Monday May 31

cycling 2:20:00 [2]
32 mile tour, relaxed pace. To Look Park with family, then on my own up North Farms to Haydenville, then through Whately, then Christian lane through S. Deerfield to River road, then side trip to top of Sugarloaf (baled about 150 m. before the top and walked up for the view; rode my brakes all the way down),then Sunderland Bridge, and rt. 47 back to Hadley, bike path over river and home. Very pleasant, except some neck strain towards end, and sore seat.

Sunday May 30

Orienteering 1:35:11 [2] 7 km (13:36 / km)
ahr:126 max:148
Did second half of Mt Tom Billygoat (finish area to 11, then back after 19 skipping the out and back to 20.) Very leisurely. Took the low route to 11, which was navigationally easier and faster (but lost a minute because I forgot there would be golfers, and had to backtrack to go around the boundary). Took a nice route to 14 left of line, attacking from the stream to the south - but misread the map and lost a minute or two when I got near the circle. No problem frinding logs south of the line to cross the stream going to 18. Nice day in the woods.

Saturday May 29

Track 19:15 [4] 3.0 mi (6:24 / mi)
3x1600x400. Smith track - another attempt to get some speed and strength in the legs. Not all out, but hard enough after a long layoff: ticking off 48 seconds per 200 like clockwork. Some left knee pain to add to the injury mix. 6:24 (146, 153); 6:26 (152, 157), 6:25 (153, 156).
Trail/Road Run 25:00 [2] 3.0 mi (8:20 / mi)
Before, after, between.
Note
Hiked seven sisters from Notch to Hitchcock and back, with Adam and Dylan.

Friday May 28

Trail/Road Run 28:58 [3] 3.5 mi (8:17 / mi)
Jogging at Smith, but with two quicker laps around field: 4:59 (151), 4:54 (155). All I had time for before coaching track.

Wednesday May 26

Trail/Road Run 42:06 [2] 4.75 mi (8:51 / mi)
Inner loop from home. Tired and still unwell.

Tuesday May 25

Trail Run 1:13:44 [3] 8.5 mi (8:39 / mi)
ahr:143 max:158
With Peter, the Frost loop. Legs felt good, conditioning sucks. Did this loop a year ago a minute faster: comment in the log was "decent effort, but pretty slow time." So it goes.

Monday May 24

Trail/Road Run 45:30 [2] 5.5 mi (8:15 / mi)
Outer XC loop, from home, partly in thunderstorm. Tired.

Sunday May 23

Orienteering 1:25:24 [3] 6.1 km (14:00 / km) +170m 12:17 / km

WCOC meet at Pond Mt., Red. A strange and frustrating day. Frustrating: in five years of orienteering, I can only remember two times that doing a 180 leaving a control cost me substantial amounts of time - once at Wolf Den and once last summer at the second day A-meet near Hanover. What were the odds of doing it twice in one meet? (Cost me at least 6 minutes leaving 7 because, though I was wondering why the cliffs were in the wrong place, I kept going anyway; cost about four minutes leaving 9.) Strange: on the way to 11, big drops of blood started falling on my map which I eventually determined were coming out of my nose. Also lost about 3-4 minutes on 5 and 2 minutes on the other end of 8. And very low energy from the heat (80 deg) and the remnants of my cold.

Red - Splits

Saturday May 22

Trail/Road Run 36:30 [3] 4.75 mi (7:40 / mi)
Six laps around Smith fields, last in 5:06. Flat surface doesn't bother nerve problem in my left foot.

Thursday May 20

cycling 1:05:52 [3]
ahr:121 max:140
Haydenville loop, 17.2 mph. Felt like a "3", though you wouldn't know it from the AHR. 27:17, 47:09.

Wednesday May 19

Orienteering 1:27:36 [2] 6.0 mi (14:35 / mi)
Some Billygoat controls and some easy trailrunning. Thicker and buggier than last month -- just as rocky.

