Monday May 30

Orienteering (sprint) 18:24 [5]*** 2 km (9:12 / km)
Orienteering still sucked.
Orienteering (sprint) 22:25 [5]*** 2.1 mi (10:40 / mi)
Sucked some more.
Trail/Road Run 10:00 [2] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
Warm-up before first sprint

Sprint 1 - Splits

sprint 2 - Splits

Sunday May 29

Event: Memorial Day Weekend US Team Fundraiser

Orienteering 2:02:07 [4]*** 8.2 km (14:54 / km)
DVOA team fundraiser at Stuckey Pond. Nice to be orienteering again; hip seems to be on the mend. But, unfortunately, my orienteering sucked. (The golf with Peter, Charlie, and Gail -- after a 20 year layoff -- was promising though.)
Trail/Road Run 5:00 [2] 0.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
Modest warm-up.

Red - Splits

Saturday May 28

Orienteering (teaching) 37:50 [1] 2.3 km (16:27 / km)
Designed a white course (with a couple of yellow controls) for Adam at Mt. Tom. Focus was on keeping the map oriented, and thumbing. Mostly jogging, some walking, standing still while Adam planned the route to the next control. Time includes about 6 minutes standing around (getting eaten by mosquitos) near a yellow control that confused, then frustrated Adam. But he's making good progress.

Friday May 27

cycling 48:49 [3]
ahr:132 max:151
Leeds loop, medium-hard. 26:42.

Thursday May 26

Orienteering 1:29:44 [3]*** 6 km (14:57 / km)
ahr:134 max:157
Did this year's Billygoat controls 1-6, adding 9 between 2 and 3. Includes slow jog to start and back from 6. Very slow - it's a jungle out there this time of year, with low visibility. Also, glasses kept fogging: they're worthless when the air is saturated, even though it wasn't raining, and I pocketed them halfway through. Seemed to lack confidence today, which made for a lot of hesitation, and standing still looking at the map. At least I spiked 5 this time! Hip a bit sore by the end, but not bad at this pace.

Wednesday May 25

machines (elliptical, h15) 36:00 [3]
ahr:139 max:158
At Smith Olin Center, after a lot of stretching and strengthening. Cut short by an "attendant": 30 minute max when people are waiting.

Tuesday May 24

Trail/Road Run 23:10 [4] 2.9 mi (7:59 / mi)
ahr:150 max:163
4 laps around Smith fields with one break in the middle, in cold rain, after lots of lifting. Got my heartrate up. 6:16 (139), 5:50 (151), 2 minute stretch, 5:31 (152), 5:33 (160).

Sunday May 22

Trail Run 26:26 [3] 3.1 mi (8:31 / mi)
Noho XCountry course. 8:49, 8:20, 8:29. 47.

Saturday May 21

cycling 1:03:24 [3]
ahr:135 max:152
Haydenville loop, about as fast as I ever do it. Pushed somewhat hard the whole way. (HR says effort is a 3, but my legs say 4 or 5.) 17.5 mph. 10:01, 17:32, 25:39, 36:18, 45:24.

Friday May 20

Trail/Road Run 23:12 [3] 2.9 mi (7:59 / mi)
ahr:144 max:159
After the usual half hour stretching and lifting, did four laps around Smith fields, with stretching in between. Faster than last time, but felt the strain in my hip. 6:08 (136), 5:49 (143), 5:39 (148), 5:35 (151).

Thursday May 19

machines (elliptical) 45:00 [3]
"foothills" h14. 833 c.

Wednesday May 18

Orienteering 2:13:16 [3]*** 9.3 km (14:20 / km)
ahr:135
Did the first 11 controls of the 1990 Billygoat. Leisurely pace, jogging trails and open woods. Good map contact throughout. Nice outing, hopefully the beginning of getting back into some kind of orienteering shape.

Tuesday May 17

Trail/Road Run 18:13 [3] 2.17 mi (8:23 / mi)
ahr:141 max:155
3 laps on the dirt track around the Smith fields, with stretching between each. Better than it's been, but still a ways from being able to stride normally (faster than a jog). A bit scary how high my heartrate got at this pace. 6:16, 6:07, 5:50.
Trail/Road Run 2:46 [2] 0.3 mi (9:13 / mi)
Slow jog before and after.

