Wednesday Mar 30

Trail run/Woods run 1:04:48 [3] 5.0 mi (12:57 / mi)
ahr:142 max:156
With Peter in Montague (Willis Hill). Mostly off-trail, and mostly good running on bare ground. 60 degrees, first real spring day. Unfortunately, my hip was getting progressively sorer during the run, and it was pointless to even try to stay with Peter, who generously waited for me to catch up every ten minutes or so.

Tuesday Mar 29

Road Run (hills) 31:04 [3] 3.8 mi (8:10 / mi)
ahr:144 max:161
UMass loop with two Amity hills (intensity 5) and a faster last mile (intensity 4). 3:38, 3:40. Hip sore, conditioning sucks. So it goes.

Monday Mar 28

machines 40:00 [3]
Bike 20, stepper 20.

Sunday Mar 27

Orienteering (Blue) 2:59:52 [3]*** 9.5 km (18:56 / km)
Boojum Rock, blue course. Going on the crackpot theory that the more you stress an injury, the faster it heals. (The data's not in yet.) Anyway, the goal was to do a long effort (at relaxed pace) in preparation for the Billygoat, and to navigate well. I was one for two. The map had no trails on it (like last year), and (again like last year) I had a lot of trouble keeping contact, and even more trouble relocating. Probably lost 30-35 minutes total. Between the relentless thick (and sharp) vegetation and the often technical terrain, this is about the toughest map I've orienteered on (without the trails!). Also tried orienteering in blended bifocals for the first time. Not sure that it helps much except standing still staring at one feature: only a narrow horizontal strip at the bottom of my field of vision is clear when I look at the map. (A vertical strip of clarity would be more useful!).

Saturday Mar 26

Orienteering race (sprint) 22:37 [4] 2.54 km (8:54 / km)
spiked:5/11c
WCOC sprint A, at Hoyt. First meet since the fall, first time on this map. Ground has mostly 1-2 inches of snow. I wasn't real accurate or smooth: probably six 10-20 second mistakes. Hip sore, but don't think I did any more damage.
Orienteering race (sprint) 29:26 [4] 3.2 km (9:12 / km)
spiked:11/14c
Sprint B, a bit longer and more demanding. I was more accurate overall, but I made two 30 second mistakes - on 2 and 9 - both involving some vegetation I never should have visited.

Course "A" - Splits

Course "B" - Splits

Friday Mar 25

Trail Run 49:41 [2] 5.5 mi (9:02 / mi)
Outer loop from home. Easy pace. A couple inches of soft snow, good traction.

Thursday Mar 24

machines (crosstrainer) 40:00 [3]
ahr:127 max:145

Wednesday Mar 23

Road Run (hills) 39:40 [3] 4.7 mi (8:26 / mi)
Included three hill repeats: 3:48, 3:44, 3:44. Pretty slow, but it got my heartrate and breathing up for a change.

Tuesday Mar 22

Orienteering 1:32:14 [3] 5.3 km (17:24 / km)
spiked:8/13c
Mt. Norwottuck, low 50's and plenty of deep, soft snow. (Some bare ground facing south, but some low-lying areas where I went in past my knees.) More trudging than running. Made a couple of parallel errors where there were series of reentrant-spurs, one that baffled me for five minutes. Also a couple of lesser misses due to careless compass.

Monday Mar 21

Road Run 34:00 [3] 4.1 mi (8:17 / mi)
UMass, actually mostly on grass between sidewalk and street. Time is a guess: forgot my watch at home. Tired from my "vacation", and hip hurts the same.

Saturday Mar 19

sand 34:00 [2] 3.0 mi (11:20 / mi)
Slower today, suffering from a mild case of "tourista" (the one time we ate away from the resort ...) First 15 minutes with Nora.
swim 20:00 [1]
In the Grand Cenote, dodging bats.

Friday Mar 18

Hike 10:00 [2]
Up and down the great Pyramid in Coba. A lot faster going up then coming down!

