Thursday Apr 29 | ||
| Road Run 51:17 [2] 6.0 mi (8:33 / mi) | ||
| From VW on King St., waiting for my car. To Smith, around the fields a few times, and back. Dead tired. | ||
Wednesday Apr 28 | ||
| Trail Run 1:17:22 [3] 9.0 mi (8:34 / mi) | ||
| ahr:143 max:158 | ||
| Mt Toby loop from Peter's to gate, to river, and back up to N. Mt. road. Steady effort, but felt sluggish throughout. Peter took it easy on me. | ||
Tuesday Apr 27 | ||
| Trail Run 52:51 [3] 5.75 mi (9:12 / mi) | ||
| From Amethyst, over Mt Orient, then a ways along the ridge, and then back. Very slow and tired going out, a bit better coming back. Nerve problem with middle tows of left foot really bothering me. | ||
Monday Apr 26 | ||
| machines 34:00 [2] | ||
| bike, 14; crosstrainer, 20. Didn't feel like running in the rain. (In fact, didn't feel like running.) | ||
Sunday Apr 25 | ||
| Orienteering 2:37:20 [4] 12.9 km (12:12 / km) +505m 10:12 / km | ||
| Billy Goat at Mt. Tom! One very bad leg turned what would have been a very good day into just an OK day. Somehow I wandered way right on the way to 14 and took a long time to relocate correctly. Lost about 12 minutes. Reduced to a slow jog from 15 on, but able to keep moving without cramping. Skipped 5: good choice for me since I would have walked all the way up to 6. (In retrospect, skipping 14 would have been better!) Perfect O-weather, around 50. | ||

Saturday Apr 24 | ||
| Orienteering 1:05:56 [3] 3.8 km (17:21 / km) | ||
| Short Red course at Mt Tom. One of those days I couldn't do anything right - even orienting the map! One mistake after another, probably 25 minutes lost. Horrendous. | ||
| Orienteering 21:57 [4] 2.7 km (8:08 / km) | ||
| This was fun! I was tired from the earlier fiasco, but I needed a confidence booster so I signed up last minute. It's not often I can do a course in close to 8 min/k! So what if it was a yellow course. | ||

A Loop, then B loop - Splits | ||
Friday Apr 23 | ||
| Trail/Road Run 34:41 [2] 4.2 mi (8:15 / mi) | ||
| Jog, trying to loosen up my hamstrings. | ||
Wednesday Apr 21 | ||
| Trail Run 1:10:19 [4] 8.5 mi (8:15 / mi) | ||
| ahr:144 max:160 | ||
| Frost to Depot and back with Jim Plaza. Moderate pace going out, (3 effort), pushed some coming back (4). Pleasantly surprised to have good energy and some spring in the legs in spite of training five and a half hours in the last four days. Encouraging. 17:51, 7:14, 11:22 (36:28), 11:06, 6:33, 9:05, 7:06 (33:51). | ||
Tuesday Apr 20 | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:59 [4] 5.6 km (10:53 / km) | ||
| Mt Tom course from 2001. Did it then in 65, which included about 5 minutes looking for a misplaced control; it was one of my best races up to then, with only a couple 20-30 second mistakes, and one bad route choice costing a minute. Today I made a 2 minute mistake, and was slower on trails and uphills - didn't feel the urgency of a race - but a bit faster on most of the off trail legs. Of course, it helps when you know where most of them are; and no doubt not punching 18 times saves a couple minutes. | ||
| Road Run 5:00 [2] 0.5 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| Jog to and from. Had to park outside the gate. | ||
Monday Apr 19 | ||
| Orienteering 1:22:41 [3] 6.3 km (13:07 / km) | ||
| Mt. Tom course from '99. Back then I had just started orienteering and did it in 1:58 running hard all over the map. Today (feeling tired from yesterday) I walked a ton, never went faster than a slow jog, and did it 36 minutes faster even though I lost a couple minutes on trail errors, and 3-4 minutes caught up in thick laurel - an area I'll know not to go on Sunday! That's not to say I'm any good at this sport; just better. | ||
Sunday Apr 18 | ||
| Orienteering 1:16:32 [4] 5.96 km (12:50 / km) | ||
| Brookvale Park Red course; warm and sunny. A "low energy" day, which I really paid for rudging through the green. Lost about six minutes on 4 when I guessed I was N. of the boulder and in fact was way south; lost about 3 minutes more on the rest. | ||
| Orienteering 51:29 [3] 3.7 km (13:55 / km) | ||
