Sunday Aug 31 | ||
| Orienteering 1:29:32 [4]7.2 km (12:26 / km) | ||
| Red course at Pawtuckaway. Pretty clean. Some 30 second errors, and probably lost 4-5 minutes due to poor execution on the longest leg (including crawling through lots of green to get to the Beaver dam; and taking 2-3 minutes to cross a swamp which was up to the top of my thighs). | ||
Red - Splits | ||
Saturday Aug 30 | ||
| Orienteering 16:10 [4]1.6 km (10:06 / km) | ||
| CSU event at Pawtuckaway. This was a mass start to provide seedings for the match races. Lost about 30 seconds on last control, otherwise pretty clean (though I mostly followed on first three of six). Seeded sixth. | ||
| Orienteering 26:00 [3]1.3 km (20:00 / km) | ||
| Match race against Barb Bryant. I lost. I hit the first three controls clean with Barb trying to keep up, then ... lost in the woods for 10-12 minutes. Of course, since Barb had followed me off-track, a winning strategy would have been to stay with her until we found number 4 together. But that wouldn't have been very nice. | ||
Thursday Aug 28 | ||
| Orienteering 1:30:00 [2]5 km (18:00 / km) | ||
| Flagging more control locations after work, then running back fast to beat the dark. Unmapped biking trails sprouting like weeds. | ||
Wednesday Aug 27 | ||
| Trail/Road Run 45:00 [3]5.75 mi (7:49 / mi) | ||
| Outer loop of XC course from home: third (uphill) mile in 7:56. Legs felt better, but temp in mid-80's. | ||
Tuesday Aug 26 | ||
| Trail/Road Run 46:00 [3]5.5 mi (8:22 / mi) | ||
| 5 loops around Smith athletic fields, plus to and from house. Progressively faster, but fastest only 5:19. Legs still tired from Toby: don't recover like I used to. | ||
Monday Aug 25 | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:00 [1]3 km (20:00 / km) | ||
| Flagging control locations for score-o. A lot of standing around trying to get map to match terrain. | ||
Sunday Aug 24 | ||
| Trail Run 2:00:03 [4]14.0 mi (8:34 / mi) | ||
| Mt Toby trail race. The good weather (70 deg., low humidity) helped me hit my goal time (two hours) without any of the suffering I associate with this race. But rather slow over last four miles. Splits: 16:29, 19:01, 27:07 (1:02:38), 20:26, 21:59, 14:59 (57:25). | ||
Saturday Aug 23 | ||
| cycling 48:06 [3] | ||
| Leeds loop, 14.1 m, 17.6 mph. (26:49) | ||
Thursday Aug 21 | ||
| Trail/Road Run 53:32 [3]7.0 mi (7:38 / mi) | ||
| Mill River loop out, but got dark and took road back. Steady effort in warm, muggy conditions.
6:53, 18:01, 12:25, 11:02, 5:11.
Wednesday Aug 20 | ||
| cycling 1:20:00 [3] | ||
| With PG. I croaked on a steep hill heading up to Chesterfield, couldn't get my foot free and toppled over banging my knee. Otherwise, some good stretches of hard riding. Never made it to Chesterfield: took Kennedy loop to Williamsburg instead. 23 miles, 90 degrees. | ||
Tuesday Aug 19 | ||
| Trail Run 49:52 [3]6.0 mi (8:18 / mi) | ||
| Juggler. Low 80's. Legs felt surprisingly good.
8:47, 9:37, 7:20 (25:45), 6:50, 9:33, 7:43 (24:07).