Monday May 16

machines 45:00 [3]
ahr:129 max:149
Elliptical, h14. 820 c.

Sunday May 15

Orienteering 1:08:00 [2] 3.2 km (21:15 / km)
Went with Adam to NEOC event at Hale. We started off doing an easy orange together, stopping a lot for instruction and route planning. We jogged the trails and mostly walked in the woods. I had thought about trying to jog the sprint course (to earn some much-needed sprint points!), but made the smart decision to make the day all about Adam's orienteering.
Orienteering 23:56 [2] 2 km (11:58 / km)
After a five minute rest, Adam did the white course with me shadowing, usually about 20 meters behind. The course was pretty easy, though the trails had lots of twists, turns, and junctions, and some unmapped pseudo-trails. I intervened three times to stop Adam from mistakes. No telling what would have happened to him if I had let him head off in the wrong direction -- but I thought it important for him to have a positive experience in his first "race" (which he did) -- and we can find out how well he re-locates at some future date! Only the Parsons' kids were faster.

As for me: I was encouraged to be able to run without pain, though my hip was a bit sore after.

Saturday May 14

cycling 47:25 [3]
ahr:136 max:152
Leeds loop, tried to keep a pretty hard effort the whole way, though lost some time in Smith traffic at the end. Leg muscles sore above the knees. 10:07, 17:35, 25:24.
18.0 mph -- or 18.2 mph?

Puzzle: computer said 14.2 miles this time, 14.4 miles last time I did it. I've noticed similar discrepancies on other rides. What causes the inconsistency? Every time I looked, the mph window had a reading, so I don't think the sensor ever stopped picking up the signal from the wheel. Could differences in tire inflation count for that much? I inflated them to the max for this ride, which means a greater wheel circumference, which means the sensor would pick up fewer wheel revolutions and "think" I had gone less far.

Thursday May 12

Orienteering 1:12:38 [2]*** 4.7 km (15:27 / km)
ahr:126 max:155
Plan was to do an o-hike at Norwottuck, taking the map with the 1990 Billygoat and doing 11 to the finish (up to the top for 13). But tried jogging some coming down the trail from the top, and since it felt OK, I mostly jogged the rest.

Wednesday May 11

machines (elliptical (true)) 30:00 [3]

Tuesday May 10

cycling 1:16:13 [3]
ahr:135 max:157
Westhampton-Haydenville loop, nice day, not much wind. A good steady effort: 22.4 m., 17.4 mph. Almost got killed in Florence going around and between cars at a red light; need to remember that an instant of poor judgment on the bike can have serious consequences! (Ever since I was a kid, I have unwittingly visualized my own death by all manner of accident; this time I saw my head under the wheel of a car. Yuck.)
22:11, 38:24, 57:43. (Last split (total time) is an estimate.)

Sunday May 8

cycling 1:06:12 [3]
Haydenville loop, 16.8 mph. Strong north wind. 11:04, 19:00, 27:52, 39:54, 49:07.
Note
Orienteering walk with Adam on Mt Tom map, teaching him some of the basics. He's not quite ready to do a white course on his own, but almost. Important thing is that he enjoyed it, and wants to do more. He's doing 3 mile runs and planning to do XCountry next fall in middle school, so I think the fitness and speed will be there if he takes up orienteering.

Saturday May 7

machines (elliptical) 30:00 [3]
Between papers at the Matthews conference.

Friday May 6

machines (elliptical) 30:00 [4]
h15, 586 cal. Put out a good effort on two long "hills". MHR: 159.

Wednesday May 4

machines (elliptical) 50:00 [2]
With mapreading. That reduced the effort I put out, but it sure made the time pass quickly!

Tuesday May 3

machines (elliptical) 45:00 [3]
ahr:132 max:154
Pushed the "hills". h14. 807c

Sunday May 1

cycling 2:08:13 [3]
Conway loop, didn't push very hard climbing up rt 116. 34.7 m, 16.3 mph. AHR: 123. 47:08, 25:47, 37:03, 18:16.
