The Ennerdale English Champs. 28th off a decent run. Paced it pretty well with a reasonably steady start although I was definitely going into the orange a few times up the first few climbs and on the fast runable stuff. Tucked in with a Helm Hill posse of Adam Osbourne and Sam Dixon and got the benefit of their knowledge along the Rd Pike ridge. Got a load of scree in my shoe and had to take it off at Haystacks, bit of a struggle getting it back on.
Hit Green Gable in almost exactly 2 hours and was sure I could make it back from there in comfortably less, which turned out to be optimistic. Worked through a few folk up to Kirk Fell and had a nice sociable section with BaBa and Pete Vale, then tried to push on up to Pillar, but I didn’t have much in the way of an extra gear. Caught Jonny on the descent, which will surely never happen again. We ran together for a bit over to Haycock and then I got onto Adam’s heels again for the long descent. He kept me honest, down to Crag Fell, where we caught another group. I ran most of the climb, but Adam ran it faster and had a big enough gap to hold me off on the descent. Running scared from the marauding pack behind and almost caught Ian Holmes(!), but capitulated on the slightly uphill track at the bottom.
Just inside the 4 hr mark, which I had set myself as a target, so I can’t be too disappointed. I finished strongly, so I think the only way to a better result would have been a bolder start, which could easily have backfired. Maybe carried a bit too much water too. Still, it was a great day out on a top route and nice to catch up with a few people.
