Monday Dec 31 |
 | Running 40:00 [2]7 km (5:43 / km) | |
| |
| Steady morning run up Loxley, feeling tired. Intended a second session before the evening festivities but it never quite happened...good party at Kath and Dave's tho. |
Sunday Dec 30 |
 | Running 1:35:00 [3]20 km (4:45 / km) | |
| |
| Run with Rob up the side of Stannington, down into rivelin, round the back of the reservoir, along the top edge of rivelin rocks and back past the Robin Hood. Very nice day to be out, bright and sunny and even quite warm. Legs tired to start with but felt good by the end. |
 | Climbing 1:00:00 [1] | |
| |
| A couple of hours bouldering at the works with Nails and the girls. Nails is getting it back quite fast so he was pushing the boundaries a bit. A lot more physical overhangy type stuff today. |
Saturday Dec 29 |
 | Running race 37:00 [5]10 km (3:42 / km) vdot: 56.9 | |
| |
| Sheffield Open XC in Graves Park. Not a nice course and a very windy day so you were either running uphill or into the wind, it felt a bit like the eternal uphill in that Escher painting. Very small field but ended up tussling all the way with Rick and a couple of others, finished 5th. Rob ran well for the win and Randy slacked off. Good Hallamshire dominance for the team prize. |
 | Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]4 km (6:15 / km) | |
| |
| Jogging the course and then running around trying to keep warm waiting for the delayed start. |
| |
| C • Me? 3 |
 | Running 40:00 [2]8 km (5:00 / km) | |
| |
| Home with Rob and Mike. Heroic effort up Blake st by Mike to round off his century. |
Friday Dec 28 |
 | Running 40:00 [2]7 km (5:43 / km) | |
| (rest day) |
| Steady run up to Ashgill Force (big waterfall). First bit was wet and windy along a road, then back along some footpaths with the wind behind. The waterfall was in full spate, but Jen insisted on going behind it anyway... |

Thursday Dec 27 |
 | Running 1:40:00 [2]17 km (5:53 / km) | |
| |
| Run along Hadrian's Wall from Haltwhistle to Housesteads with Jen and my Dad, joined on the last bit by my Mum. Nasty weather when we set off but was OK by the time we were running. A wind assisted effort. |
 | Running 30:00 [3]6 km (5:00 / km) | |
| |
| Evening run on the roads around Garrigill. In the rain with a small head torch, it was like an out-of-body experience since you could only see a little circle of wet tarmac floating in front of your eyes. |
Wednesday Dec 26 |
 | Running 55:00 [2]9 km (6:07 / km) | |
| |
| Run around Strenshall Common with Jen and Steve. |
 | Orienteering 20:00 [2]3 km (6:40 / km) | |
| |
| A bit of orienteering; a few controls from some event and then a contour only section. The contours on Strenshall are about 1m interval and this bit was mainly form lines, so it was more of a compass and pacing exercise. I was rubbish... |
 | Running 50:00 [3]11 km (4:33 / km) | |
| |
| Run back to York from Strenshall along the Foss Way. Nice route, but I started to get pretty tired and a bit spaced. I thought I would never feel hungry again after Xmas day but I needed the bubble & squeak by the time I got home. |
Tuesday Dec 25 |
 | Running 40:00 [4]10 km (4:00 / km) | |
| |
| Foxdahl intervals up the ings from Jen's house in York. 10 reps of 3/1, pushing hard but not killing myself. Slippy and slidy on the flood bank. Followed by a great Xmas dinner. |
 | Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]3 km (6:40 / km) | |
| |
| With Jen out to the Ings and back. |
 | Running 45:00 [2]9 km (5:00 / km) | |
| |
| Nice and easy evening run around the city walls. |
Monday Dec 24 |
 | Running 1:25:00 [3]16 km (5:19 / km) | |
| |
| Early morning run from home before setting off to York. With Jen up through Loxley Common then down to fisheries, spoon lane, Rivelin. |
Sunday Dec 23 |
 | Orienteering 35:00 [5]6 km (5:50 / km) | |
| |
| It's been ages since I've done any 'real' orienteering that's not around Venice, on a map that I made, or on Burbage in minging weather, so this was a lot of fun. Score event on Royds Hall planned by Dickie Wren. Pretty mad in a mass start of about 100 people and a surprisingly good area. |
 | Running 1:15:00 [2]12 km (6:15 / km) | |
| |
| Warm up for the orienteering then a run from Royds Hall to Rosie's house along the Calderdale Way. Really nice sunny, crisp day. Had an argument with a farmer when I tried to follow the footpath through his farmyard and got completely lost when I reached a wrong join on the map I had created from dowloaded bits of OS. It looked like all the roads and paths joined up but it was about 3km out on a parallel valley. |

Saturday Dec 22 |
 | Running Drills 15:00 [4]1 km (15:00 / km) | |
