Lower Borrowdale Skyline English champs. A new race for everyone so not much idea what to expect. It turned out to be fast and grassy with a bit of micro route choice to keep things interesting.
I started as hard as I dared, but was still way back and feeling the pace on the first climb and bit of ridge. Rallied a bit on the second big climb, helped along by James Harris who was climbing really strongly. Hung into his coattails through the woods and over the next few climbs, gaining steadily on the group in front. I actually felt OK on this section, but the pace still felt fast.
Caught Josh and Aidan just before the big descent and we dug in together on the final steep climb, pleasantly surprised to see a few others coming back to us. Wasn't sure what was going to happen to my legs at the top, but luckily they still worked and I pushed on to try to drop the group. Picked off most of the next group too on the final climb and mustered a decent descent (by my standards) to hold them off.
Pretty happy with that really and couldn't have done more. 24th and just under 10 minutes down, but a couple of minutes down on the Calder vets, who are unstoppable. DP 4th team, with some good packing. Good day out in a nice, little visited part of the Lakes.