Thursday Mar 17

sand 32:00 [3] 3.2 mi (10:00 / mi)
A bit faster: hip feels better doing this before tennis. Thought of running all the way to the beach below the ruins at Tulum, but that would have taken another mile or so. Brutally hot sun, but a cooling breeze.

Wednesday Mar 16

swim 15:00 [3]
6 laps in a 50 meter pool.
sand 25:00 [3] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
Headed north, but the beach was narrower and more sloped than to the south, and bothered my hip more. Amused myself by trying to just avoid getting my shoes wet by the incoming waves, since the waters edge is where the sand is firmest.
cycling 40:00 [1]
Easy pace to the ruins and back, about 6 miles total. Very hot, though it didn't bother me at this pace (and without a helmet!)

Tuesday Mar 15

swim 1:30:00 [2]
Three separate swims as part of the "Mayan Adventure" tour, with snorkelling. An open cenote (large limestone sinkhole with crystal clear water, lots of colorful fish), an underground cenote (Hidden Worlds, with some caving not for the claustrophobic), and a swim down a river to a bay (in Akumal) where we chased sea turtles around in circles.

Monday Mar 14

sand 25:00 [2] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
In Mexico on the "Riviera Maya" just north of Tulum. Slow run along the beach, heading south towards the ruins. Beaches almost deserted.
grass 6:00 [3] 0.75 mi (7:59 / mi)
Tried doing some faster running around a soccer field, but didn't feel very good so I bagged it.

Sunday Mar 13

Road Run 19:21 [3] 2.4 mi (8:04 / mi)
(injured)
Green St. loop. Haven't made a lot of progress, which is worrying. I had similar hip (sciatica? hamstring?) problems the last two winters, but I was pretty much better by mid-March. Well, I'll have a week in Mexico to rest up (and get fat!)

Friday Mar 11

machines (crosstrainer) 40:00 [3]
(injured)
At least I'm getting my heartrate up higher on this than I used to (140's for second half), making it a legitimate "3".

Thursday Mar 10

Orienteering 1:10:42 [2]*** 4.1 km (17:15 / km)
spiked:5/8c (injured)
South side of Nowottuck, a mix of walking and slow jogging, some of it in deep snow. Nice in the woods (except for cold feet). But orienteering wasn't very sharp.

Wednesday Mar 9

swim 17:20 [3]
(injured)
First lap swim in two years. 800 yds.
machines (stepper) 24:00 [3]
(injured)

Tuesday Mar 8

machines (crosstrainer) 40:00 [3]
(injured)

Monday Mar 7

machines 50:00 [3]
(injured)
Cross, 20; bike, 30.

Sunday Mar 6

Orienteering 1:02:27 [1]*** 3.2 km (19:31 / km)
spiked:14/15c (injured)
Mt TOM, northeast kingdom, all off-trail, all walking. 6-15 inches of soft snow, OK for trekking. One 30 second mistake. If I can't train physically, at least I can work on my mapreading skills.

Saturday Mar 5

Trail Run 38:30 [3] 4.5 mi (8:33 / mi)
(injured)
Outer XC loop from Smith. A struggle. Time to consider alternative forms of exercise, even the dreaded pool.

Friday Mar 4

Road Run 24:22 [3] 2.9 mi (8:23 / mi)
ahr:141 max:151 (injured)
Painful.

Thursday Mar 3

Trail Run 51:50 [3] 5.0 mi (10:21 / mi)
ahr:136 max:153 (injured)
Snowmobile trail from Atkins Reservoir. (Long uphill on M&M to meet the power line, then along the power line down to the bottom. Then up and down coming back. Very soft snow. "Resistance training."

Tuesday Mar 1

machines 50:00 [3]
(injured)
At Smith after lifting. Bike: 30 minutes, about as hard as I can do the stationary bike with HR over 140 for a couple of five minute stretches. Crosstrainer: 20. Cold is starting to improve, though I'll be coughing for a while.