| |
| Running drills and strides in Pensford, nr Bristol. Short, sharp session on a flattish field. Nice misty morning. |
 | Running 25:00 [2]4 km (6:15 / km) | |
| |
| Steady run from Grandparents' house up a big hill to find a flat place for some strides. |
Friday Dec 21 |
 | Running 40:00 [2]7 km (5:43 / km) | |
| |
| Xmas card delivery run, not quite as complex route as Mike took, but it did involve a big hill early in the morning. Blew away the cobwebs from the Hallamshire do last night. |
| |
| C • Card deliveries 1 |
Thursday Dec 20 |
 | Running 25:00 [5]4 km (6:15 / km) | |
| |
| Hallamshire session, Hollybush Hills. 3 sets of 3 different kinds of reps - flat and up, up and flat, then up and up. The last climb was a killer and my legs were so full of lactate that I could barely stagger to the top. Shouldn't have been fun, but it sort of was. |
 | Running 35:00 [2]6 km (5:50 / km) | |
| |
| To club house, to the session and home. |
Wednesday Dec 19 |
 | Running 40:00 [2]7 km (5:43 / km) | |
| |
| Steady up Loxley valley with Jen. My legs felt very flat today. |
 | Climbing 1:00:00 [1] | |
| |
| Another full-on session this time mainly with Gareth and Nails. Just about finished off the blues and had a crack at a load of others. |
Tuesday Dec 18 |
 | Track session 45:00 [5]10 km (4:30 / km) | |
| |
| Wow this was a toughie. Strides and drills then 6mins, 5mins, 4mins x2 with two mins between runs. All very confusing with some of the runs around the outside of the track including a ramp, sharp u turns and running the opposite way around. I guess this made it less monotonous but it still felt like a long session. The two 5min reps were all on track and I was a few paces short of a 5 min mile on both of them. |
 | Running 55:00 [2]10 km (5:30 / km) | |
| |
| To track with Mike and back with Rob and Rob as well. Dead. |
Monday Dec 17 |
 | Circuits 40:00 [3] | |
| |
| ShUOC circuits, with the extra excitement of christmas music AND going clockwise around the room. |
 | Running 55:00 [3]11 km (5:00 / km) | |
| |
| Late leaving the house so very speedy run to S10 then a run out to Crosspool with Nails and Little Rob after the session. |
Sunday Dec 16 |
 | Running 40:00 [3]8 km (5:00 / km) | |
| |
| Nice run with Rob out to Wharnecliffe again, meandering around some of the smaller trails in the middle. Rob kept glancing at his Garmin and pushing the pace so we weren't hanging around! |
 | Running 40:00 [4]9 km (4:27 / km) | |
| |
| Pushing a bit harder on some sections, esp on the uphills. |
Saturday Dec 15 |
 | Running 2:00:00 [3]24 km (5:00 / km) | |
| |
| Run with Al from home out to the far end of Wharnecliffe and back through Greno. Really nice morning for it; cold, crisp and frosty. Needed to keep moving at a decent pace to stay warm. My longest run for a while, need to do a load more of this over the next few months. |
Friday Dec 14 |
 | Running 35:00 [2]6 km (5:50 / km) | |
| (rest day) |
| Dusky recovery run out to the stables and back. |
Thursday Dec 13 |
 | Running 35:00 [5]7 km (5:00 / km) | |
| |
| Hallamshire session at Wadsley Church. Long fig of 8 with an extra half run behind partners at the end of each, i.e. long reps with not much recovery. Running hard for 4, quite hard for 2, then recovery for 3. 4 reps. Very cold and icy, esp on the sharp corners. |
| |
| C • I guess.... 2 |
 | Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]5 km (6:00 / km) | |
| |
| There and back via the clubhouse. |
Wednesday Dec 12 |
 | Running 40:00 [2]7 km (5:43 / km) | |
| |
| Lunchtime Loxley run with Jen. |
 | Climbing 1:00:00 [1] | |
| |
| Climbing at the Works. Hardest session yet trying to get as far round the blue circuit as possible. Candyman was blazing the trail tonight and me. Al, Jenny and Kim were trying to match him. Couldn't actually hold onto the wall by the end and struggled to open the car door afterwards. |
Tuesday Dec 11 |
 | Track session 30:00 [5]6 km (5:00 / km) | |
| |
| Hallamshire session, strides and drills then 4x1500 off 5.50, so very little recovery tonight. Felt surprisingly OK, 4.44, 4.49, 4.50, 4.52. Icy on the top bend and very cold air, was hard on the lungs. |
 | Running 55:00 [2]10 km (5:30 / km) | |
| |
| Track and back with Al and Danger. |
Monday Dec 10 |
 | Running 45:00 [2]8 km (5:38 / km) | |
| |
| Lunchtime run with Seline up to Bolehill, stables, down into Rivelin and back down the valley. Nice day and needed this to clear my head. |
| |
| C • Happy Birthday 8 |
 | Circuits 40:00 [3] | |
| |
| New exercises and everything. ShUOC were a bit thin on the ground tonight...strange. |
 | Running 40:00 [2]7 km (5:43 / km) | |
| |
