| Orienteering at Mt. Tom. More to get reacquainted with the woods than for exercise (about half jog, half walk). Temp in the 50's, but still 3-5" snow most places. Feet froze. |

| "Fun" run from Margi's in Conway. Did the usual (hilly!) Goshen loop counterclockwise, cutting off a bit before the lake on snowmobiled roads, and adding a small loop up to the tower. Not a good outing, between my sore hip, sore foot, a mild cold, and (after 90 minutes) dehydration. I let Peter and Maddy drift away and walked much of the Hemenway hill, and almost all of the final Conway Rd. hill. |

| UMass loop. Had energy to spare, but hip still painful in the front. Right after I stop, I can barely lift my left leg, though the weakness lasts only a few minutes. 6:58, 5:39, 12:44, 4:26, 7:19. |

| From Suzanne Heron's house. Very nice run with Peter and Jim, all but first and last mile on snowmobiled trails with excellent footing. Left hip flexors bothered me the whole way, but got through it by pushing off mostly with the right leg; allowed me to hang on to Peter's steady pace. Energy level good. Temp mid-teens, but calm in the woods. |

| From UMass. Steady hip pain after first five minutes. (Strange: If I stop to stretch for 60 seconds, I get another 3-5 minutes of pain-free running; then it quickly builds back to where it was.) Maybe it's a bad idea to keep running, but (1) it doesn't hurt much other than running, so the damage seems limited (2) I had this last winter and eventually got through it when I stopped running on the roads and (3) if I took off a week, or even a month, I'm confident it would still be there when I came back. On the positive side: energy/fitness has improved so that I can run this pace at level 3 rather than 4. 7:00, 5:39, 12:14, 7:18, 6:54, 8:24, 7:26. |

Sunday Feb 8 |
 | Trail Run 1:14:18 [2] 8.0 mi (9:16 / mi) | |
| |
| Checked out trails in the "Sawmill Hills" between Spring and Sylvester, including the one that heads back south to Ryan Rd. Snow was icy and firm: nice where snowmobiles had been, a bit tough on the ankles where feet had beaten a path. The easy pace did not stress my hip much; I took along a blown-up USGS map, but could hardly ever figure out where I was. |
Saturday Feb 7 |
 | Road Run 56:08 [3] 7.2 mi (7:48 / mi) | |
| |
| Nonotuck loop. 30's, but windy. Felt like my conditioning is a bit improved; but hip bothered me the whole way, mainly in the front where (I suppose) the hip flexors connect. May have to back off: it's not just the pain, but the weakness lifting the leg which makes sustained, hard running impossible. AHR: 144; MHR: 151. 23:43, 19:43, 12:42. |

| Treadmill, to avoid the wet, icy, slushy roads and cold rain. Did 8 minute mile pace start to finish. Seemed interminable. Hip ached the whole way. |
Wednesday Feb 4 |
 | Road Run (hills) 40:03 [3] 4.8 mi (8:20 / mi) | |
| |
| Included three Amity hills: 3:34, 3:35, 3:33. Uphill with short strides OK, but feel it in my left buttock. |
Tuesday Feb 3 |
 | Road Run 33:47 [2] 4.1 mi (8:14 / mi) | |

| UMass, in snow storm at sundown. Taking it easy: did some pretty major damage to my left hip/upper leg on Sunday. |
Monday Feb 2 |
 | Note | |
| |
| Went to podiatrist and had my foot problem diagnosed. (Though that's the least of my injuries at the moment.) I have "bunionettes" on both feet: bony growths on the outside of the foot at the base of the little toe (as opposed to "bunions", which are at the base of the big toe). Conservative treatment: orthotics and padding, and seeking out shoes that don't put too much pressure there. (Problem started years ago when I wore only ASICS shoes: the stripe on the uppers of their shoes makes it tight just where the problem is. Now it's too late: both feet have a substantial deformity that could only be corrected by pretty major surgery.) |

| From Jodi's in Conway, mostly with Peter and Maddy. Did the Bardwell-Stillwater loop; hilly, with one unplowed section that had excellent footing in tire tracks. My left hip muscles began hurting a lot by halfway, and, at the bottom after the bridge, I backed off to an easy jog and finished on my own. Discouraging. |
