Running 20:00 [1] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)

Tried to loosen my stiff legs. Failed. I thought I was getting pins and needles all over but then I realised that it was raining very slightly, even though there wasn't a cloud in the sky. weird.

Thursday Aug 30, 2007 #

Running 1:10:00 [3] 15.0 km (4:40 / km)

Very sore muscles, but thought I'd go along to Hallamshire anyway. Set out up Loxley Valley in Jason's wake (he was 'jogging' to the start of his session) then cut off over the hills across Stanington and back down Rivelin with Rob and Mike. I'd like to think that the pace didn't drop too much after we left Jason, but it probably did. Now my legs hurt even more.

Running Drills (running drills) 30:00 [4] 4.0 km (7:30 / km)

Had no plans for the day and Mike suggested trying out some running drills on Jubby's recommendation. I thought this would involve doing the occasional burst of effort and generally poncing around like a sprinter, but unfortunately not. Dynamic stretches, drills and then 10x150m with jog back recovery, focusing on good technique rather than speed. Speed or no speed this felt very hard by the end and I now have big knots in my calf muscles. It must be good for you if it hurts that much.

Running 50:00 [2] 10.0 km (5:00 / km)

Run out to track and back, bit harder than normal because I was late. Some pikey has nicked bits of metal out of the spider bridge so it's shut - surely there must be better places to find scrap metal?!

Note
(rest day)

Went to pick Jenny up to head out to the Eyam fell race. It took her about 10 seconds to talk me out of it and we came home and sat around instead. Then felt guilty all evening, but probably a good decision, niggles still niggling.

Monday Aug 27, 2007 #

Running 40:00 [1] 7.0 km (5:43 / km)

Jenny's flight home from Kiev was delayed so never made it to the white rose. We went for a jog along Stanage instead to check out some paths for the 'Exterminator.'

Sunday Aug 26, 2007 #

Running 45:00 [2] 8.0 km (5:38 / km)

Easy with Mike and Rich up Rivelin. Sore gluts.

Saturday Aug 25, 2007 #

Running 1:20:00 [3] 18.0 km (4:27 / km)

Long run with Mike, Rich and Nails. Felt pretty rubbish this morning after a few too many beers last night, but for some reason the pace got quite fast straight away. Win Hill, Lose Hill, Jagger's Clough, Win Hill. Nice day for it and Nails and I took a quick dip in the reservoir to cool off at the end. Ate some blackberries.

Running 40:00 [5] 7.0 km (5:43 / km)

Some hard bursts up the hills, sabre rattling with Nails. Don't know if it really was level 5, but it certainly felt like it.

Friday Aug 24, 2007 #

Running 25:00 [3] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

Didn't plan to go running as I was tired this morning and worried about my strange hip problem after last night's hard run. Well I guess it was a kill or cure effort and it hasn't killed it...felt really good today and the sun was shining. I ran quite hard completely by accident.

Thursday Aug 23, 2007 #

Running 1:20:00 [3] 16.0 km (5:00 / km)

Decided to go along to Hallamshire and see what was going down. Intervals seemed like a baaad idea so went for a 'steady' run with the John Cox crowd. He bowed out with an ankle tweak after a few kms so me, Rob n' Mike lead out through Wharnecliffe and Beeley at the usual ever-increasing pace. Not so steady then, but a nice run nonetheless.

A little 1.20 run looks rubbish in the graph when it's next to a big 6.40 jog.

Wednesday Aug 22, 2007 #

Running 1:00:00 [2] 11.0 km (5:27 / km)

Run with Rob and Rich around the back of the ski slope for a bit of a change. Still some bits of rubbish dump but it's definitely getting nicer up there. Would have been a bit shorter if the bridge we were intending to come back on hadn't been washed away in the floods...had to follow a path along the river all the way to the stadium to find a way out. Aware of a strange soreness inside my pelvis. hmmm.

Tuesday Aug 21, 2007 #

Running 50:00 [2] 9.0 km (5:33 / km)

Easy jog with Rob and Mike up Loxley Valley. Easing off the legs which are still pretty sore. Felt good otherwise though.

Note
(rest day)

Still resting today, although legs are a lot better. Just left with a stiff calf and SI now. Might consider some more exercise soon...spent much of the day trying to follow WOC online, hope the coverage improves for the finals. Nice one to Jen and the rest of the team!

Event: WOC 2007

Running 6:40:00 [1] 16.0 mi (25:00 / mi)

Bob Graham supporting. Thought about sitting around moping all weekend, but decided to head over to the Lakes with Middle to support Chappers and Bill on the BG. Somehow forgot my tent on Friday so slept for a (very few) hours in the car then an early start to meet them at Dunmail Rise. The weather was as bad as it could be in August - no visibility and constant rain - so it was always going to be a tough day out for them, the sort of day when you wouldn't dream of leaving a nice warm coffee shop to head up a peak, let alone 42 of them. Rob and I ran with Bill round leg 3, a long and rocky one that crosses Scafell Pike on the way to Wasdale.

I thought what we were doing was pretty stupid until we met a group of chavs on their way down from that summit dressed only in sodden jeans and hoodies - nuts. All was well until Lord's Rake, where we took a wrong turn before the summit and ended up following a narrowing rocky ledge until it petered out in a sheer cliff disappearing off into the mist. Managed to rectify the situation with some backtracking and scrambling but lost a bit of time there.

Really glad that Bill went on to complete showing remarkable stoicism. I really feel for Chappers, who put everything into it but had to pull out after about 15hrs. Very bad luck but I'm sure he'll go on to do it sometime soon, hope I can support him then!

My legs are now even more screwed.