Monday Aug 18 | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:00 [1] | ||
| Mapping a trail and checking out some areas on Norwottuck map - after a red eye from CA! | ||
Sunday Aug 17 | ||
| road 29:00 [2]3.25 mi (8:55 / mi) | ||
| Around Rancho Park. | ||
Saturday Aug 16 | ||
| Note | ||
| In L.A. Creamed Richard at tennis, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. | ||
Friday Aug 15 | ||
| Orienteering 1:43:53 [4]7.2 km (14:26 / km) | ||
| A-meet red course at Baldwin Hills. Badly missed number 4 and floundered for 4-5 minutes, apparently north and west of the deparession. (Didn't help that I was looking for a reentrant.) Then, bailed to the stone wall and came back right to it, but not until another 5 minutes were lost. Probably bailed too soon: I should have been able to relocate if thinking clearly. Otherwise, a very clean run, with only one significant miss on number 3. Had to take it easy in the heat. | ||
Red - Splits | ||
Wednesday Aug 13 | ||
| Orienteering 1:10:00 [3]4 km (17:30 / km) | ||
| Shadowing exercise with Tom Carr, alternating legs. (Twice he went way off course - once, off the map - but he doesn't seem to make many mistakes in the meets.) | ||
Tuesday Aug 12 | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]3.6 km (16:40 / km) | ||
| Short course at Sergeant Center, mostly with legs emphasizing precision compass. Not my strong suit. Hot and Humid and thick. | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] | ||
| Canoe-O with Nora at Sergeant Center. Made her go for two land controls: she was one out of two. | ||
| Orienteering 45:00 [1] | ||
| Vampire-O with Nora, Adam, and his friend Toby. They bravely followed me off trail a couple times into the dark woods. Got vamped as we were coming in to the finish. | ||
Monday Aug 11 | ||
| Orienteering 5.25 km ( / km) | ||
| A green course at Fox Forest as part of Wilderness-O camp. Two five minute errors. Hot and humid. | ||
Sunday Aug 10 | ||
| Orienteering 1:32:00 [3]5.9 km (15:36 / km) | ||
| Day 2. A-meet. Dismal orienteering. Lost 15 minutes on one control from a series of mistakes on trails beginning with a 180. Dehydrated, overtired, and unable to concntrate. | ||
Saturday Aug 9 | ||
| Orienteering 2:16:48 [3]6.6 km (20:44 / km) | ||
| Bolder Dash A-meet at Burnt Mt. Excriciatingly slow per k time due to: warm and muggy weather; challenging terrain with constant ups and downs; and poor orienteering which lead to total lack of confidence. Major mistakes on five controls totaling about 30 minutes. When I got offline (as I always do), I often had trouble matching map to terrain in order to correct. | ||
Friday Aug 8 | ||
| cycling 53:42 [2] | ||
| Easy spin. | ||
Thursday Aug 7 | ||
| Orienteering 52:00 [1]3 km (17:20 / km) | ||
| Tooling around Norwottuck from Bachelor St. entrance. Too buggy to be pleasant, and got stung again, this time on front of left thigh. | ||
Wednesday Aug 6 | ||
| Track 20:16 [4]3.0 mi (6:45 / mi) | ||
| Did 3200 in 13:36 (6:46, 6:50), then a two-three minute water break, then 1600 in 6:40. Warm and muggy. Mile AHR's: 149, 156, 152. MHR: 158. | ||
| Road Run 30:00 [2]3.5 mi (8:34 / mi) | ||
| Before and after. | ||
Tuesday Aug 5 | ||
| Road Run 33:54 [3]4.2 mi (8:04 / mi) | ||
| Around outside of Smith athletic fields, in a downpour. Last half with Bob Austin: I had bagged a planned track workout, he had bagged the 5k race. | ||
Monday Aug 4 | ||
| Road Run 38:44 [3]4.9 mi (7:54 / mi) | ||
| UMass loop. Light rain and very humid. | ||
Sunday Aug 3 | ||
| cycling 2:17:26 [3] | ||
| Conway-Ashfield-Goshen with Peter and Walter (from Walter's house). Exceedingly muggy, but best I've felt on the climbs. Pushed the uphills to stay with Peter; pushed the downhills to stay with Walter. Averages somewhat low due to some waiting at tops of hills on the clock. AHR: 120; MHR: 150. | ||
Saturday Aug 2 | ||
| Trail Run 12:00 [3]1.5 mi (7:59 / mi) | ||
| Planned on doing loop at Mt Tom but quickly gathered a swarm of deer flies around my head. After getting bit a couple times and killing about ten, I bailed. | ||
| Trail Run 24:40 [4]3.1 mi (7:57 / mi) | ||
| Second try. Did 5k XC course. Warm, humid, and not much shade at 2 PM, so didn't push too hard. AHR 144, MHR 156. 8:07, 7:40, 8:02, 50. | ||
| Trail Run 10:00 [2]1.0 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| "cool" down. | ||
Friday Aug 1 | ||
| Road Run 49:23 [2]5.5 mi (8:59 / mi) | ||
| Just getting in some mileage. Outer loop of XC course from home. AHR: 128. Stung twice on my calf by a giant mutant wasp that looked like it was out of a sci fi movie. Quite swollen. | ||
