| Possum Trot at Weston Bend St. Park in MO. A memorable event (my first o-meet off the East coast), but not a very good result. Terrain was deep, steep reentrants, lots of underbrush often with thorns, and lots of unmapped barbed wire, some of which I got to know intimately. (I will never complain about the woods in the Northeast again.) I wasn't up to it physically, and started to bonk after about 2 hours (unlike the other 3 "goats" this year). I ran alone from the second control, and so didn't get the physical boost, or navigational help, I get from running in a pack. I made one incredibly stupid mapreading error that cost about 7 minutes, and a bunch of 1-2 minute mistakes. And, just when I thought I had undergone every o-mishap possible: I came into the fourth control through thick green, punched, and then noticed I didn't have a map. (Couldn't feel it through the thick gloves I was wearing.) Spent 2-3 minutes hunting for it in the green, about 40 meters back. The skips I chose - 12 and 22 - were good, saving about 1.5 k, but Charlie's (11-12) were even better, probably the best. Charlie clobbered me by 19 minutes, but I still took the Grand Slam by 59 seconds! |