Note
(rest day)

Ouch.

Running 7:15:00 [2] 62.0 km (7:01 / km)

Started off on a 7 day attempt at the Pennine Way long distance footpath today, day 1 Edale to Hebden Bridge. Thought it would be a good way to divert myself while WOC was going on. Set off at 8 from Edale feeling quite optimistic. 5 minutes in it started chucking it down with rain and a strong N wind (I was going N) and didn't really let up much for the whole day. Nonetheless I felt pretty good for the first 3 hrs or so.

My in-laws kindly met me for lunch and a welcome chance to shelter in their car, but after that it all went downhill...IT bands tightened up, SI joint got stiff and after about 5 hrs I was in a lot of pain. Saw out the whole day but the last few miles were a real killer. Rosie and Lee provided food, a hot bath and a bed for the night, but this morning my legs were still screwed so I threw in the towel and made my way home with my tail between my legs. Hmmm, might head over to the Lakes for a bit of BG supporting if my body is up to it...

Tuesday Aug 14, 2007 #

Running 30:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)

Drove to track to pick Jenny up and did some jogging about in the rain. Pretty quiet there tonight.

Monday Aug 13, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

Very tired, paying back the debt from last week's fun.

Sunday Aug 12, 2007 #

Running 45:00 [1] 4.0 km (11:15 / km)

Didn't intend to leave the house today, but Jen convinced me to go out to Burbage mines with her. I jogged about hanging bog roll and cheering, while she ran o'ing intervals in the heather. Then lunch in Outside.

Orienteering race 55:00 [5] ***** 11.0 km (5:00 / km)
spiked:29/30c

Day 6, Anagach. Feeling somewhat jaded by the time I started my warm-up. Bumped into Stan and Allan at the start, whose reminiscing about past WOC glories got me fired up. Started hard and felt like I faded towards the end, but no mistakes so a good result today. My first win in a Scottish 6 Day!

Running 25:00 [2] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)

Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain. Then a looong drive home with GG with a brief stop-off to watch the nightlife in Carlisle. Scary.

Friday Aug 10, 2007 #

Orienteering race 35:00 [5] *** 6.0 km (5:50 / km)
spiked:14/15c

Day 5, Camerory. Not the best terrain and very physical. Lost a load of time at a control (one of several) that was in the wrong place. Then ran very hard to minimize the damage - fortunately for me most others lost time as well. 2nd behind Duncan and around 6 mins up overall.

Running 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

Still not raining...

Running 10:00 [3] 2.0 km (5:00 / km)

Hung out at the celdieh (?) party then legged it back to the campsite.

Thursday Aug 9, 2007 #

Orienteering race 1:00:00 [5] ***** 10.0 km (6:00 / km)
spiked:26/28c

Day 4, Culbin. Really nice course and terrain, but not a lot of sparkle today...couple of small mistakes on the first and last controls but otherwise OK. Floundered in the heather. Pretty far down on GG who turned out for a celebrity appearance. Also lost a precious couple of mins to Allan.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

Almost sunny.

Wednesday Aug 8, 2007 #

Running 25:00 [1] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

Rest day and much needed after drinking a lethal cocktail of, well, cocktails the night before. Special thanks to Oleg for the banana surprise. Chilled out at the beach (not quite as literally as Ben) and went for a half-arsed jog from the event centre. The sun actually shone today.

Tuesday Aug 7, 2007 #

Orienteering race 1:25:00 [5] **** 16.0 km (5:19 / km)
spiked:23/25c

Day 3, Uath Lochans. Long race today on a great area of tough forest. Started almost last and had a great run, just a few small mistakes.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

It was raining again.

Running 15:00 [3] 3.0 km (5:00 / km)

Early morning/late night run back to the campsite. Bumped into about 20 drunken orienteers making a citizens' arrest of a couple of would-be bike thieves.

Monday Aug 6, 2007 #

Orienteering race 35:00 [5] **** 6.0 km (5:50 / km)
spiked:10/10c

Day 2, Craig Buie. Middle distance course with strange planning, few controls and easy long legs with just a few tricky ones. A good run with no mistakes, ran hard all the way, scraped a 6 sec victory over Allan Mogenson, not exactly increasing the overall lead...

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

Jogging with Nick B (in the rain).

Sunday Aug 5, 2007 #

Orienteering 1:00:00 [5] **** 11.0 km (5:27 / km)
spiked:22/24c

Scottish day 1, Alvie. Up early setting up planetFear and wasn't really sure how motivated I would feel...up hill all the way for the first few legs then great, open forest and easy downhill orienteering. Really nice terrain and felt better and better all the way through the course. Missed the last one in full view of the finish field, but a good run and 1st.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)

Lots of warm up not much warm down, it was raining.

Saturday Aug 4, 2007 #

Orienteering 35:00 [2] **** 5.0 km (7:00 / km)
spiked:10/11c

Drove up to Scotland from Garrigill, stopped off at Loch Vaa for a bit of light training. I got lost.

Friday Aug 3, 2007 #

Running 30:00 [2] 5.0 km (6:00 / km)

Easy up to Bolehill. Then heading North on the way to the 6 day!

Thursday Aug 2, 2007 #

Running 20:00 [5] 4.0 km (5:00 / km)

Hallamshire session at Wisewood: 6x loop of about 1.30 with about equal recovery on flat grass. Felt OK really, still a bit of tiredness in my muscles but nothing too bad. Skipped part II which was sprints.

Running 30:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)

Run up to the session and back.

Wednesday Aug 1, 2007 #

Running 40:00 [2] 8.0 km (5:00 / km)

Nice little run up Rivelin with Roberto.