Tuesday May 18

Trail Run 48:06 [3] 6.0 mi (8:01 / mi)
ahr:142 max:153
Juggler. Felt a bit ragged, but a steady effort. Cold getting better (slowly). 24:36, 23:30.

Monday May 17

Trail Run 42:46 [2] 4.5 mi (9:29 / mi)
Loop around Mt. Norwottuck from visitor center, for a change in scenery. M&M, South Side, Swamp, Frost. Felt very sluggish, but mosquitos didn't let me walk the hills.

Sunday May 16

Trail/Road Run 54:41 [3] 7.0 mi (7:48 / mi)
Mill R. loop from house. Legs OK, but cold now accompanied by a cough.

Saturday May 15

cycling 1:08:11 [2]
ahr:116 max:143
Haydenville loop, 19 miles. Temp over 90. First ride of the season, went pretty easy, acclimating my butt. 28:34, 39:12.

Friday May 14

Trail/Road Run 40:36 [2] 4.75 mi (8:33 / mi)
Inner loop of XC course from home. Easy, wanted to do something in spite of this lousy cold. Glad I'm not going to Harriman tomorrow.

Thursday May 13

Trail/Road Run 27:45 [3] 3.5 mi (7:56 / mi)
Five loops around Smith fields on outer dirt track. Started very slow (9 min. pace) and gradually worked down to about 7:20 pace. Legs a bit sore; head stuffed from cold.

Wednesday May 12

machines 30:00 [3]
Cross trainer. Legs pretty much recovered, but the cold that I had been fighting all week finally hit with a vengeance. At least it held off until after the rogaine and the funeral in LA. (Case of mind over body? Like the person who postpones dying until after some big event.)

Saturday May 8

Orienteering 22:39:49 [2] 67.6 km (20:07 / km)
World Rogaining Champs at Big Lake, AZ with J-J. Beautiful terrain, my first time orienteering in the Rockies. 32 controls, 2130 points. By J-J's calculation, we covered 85.9 k (53.6 miles). Altitude not much of a factor given how little we ran. Pace was steady and the orienteering sharp for the first half. I found the night orienteering a bit harder, but J-J was solid. We stayed out all night, and then abruptly changed our plan to visit the Hash House fearing we would never leave again. I felt OK walking through the night (and warm enough, barely), but by around daybreak my sore, undernourished leg muscles could barely keep up a slow walk. (I don't think I ate enough: only two and a half power bars, some beef jerkey and lots of gatorade.) We came back with an hour and twenty minutes to go. 47th place overall. Turns out only 70 more points would have lifted us ten places, and we had plenty of time to do that ... but easier said now then done then. Overall, a fine experience, and a great partner for my first rogaine. I would only do another if I trained for it: a number of vigorous all-day hikes with a pack, on and off trail.

Thursday May 6

Road Run 25:28 [3] 3.3 mi (7:43 / mi)
3 loops around UMass field.

Tuesday May 4

Trail Run 54:22 [3] 6.5 mi (8:22 / mi)
From Mill R. to Atkins and back on Frost. Trying new trail shoes for the rogaine. Legs felt good but too narrow forefoot aggravated my left foot neuroma. Damn. 28:42, 25:40.

Monday May 3

machines 30:00 [2]
Cross trainer after lifting.

Sunday May 2

Orienteering 54:13 [4] 5.8 km (9:21 / km)
Score-o at Brainard. Drizzley. Ran very cleanly, only losing time on a couple of hesitations (and being very slow on the slippery rocky ground). A navigationally easy course and lots of trail legs made for a fast time.
Orienteering 1:08:00 [2] 5 km (13:36 / km)
Picked up the northern controls west of the reservoir. Went splat on a rocky trail and bruised my thigh, but not too bad.

Saturday May 1

Orienteering 55:12 [2] 3.7 km (14:55 / km)
Did the short course from last week, very slow (temp in 80's). Thought I was going slow enough to make no mistakes -- well, no big mistakes.
Trail Run 15:00 [2] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
Jog on trails to start triangle.
