| Loop from Mill R. No improvement. I pride myself in making rational decisions, and it's pretty obvious that the rational thing to do is to skip West Point, and stop any kind of running. The hip problems are quite a bit worse than in Cincinnati, and they were pretty bad then. At this point, the goal should be just to be healthy and in shape by next fall. Even that feels like a pipe dream right now. |

| Did the first 7 controls of the '89 Billygoat at Norwottuck on a perfect day. No big mistakes. Trying to do an easy jog with a short, choppy stride. I transferred the course to the new map, which made the course different now then it was then: 1 is now a trail run, as is a chunk of 6 to 7. The reentrant where 2 was (as Jeff Saeger noted) is not on the new map (nor is a line of cliffs between 2 and 3). A stone wall south of 4 that comes off the main wall along the road is not on the new map (morphed into a cliff?), and the marsh south of 4 is now a pond. 5 to 6 I went right of line along the stone walls and then up the spur: a good, safe route. |

| Westhampton-Haydenville loop. 22.4 miles, 16.8 mph. Moderate effort, some serious headwinds. (Coming down N. Farms, where I'd normally be going 30 mph I could only muster 24.) 24:07, 40:21. (And, yes, my left hip was pretty sore by the end.) |

| Haydenville loop, 18.6 miles, 17.0 mph. Hip sore during and after. But at least I can do it at my "usual" pace. 11:16, 19:17, 27:32, 38:15, 47:37. |
Monday Apr 18 |
 | cycling 49:44 [3] | |

| Reservoir loop, a bit faster than Sat. Computer says 14.4 m., 17.4 mph. (27:38) Left leg is weaker than the right, but I think I may be able to do some decent training on the bike. Running (other than a jog) is out of the question. Finally made an appointment to see an orthopedist (in three weeks); he's also a sports medicine doctor. But I have little confidence that he can even diagnose this, let alone help fix it. |

 | Orienteering 2:03:16 [3] 6.6 km (18:41 / km) | |
| |
| Macedonia Brook, a "short" blue. Ugly orienteering. I expected to be slow, but not to make 30-35 minutes of mistakes. The really bad legs were 4 and 7 (but I even screwed up 1). Couldn't read the map very well without my magnifier, which I smashed at the Billygoat; the bifocals kept getting wet and fogged, and only help standing still. Comments with my splits. |

| Cold is in full bloom, so went even slower than yesterday. Picked up the last two Billygoat controls I agreed to get, 7 and 8, and cleaned out the water stop (discovering the downside of gu). Confirmed that there was no good reason to have missed 7: got distracted by seeing people north of the control instead of reading the map. (Took a somewhat zig-zag route back from 8 to 7. Moral: don't hold the compass and the punch in the same hand!) |

| Picked up northside controls from the Billygoat. With a cold and sore hip, I was moving real slow. Still fun to spike those controls! |

| Event: Billygoat Run |
 | Orienteering race 3:06:56 [4] 13.29 km (14:04 / km) | |

| Billygoat at Norwottuck. Nice day, though a bit too warm for me (70 by the end). A challenging course, both physically and navigationally. Strange: I never felt like I was having a good run; I made lots of mistakes early, messing up 3, 5, 7, and 9 (losing maybe 12 minutes, but clean after that); and physically it was a struggle the whole way, including wrenching my bad hip going to 7 (which hobbled me for quite a while), and cramping going to 19, which slowed my finish. And yet, I finished ahead, often well ahead, of just about everyone I try to be competitive with. I placed 31th; my previous highest Billygoat placing was 37th at Gay City in 2001 (when I was a lot faster). No doubt, general familiarity with the map and terrain helped, though it's hard to pinpoint exactly where. |

| Mix of trails at Mt Tom, starting at Lake Bray and looping over Goat Peak. Felt physically feeble and cut the run short. |
Wednesday Apr 6 |
 | grass 34:31 [3] 4.4 mi (7:49 / mi) | |
| |
| 4 loops around UMass field, with a water and stretching break in the middle. Painful butt, labored breathing: it's hard to imagine getting through the Billygoat without croaking. 8:51, 8:25, break, 8:35. 8:39. |
Tuesday Apr 5 |
 | Orienteering 1:13:32 [3] 5.4 km (13:37 / km) | |
| |
| Did a loop around the northside at Norwottuck, putting out a modest effort except for the climbs. I made a couple of two minute errors, and probably spent five minutes tryting to verify some puzzling feaures on the map. Almost no snow, and the woods were open and fast. This is a great time of year to do an event here. |

| Ran in M50, green. A much better run today, but still one mistake away from being a good run. (A three minute parallel error, following the wrong stream after an unforgivable period of hazy map contact.) The mistake was the difference between fifth and third in M50. (Glen in second was out of reach given my current running speed and hip injury; Stanislav in first is, of course, in another league from the rest of us.) I suspect hesitations, mid-route corrections, and minor route choice mistakes added up to another one to two minutes of lost time: but that's just the difference, to be expected, between a really good orienteer and where I am now. |

| Jog to the start. |
 | Orienteering race 49:42 [3] 3.7 km (13:26 / km) | |
| |
| Short course, green. Rain, and very muddy going in and out of the gullies. Without glasses or a magnifier, I couldn't read the map well, which contributed to some very shaky orienteering. (Guessing where I was, instead of stopping to make sure.) A four minute mistake, about seven minutes total. |

| Event: Flying Pig IX (US Team Trials) |
 | Orienteering race (sprint) 24:00 [4] 2.6 km (9:14 / km) | |
| |
| Pig sprint at Camp Friedlander. Fun event. But I'm not very good at mapreading on the fly: I mispunched on the island (never looked at the map to see where the control was placed), and I made about 75 seconds of other mistakes spread out over four controls. |
 | Road Run 7:30 [2] 0.75 mi (10:00 / mi) | |
| |
| Warm-up before the sprint, trying to loosen up my hip after a lot of sitting on the plane and in the car. |
