcanic cone near Lake Myvatten (midge water - didn't quite live up to its name) then descended to some strange lava towers and arches. Looong drive afterwards West, camped the night in a windswept field overlooking the Arctic Ocean.

Sunday Jul 8, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

No time for training, but a tough itinerary of art galleries followed by an internal flight up to Akureryi. Picked up a car, drove north and went whale watching out of Husavik - nice calm sea, but bloody cold nonetheless. Saw some humpbacks at close quarters then some dolphins, really great!

Saturday Jul 7, 2007 #

Running 1:00:00 [2] 11.0 km (5:27 / km)

Reykjavik is my kind of city - small, not too busy and not many shops. We still went in most of them though. Went for an afternoon run to explore a bit further - saw an artificial geyser and the Pearl.

Friday Jul 6, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

Sorting out a few last minute things before heading off to Iceland. Arrived at our hotel in Reykjavik at about 1.00am.

Thursday Jul 5, 2007 #

Running 30:00 [3] 5.0 km (6:00 / km)

Ran along to the Hallamshire club house but had no intention of doing the session. Did the warm up with Jen and Kelly then headed for home in the pouring rain. Off to Iceland tomorrow for a belated honeymoon!!

Wednesday Jul 4, 2007 #

Orienteering 10:00 [3] 2.0 km (5:00 / km)

Some sprints in Graves Park with Jen to check out the ultrasprint map - I was worried that it would be incomprehensible to anyone other than myself, but Jenny coped just fine. It will be very difficult in a race situation though.

Orienteering 15:00 [4] 4.0 km (3:45 / km)

SYO sprint from Ruskin planned by Mike. Fun course but I was thoroughly unmotivated.

Running 30:00 [3] 5.0 km (6:00 / km)

Jogging at Graves Park and to Ruskin.

Tuesday Jul 3, 2007 #

Track session 25:00 [5] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)

For some reason I decided it would be a good idea to go along to Hallamshire. Got half way through the strides and drills and it suddenly seemed like a less good idea. 1km in 3.00 followed by 5x200, rest, 5x200, rest, then I called it a day.

Running 55:00 [2] 10.0 km (5:30 / km)

To track and back all on by own. Saw the aftermath of devastation from the Great Sheffield Flood II - most depressingly a load of ruined barrels of Kelham Island ale outside the Fatcat.

Monday Jul 2, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

Day off to lick my wounds. This is a frustrating end to a winter and spring that went so well, and yet another WOC missed after my dsq in the long last year. But I guess that's sport and it wouldn't be worth doing if it was easy. Now to find some new challenges for the summer and secretly plot how to take over the world next year...

Sunday Jul 1, 2007 #

Orienteering race 40:00 [5] **** 8.0 km (5:00 / km)
spiked:23/28c

WOC middle test. Tried to galvanize myself into action, but failed miserably. Constant worry about running speed leading to pushing too hard and mistakes and blowing up physically. Pretty depressing experience on what was a great course and a great area.

Running 20:00 [2] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)

Long warm up, but no warm down.

Long drive back to Sheffield with 3 disappointed people and one very happy person - nice one Craney, really glad you pulled it out!