| Run to S10 and back plus a bit of warm up and down. |
| |
| C • Three sessions? 2 |
Sunday Dec 9 |
 | Running race 35:00 [5]10 km (3:30 / km) vdot: 60.7 | |
| |
| S Yorks XC champs near Doncaster. Very flat and boring course around some fishing ponds. I couldn't understand why I was ahead of some of the usual crowd after the first 2 laps, but about half way round lap 3 I realized I had probably gone off too hard. Hung in there for the last lap and managed not to drop any places so a decent race. Good running from the Hallamshire team inc. Andy in 1st and Phil in 3rd. I guess I was about 7-8th? Given the choice between an orienteering race and an XC today I chose the XC. Not sure I would make the same choice again... |
 | Running warm up/down 40:00 [2]7 km (5:43 / km) | |
| |
| Running the big lap before and after plus a bit of spurting around. |
Saturday Dec 8 |
| |
| Event: ShUOC Chasing Sprint and Captians Memorial |
 | Orienteering 25:00 [4]4 km (6:15 / km) | |
| |
| Pre run of the ShUOC chasing sprint final. I hate running on my own maps, I spend the entire time noticing things that could be better...It was chucking it down with rain, which was quite surprising given that it must have been about -5. Nice one to ShUOC for putting on the event, everyone who stayed for the final seemed to really enjoy it. Everyone who went home because it was raining missed out on a great race. |
 | Running 40:00 [2]7 km (5:43 / km) | |
| |
| Ran out to watch the last few controls of the mens final, then ran back out to watch the end of the womens final. Thoroughly wet and cold by the end of that. |
Friday Dec 7 |
 | Running 45:00 [3]9 km (5:00 / km) | |
| |
| University, Crosspool, Mike's path, doggers' corner, Stables and home. Blowing a gale and had to move fairly swiftly just to keep warm. Felt OK today. |
Thursday Dec 6 |
 | Running 20:00 [5]4 km (5:00 / km) | |
| |
| Hallamshire intervals, trickets hills. Absolutely chucking it down with rain and windy. Still feeling pretty flat from the weekend but thought I'd have a crack at it and felt fine once I got going. 3 sets of 4 hills, the long ones were a killer. |
 | Running 40:00 [2]9 km (4:27 / km) | |
| |
| Club house, trickets and home. Sopping wet. |
Wednesday Dec 5 |
 | Running 40:00 [2]7 km (5:43 / km) | |
| (rest day) |
| Jog up Loxley Valley with Jen. Felt totally flat today, don't think my body was too happy about last night's track session so soon after the 10km. |
Tuesday Dec 4 |
 | Track session 35:00 [5]7 km (5:00 / km) | |
| |
| 'fun' session tonight. 3 sets of 500, 400, 300, 200 off 40 secs with 2 mins between sets. It felt easy at first, but the last set felt very hard. Followed by a bit of jogging and then 10 mins of race and chase with Al and Mike around the top end of the track. Fitted in 5.5 x 500ish. Dead. |
 | Running 1:00:00 [2]11 km (5:27 / km) | |
| |
| To track, bit of jogging around in between sessions and a run home with Mike and Al. The dizziness and blotches behind my eyes started a tram stop early tonight, I was very happy to get home. Sat in the bath and drank fudge brownie flavour choco milk to recover. |

| C • Feel the burn.... 2 |
Monday Dec 3 |
 | Circuits 40:00 [3] | |
| |
| Usual ShUOC session. I was struggling just about everything tonight. |
 | Running 1:00:00 [3]11 km (5:27 / km) | |
| |
| Run to circuits, warming up in the hall with a few spurts, then a very pleasant run out through crosspool with Neil and Little Rob. |
Sunday Dec 2 |
 | Running race 33:35 [5]10 km (3:22 / km) vdot: 63.7 | |
| |
| Percy Pud 10km just up the road from our house. Woke up to horrible cold and rainy weather this morning and it didn't ease off until after the race when the sun came out, just to rub it in. Started hard and went through 5km in 16.33 then suffered badly from about 7km to finish in 33.35, beating my pb from last year by 18 seconds. The last km is all up hill along a straight road - you can see the inflatable arch on the horizon for about 800m and it just doesn't get any closer. Pure agony. Medicinal beans on cheese on toast at the Bakers' afterwards sorted me out. |
| |
| C • Evil finish 6 |
 | Running 50:00 [2]8 km (6:15 / km) | |
| |
| Run to the start via Rob and Clare's, a load of jogging about before the start. My mental preparation was thrown into disarray by a delayed start. Really, waiting on the start line dressed in a skimpy vest and shorts in the pissing rain, you do not need an extra 10 mins of hanging about. Then a nice downhill run home afterwards. |
| |
| C • missed the comment... 1 |
Saturday Dec 1 |
 | Running 30:00 [2]6 km (5:00 / km) | |
| |
| Hungover run with Rob over to Eccy road. Blew away a few cobwebs. |
