Note
J-J's lost key anecdote (in response to those of PG and Swampfox):

It was the fall of 1991. I was mapping in Harriman State Park, in New York, the SW part of Surebridge Mountain. I drove from Baker Camp, where I was staying, over to the corner of the map and parked the car. I got my map board and bag of pencils together, then got out of the car and shut the door... and got the sinking feeling of realization... that my keys were on the seat of the car. Locked out. Oh well, deal with it later I figured, and went off to spend the morning mapping. Came back to the car at lunchtime and set about dealing with the situation. I had a spare key hidden behind the driver's side parking light, and all I needed was a Phillips screwdriver to get at it. And there was such a screwdriver on my Swiss Army knife... but that wasn't in my pencil bag, it was back at camp. I could run back to camp and get it, but that was a decent haul. I searched the shoulder of the road for some piece of metal that I could use as a makeshift screwdriver, but all I found was some pop-tops (and they didn't work).

Then a car pulled into the lot. Maybe the driver would have some tools! I walked over to talk to him, and it was... Pat Dunlavey! My boss! The guy in charge of this mapping project! This was unexpected, because Pat lived over a hundred miles away, in NW Massachusetts. Turned out he was returning from some business in NYC or something, and just swung by on a whim in case he could find any of the mappers. Great! Got a screwdriver, Pat? Nope, brand new car, nothing in the trunk at all. But Pat was interested in taking a look at my fieldwork, so I traded my map board for his car keys, and he went for a walk in the woods while I drove back to Baker Camp to get my knife. Problem solved through preposterous luck and some clever planning.

(I think there had been an earlier episode where I locked my keys in the car at an O-meet, and had to get a ride home to get my spare, 45 minutes or so each way. That's why I went for the hidden spare.)

Okay, Charlie, your turn to tell a lost key story. :-)

Well, that's one month down. Certainly not a ramp, partially a streak, but mostly a variegated picket fence. The one slat that's out of place is the hang gliding on the 7th, which was a day early, but you take that when you can get it.

So have the exercises gotten me all whipped into shape? Nah. I think I'm heavy, flabby, and slow. And I have not a single ab. Or cloit.

But a new month starts tomorrow. Time to rachet things up a notch.

Running in terrain 46:38 [3]
Lane-Horse-Seaver-Howl loop. Temperature just above 20 F, which, when I started, somehow seemed colder than recent nightime runs in the teens had felt. Then I realized that the difference was that I was wearing O-pants but not long underwear as I had been at night (long-sleeve poly top, T-shirt, and light jacket were the same). But by the time I got to the Townsend line, I had warmed up enough that the hat and gloves came off. Wasn't feeling all that enthusiastic about running, but I figured why waste a chance to get out on a really nice moning like this?

Ice skating 5:15 [3]
A few laps around Big Down Marsh, while on a walk to Cherry Brook Farm and back with Charlie and the dogs. Many winters have no skating opportunities at all, so it's nice to get something in. Ice was in pretty good condition, with just a few snow patches that were easy to skate through, and limited rough areas. I found it a lot of fun to be skating around all the pylons (dead trees) -- a really big marsh like that would be a blast.

Running in terrain 59:22 [2] 7.3 km (8:08 / km)
Lane-Horse-Seaver-Howl loop. In The Dark (Petzl headlamp), with light snow for most of the time. Had to go slower because it's just harder to find my way around at night doing this, and I also walked some uphills. Made it though the tricky sections without much trouble. I seem to have an intermittent connection in the headlamp wiring, because it kept winking out every few seconds unless I held the fanny pack containing the batteries a particular way, and that was tiring for my arm. Need to troubleshoot that before I use this light again.

The snowsnakes were out in force in the laurel jungle; they've been cooped up all these months, and now they're going nuts. I made it through unscathed, but had I been wearing anything like skis or snowshoes, I'm sure there's no way I could have eluded them, and I would have succumbed out there, not to be seen or heard from again until my blanched, bloated corpse was discovered sometime in the spring.

I was busy during daylight hours, and by the time I got free, it was pitch black, temps in the low teens, and wind like Laramie on a calm day (Beaufort 5 or so). So I just couldn't get psyched to go outside, and decided to watch some more of Blade Runner instead. I really need to do something about the acoustics in the front hall, which suck, especially when you're watching a movie where people mumble a lot. I put thick pipe insulation on the handlebars, which seems to have been helpful -- it's still definitely not comfortable, but the hand numbness was considerably reduced. Lost my balance three times, I think, but I was able to put a hand on the wall and stay upright.

Chestnut-Highland loop, at night, temperature right around freezing. A light drizzle started shortly after I went out, and about halfway around, I had to take my glasses off because they had become coated with ice. Lovely. After that the road got somewhat slippery, and at the end there was some weird white stuff falling out of the sky, don't what the heck it was, sure didn't look familiar. There now seems to be an extremely thin coating of it all over the ground. Bizarre.

