Old County Tops with Will B. This is a race I have long wanted to run and I have had an entry scuppered a couple of times previously. It was a glorious day in the Lakes, so Will and I had a strategy of taking it steady and trying not to overheat. However Will has only one pace, which is fast, so that went out of the window on the run over to Helvellyn. I was a little concerned that he may have set too optimistic a pace, but from there on it was a case of taking it steadier on the ups and rough ground and then Will coming back to life and hammering the flats and descents. It sort of felt like a 7hr interval session.

The navigation was straightforward with perfect visibility, but there were still a few places where a map and compass came in handy. I was really impressed with the route, which takes in some really wild and remote ground in spite of the fact that it links up the three most popular hills in the Lakes. The only crowds we really saw were at the three summits.

We were in a good battle for the minor placings for pretty much the whole race (Doni and James long gone at the front), which kept it interesting and motivating. The out-n-back at the Old Man suggested that there were 5 teams from 2nd-6th within about 7 minutes with us lying 3rd. We did our best to push on from there although Will was cramping a bit on the run over to Three Shires Stone. But then he dropped a 5-minute mile down Wrynose which put us within touching distance of Mark and Jack in 2nd. They were still running strongly though and we had pretty much settled for 3rd until we spotted them sailing past on the road in the Langdale Valley having taken a longer route. A fast final km ensued, but we couldn't quite do enough to push it to a sprint finish.

Soup, tea and beer in the sun after, followed by an evening at the Old Dungeon Ghyll. What better way to spend a day?