| Did Orange. Started out trying to keep a decent pace, going back and forth with Clint for the first five controls. Then I started to bonk and walked the rest when off trail. When I get tired, I get extra stupid: lost about four minutes going to 8 by taking the wrong trail (north of stream bed) and not using map or compass to check until way too late. | ||
Red - Splits | ||
Saturday Apr 17 | ||
| Trail/Road Run 34:42 [3] 4.3 mi (8:04 / mi) | ||
| Meadows to Arcadia trails, first part with Nora. | ||
Friday Apr 16 | ||
| Track 8:40 [5] 1.5 mi (5:46 / mi) | ||
| 6 x 400 x 400, with Peter at Smith outdoor track. 84.3, 86.6, 86.2, 88.6, 88.4, 85.9. Last lap: AHR, 156, MHR, 161. | ||
| Trail/Road Run 48:00 [2] 5.5 mi (8:43 / mi) | ||
| The rest, including a cooldown on the trails. | ||
Wednesday Apr 14 | ||
| Trail Run 1:12:17 [3] 8.5 mi (8:30 / mi) | ||
| To Depot Road on the Frost, out and back. Moderate but steady pace; encouraging that my energy never flagged. Trail flooded in many places between the power line and the fields. 8:17, 10:10, 7:05, 11:37 (37:11), 11:15, 6:54, 9:29, 7:26 (35:06) | ||
Tuesday Apr 13 | ||
| Road Run 36:58 [3] 5.2 mi (7:06 / mi) | ||
| Loop from Smith after lifting. In cold, soaking rain with partially flooded streets. Good effort considering. | ||
Monday Apr 12 | ||
| Road Run 26:00 [3] 3.3 mi (7:53 / mi) | ||
| Did three loops around UMass athletic field. Grass felt good, though a bit tired from yesterday. | ||
Sunday Apr 11 | ||
| Orienteering 2:44:11 [3] 10 km (16:25 / km) | ||
| Blue course at Boojum Rock (two loops, 28 controls). Trails were removed from the map. Very poor orienteering. And very slow through the thick stuff which seemed to be everywhere: got tripped by green thorny vines numerous times. (Legs are sliced and diced.) I too often headed out without a good attack point (or attack strategy) and when I got in the area, I had trouble reading the map or terrain. Usually I ignored the many trails; a couple times I tried them and wandered way off course. Had to relocate on something big a few times. At least, for training, I had to stay on my feet for a long time. I don't expect to return to this site of my own free will. Right hamstring sore, but no cramping. | ||
Saturday Apr 10 | ||
| Trail/Road Run 25:47 [2] 3.2 mi (8:02 / mi) | ||
| Jog after lifting at Smith. Sore hamstrings. | ||
Friday Apr 9 | ||
| Trail/Road Run 49:52 [3] 6.4 mi (7:46 / mi) | ||
| Puffers loop. A struggle. Not feeling well. Maybe sleep deprivation is catching up with me. 7:32, 7:41, 18:38, 8:26, 7:33. | ||
Wednesday Apr 7 | ||
| Orienteering 1:25:27 [3] 5.4 km (15:49 / km) | ||
| First two-thirds of a red course from last spring at Northfield. Felt physically feeble; made some poor route choices; and didn't enjoy the constant "in your face" vegetation. (What a contrast from last weekend!) | ||
Tuesday Apr 6 | ||
| Road Run 34:43 [4] 4.9 mi (7:04 / mi) | ||
| U Mass loop, ran pretty hard. 6:21, 5:16, 11:49, 4:15, 7:00. | ||
Sunday Apr 4 | ||
| Orienteering 1:21:45 [4] 7.46 km (10:58 / km) +285m 9:12 / km | ||
| Day 2 Red at Ansonia Center. 40's and on and off drizzle. Less energy than yesterday, and a few more mistakes (about 6 minutes total); but happy overall to be showing some clear improvement (especially, by avoiding any mistakes over about 2 minutes). Now if only I can stay healthy and get fit. | ||
Red Day 2 - Splits | ||
Saturday Apr 3 | ||
| Orienteering 41:26 [4] 3.75 km (11:03 / km) +140m 9:19 / km | ||
| Osbornedale Day 1 Red (short course). Felt good physically. Made one two-minute mistake: didn't read the map on the way to the first control, then "corrected" 180 degrees in the wrong direction. I feel I can move faster; but probably not without making more mistakes. | ||
| Trail Run 15:00 [2] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| Jog before and after. | ||
Red Day 1 - Splits | ||
Thursday Apr 1 | ||
| machines 12:00 [2] | ||
| bike warm-up. | ||
| Road Run 32:21 [3] 4.1 mi (7:53 / mi) | ||
| UMass loop in the rain. Low energy. | ||