Note
Bowled four games of candlepins with Nancy and Stephen. If I were a bowler, I suppose I could count this as training, but I'm not, so I can't. At the end, we had a few minutes left (the lane with the gutter-bumpers goes by the hour, rather than by the game), so I bowled the last game at maximum speed, just like a memorable game of duckpins on Billygoat Eve ten years ago. And just like that time, I had my best game on the speed round. As per PG's suggestion, I did at one point grab a ball in each hand, but it threw off my balance. I did better by grabbing balls from the return chute before they hit the ramp, which saved me a few steps of backing up.

Chestnut-Highland loop, in the dark, with a small flashlight that I turned on a couple of times, and an LED blinky on my back. (Had to stop for a minute near the end when I reached back to make sure the blinky was still there, and it went flying off, and the case came open -- took me a minute to find the parts on the shoulder of the road. Cheap Wal-Mart piece of junk.) Temperature around 16F, so I was bundled up, and I did experience some wheezing by the end. The trees look kind of neat all coated with verglas, and I was thinking that maybe I'd try to get some pictures when the sun comes out tomorrow, but usually with these conditions you have a pretty white background, not the brown that we have now.

Sit-ups and push-ups were done in the dark (without the hatlamp) because the power went out. And it stayed out for quite a while, more than an hour, I think. If we get any sun tomorrow, this place is going to look amazing with all the ice coating everything. Not surprising that some lines went down, there must be branches crashing down all over the place out there. Maybe I should take my ice skates out on the trails.

Sunday Jan 14

Bicycle rollers 40:00 [2]
Didn't feel like going outside in the cold drizzle, so I fired up a DVD of the director's cut of Blade Runner and went for a ride on the Incubus in the front hallway. This movie is interesting in that it has a bunch of audio effects that sound like a bicycle malfunctioning. Much more competent on the rollers than the last time I did this, basically hopped right on and was able to keep my eyes on the movie screen the whole time. My main problem was that I couldn't get my hands comfortable. This was the main reason why I quit when I did, because my right hand was getting very numb (among other things). Not sure why I don't have this problem when I ride the bike outdoors. Next time maybe I should try wearing gloves, or putting some pipe insulation on the tops of the bars for padding.

Hang gliding! (Morningside) 30:00 [4] +220m
shoes: Wal*Mart Carson
Hang Gliding! In January! In New Hampshire! Yes!

An excellent day, with appropriate wind speeds and reasonable wind direction. And warm! Six HG pilots showed up for a fine outing. Carried up to the 150' for 5 flights, then rode the ATV to the 250' for 6 more. My first two flights were terrible, attributable perhaps to the fact that these were my first experiences with my new harness, which is rather different from the training harnesses and takes a little getting used to. Really botched the landings. But after that, it was sweet, I got my groove back, managed to get my feet in the harness and go fully prone, and had a truly fine time. Nancy came along and took pictures, some of which I might try to post later on. Woohoo! (Not to be confused with Yowzah!; there was none of that.)

Increase in speed from two days ago can probably be attributed to the fact that I knew where I was going, and didn't slow down at each decision point to consider which way looked more interesting. Running in terrain 45:08 [3]
Exploration of ATV trails of various sizes in the Willard Brook southeast area. Nice timing, got back to the car just as it was getting dark. The woods were nicer (i.e. more free from laurel) than I was expecting, good enough that I'll be doing some off-trail running there in the future. I had dismissed this state forest years ago as far as orienteering potential, but I had never been down in this section. Parking would be available at Pearl Hill, easier courses could stay in the campground area, and advanced courses could cross the road. Certainly worth further investigation to determine if there's enough good terrain to make this worthwhile.

Note
Everybody seems to be summarizing 2006, so I might as well do so as well. This was my first full year of logging training on here, so I don't have any prior years to compare with. Looks like I put in just under 197 hours, of which 76 hours was orienteering competitions, and a bunch more was related stuff (course setting and mapping). 2006 started with the longest hiatus from orienteering that I've had in a long time, so my orienteering volume was down quite a bit from recent years.

I will note that I logged more unicycling than canoeing this year, even though all of the unicycling was near the end. Basically, I didn't paddle much -- if memory serves, I didn't do any regular canoe races at all (just canoe-O).

My orienteering "spike rate" is 82%. That's interesting. I don't know whether I'm a really sloppy orienteer, or if I've got stricter standards for what constitutes a spike than other people have. Maybe some of both. No question that there's considerable time to be saved when I'm orienteering in terms of improved navigation.

10 hang gliding sessions, totaling up to about 4.5 hours. I expect that in 2007, I will have more days of hang gliding, but less time logged, since I log only the time I spend carrying the glider up the hill, and that should drop dramatically, now that I'm flying from higher and riding the ATV to launch. All together, I got maybe 45 minutes of airtime in 2006, but that was mostly in snippets of less than 30 seconds each. My flight durations (and total fight time) should increase considerably from this point forward.

I had 9 CMC sessions, for a total of 42 whacks, in 2006. Goal is to reduce that dramatically (ideally to zero) in 2007.

Every year I start out by doing some simple exercises on a daily basis, though that has always fallen by the wayside after a few months. Let's see what happens when I try logging it on Attackpoint.
