Unicycling 12:00 [2]
Time approximate. Before and after trick-or-treating (no, not me personally, just accompanying the Koehlers). With a cheapo headlamp that I picked up and Home Depot and keep in the glove compartment in case I need to do auto repairs at night. Good thing I showed up, because Dan brought the kids out with no flashlight, then left about halfway through. (Nancy showed up later, and had ample light.)

Running in terrain 3:00:00 [1]
Time estimated. This was traipsing, mostly through soft sand and breakwater rocks, to visit lighthouses in Provincetown with Nancy. Very little running per se was involved, but it's still a lot of work when the surface is so soft. The Province Lands area would make a pretty interesting place for orienteering, and if you held a relay based at the Visitor Center, the observation deck would provide great viewing for plenty of spectator controls. Plenty of parking, and in the off-season, lodging is pretty reasonable. Takes forever to get there, though. Unless you fly into Provincetown, in which case you could walk from the airport.
Note
No hang gliding. Got up before dawn, set up the glider, watched a few other guys (much more experienced than me) launch into strong winds that had them landing after not so long, saying that they didn't feel too comfortable up there, and put away my glider and went back to bed. There was also the detail that my harness was still in the closet back home.

When the temperature is hovering around 70 F between 8 and 9 PM, and it's nice and dry, that's fine weather (even if it is waaaaaay too windy for hang gliding). And so I ventured forth on a Lane-Mystery-Seaver loop, In The Dark(hatlamp). I had planned to do the Horse trail, but when I reached the laurel jungle I did something wrong, and found myself on the Mystery Blazes. That was pretty painless, so I decided to see if I could follow them going north. The first section after the trail crossing was easy, then when the woods got nice, the navigation got tough, because there's no track to follow on the ground, and all there is to go by is the tiny paint blotches. I winged it once and was lucky to get back on track, and there were definitely a few times when I was standing next to a blaze, looking around with no idea where to go next. At the end, I seem to have gotten onto an alternate route through the saplings, because I came across a stone wall that I don't remember seeing before that took me to the Friendly Trail. After that I sort of zoned out, and wasn't paying attention to where I was going — a few times I wondered whether I was going the right way at all (which I was). Haven't done this in quite a while, and it felt pretty nice.

Note
Dad turned 85 today, tipping the scales at somewhere in the vicinity of 0.78G, and to be honest, doing pretty well for someone of that age. He can still move around under his own power, and still splits wood to heat the house. We'll see how he does with the snowblower this winter. He does have some problems with strength or flexibility or something that makes it difficult for him to do things like getting in and out of a car. The biggest problem is that his balance isn't very good, but he won't admit it, so he falls down fairly often. No broken bones, but he does tend to cut himself in the process. Somebody please remind me when I get to that point that there's no shame in using a cane.

Beaver Brook Association, UNO local meet, Red. Pretty pathetic performance. I was having a bit of trouble breathing due to allergies, and that may have reduced the oxygen to my brain a bit, explaining some small portion of my mental lameness. Sloppy early on, not paying enough attention to what I was doing later. Granted, it is pretty technical out there, but some of my mistakes were things where I should just know better.

Note
In addition to the Highlander having gone pretty successfully for me, I am happy to find that it left me essentially unscathed. In particular, I seem to have no blisters, and none of my toenails seem to have taken offense at this mistreatment. Pretty pleasing.

Since I was passing by Talcott Mountain on the way back from having spent the night at Charlie's, and it was a nice morning, I decided to stop and check out the big main trail up to the ridge. This wasn't really running, it was a brisk walk on a pretty wide and smooth trail. Naturally, when I got up to the launch, there was a brisk breeze blowing straight in, and I just smiled, imagining what it would be like if I had brought my hang glider with me...

Hudson Highlander XII. Pretty fine course this year, and I did pretty well, finishing in 12th place, about 10 minutes behind PG and a minute or so ahead of JoeB (first finisher of the Stubborn Seven). Kept moving reasonably well for the whole course, and felt much better when it was done than I have in many previous years. Only one significant goof (took the indistinct trail that turned out to be horrible instead of the one that turned out to be good, and got stuck in a horrendous laurel thicket), which cost me something on the order of 10 minutes.

Various sore muscles in my legs, presumably a result of Thursday's aerial adventures. We'll see how they do tomorrow. I saw Stephen this afternoon (after his performance as the Dormouse in Alice in Wonderland), and he wished me success in the Highlander, saying that he hoped for a top-50 finish for me, and then revised that up to top-30. Have to try to not disappoint him!

Well!

115 minutes of flying, with very little wind, so ridge soaring wasn't going to work. But the lapse rate and buoyancy/shear ratio were good, I guess (whatever they are), which meant that we had thermals. And that meant that I got to push my PR for altitude up to 5160 feet (my old PR was 3620 feet).

The logged part of this was vehicle retrieval, because we didn't have a designated driver today, so I volunteered to go up on foot to get the truck. About half on trails, and half through the woods, obviously including some hellaciously steep stuff. I think there's room for improvement on the route choice, although this was okay.
