Orienteering race 1:16:00 [4]*** 5.9 km (12:53 / km) +205m 10:58 / km
spiked:9/12c
Day 2, on Long Mountain West. Much more interesting courses, with more route choice. I should have been faster today, but I had nothing in the tank, and my left hamstring started cramping half-way through. And I turned a one-minute miss at 2 into a five minute error by -- once again-- having tunnel vision: the map was shouting "you're over here!" (it was obvious), but I couldn't hear it because I was looking "over there" near the control circle, where I was supposed to be. Argh. Lost about 8 minutes total on three legs. I think I finished 5th in M50.

Event: West Point A-Meet

Orienteering race 1:12:31 [4]*** 5.9 km (12:17 / km) +275m 9:58 / km
spiked:9/11c
West Point A-meet, Green, on Long Mountain East. Rather bland courses (set by a novice coursesetter); physically challenging terrain with lots of blueberry, lots of rocky ground, and lots of climb. A decent run with one 3 minute error (got on the wrong side of a big knoll approaching 8). Tripped and took a header heading down the hill to the trail to the go control and my right calf cramped. Probably lost almost a minute all tolled by the time I hobbled down to the trail and could start running again. Really spent and dehydrated towards the end.
Orienteering 19:49 [3] 2.2 km (9:00 / km)
Peter's annual West Point sprint. With my calf hurting, and energy depleted, I just jogged the course. (Would have been more fun to try to do it fresh, at top speed, but that wasn't to be.) I lost 15 seconds or so going to the wrong spectator control. And I hesitated before entering the narrow space in the building because I expected from the map to be able to see the flag from outside. Otherwise, just a couple of 5 second misses.

Orienteering 55:00 [3] 4 km (13:45 / km)
Mt Tom. Smashed my left shin for the third time in two weeks. Had some trouble keeping contact at far north edge of the map.

Trail Run 57:10 [3] 3.7 mi (15:26 / mi)
weight:147lbs
First and last section of the Seven Sisters trail race. M&M trail from the Notch Visitor Center, over Bare Mt. and Mt. Hitchcock to the Low Place, then back. Midday warmth and sun. A bit of a struggle coming back. Forerunner says this is about 3.7 miles. I wonder how close the whole race is to the advertised 12 miles. 9:59 (fence corner), 10:50 (ruin at Hitchcock), 6:34 (27:23) (low place), 9:53, 11:58, 8:23 (29:47).

Monday Apr 23

Trail Run 35:16 [3] 4.1 mi (8:36 / mi)
Outer loop from Smith, after lifting.
