Orienteering race 1:44:52 [3]**** 6.5 km (16:08 / km)
spiked:14/16c shoes: VJ Falcons #1
Red course, Beaver Brook, totally oppressive weather (I've orienteered in worse, but I didn't like it then, either). Fine course, though the woods were a bit thick in spots. See my split comments for more information about my mid-course detour to assist Stephen Koehler.

Red - Splits

Saturday Jun 17

Note
I've got a huge, wicked bruise on the back of my left calf. No idea how it got there. I didn't even realize I had it until Nicole asked about it this morning, and I looked. No memory of what the injury was. My first inclination is to think that it happened at the Rogaine, but would it have gone unnoticed for a week? I don't think I did anything while hang gliding that would have caused it. I suppose it's possible that I whacked it with a unicycle pedal Thursday evening. It is somewhat tender. A mystery.

Hang gliding! (Morningside) 5:00 [4]+45m
Carried glider up to the 150' for the first flight of the day, but because of the toasty weather conditions, I opted to ride the ATV up for the remaining seven flights. Essentially no wind, which presents its own kind of challenges (have to run hard and fast to take off), but things went very well. Looks like next time I go, I'll be able to move up to the 250' launch.

Running in terrain 1:02:05 [3]+390m
Wapack Trail, up Mt. Watatic, then down the dirt road a way and up Nutting Hill. I intended to take the shortcut back to the road, but armed only with a glance at the map posted at the trailhead, I failed to find the trail in question, and wound up taking the Wapack almost to the top of Watatic a second time. I skied at this place at least once, when I was in high school. Hard to even tell where the ski trails used to be at this point.

Hang gliding! (Morningside) 1:04:00 [4]+585m
Pushing/carrying the glider up the hill, to various points between 75 and 140 feet, on 16 out of 17 flights. Probably the most airtime I've gotten to date, though it still amounts to not much over five minutes. Almost all of the flights went great, with just two where I ran out of altitude and had to land downwind (but the downwind landings were still okay). I seem to be getting the hang of this; several people commented that I was doing very well.
Road running 12:25 [4]1.36 km (9:08 / km) +137m 6:04 / km
Morningside 450 x 1. After all the glider-carrying I did, I figured one trip up would suffice. And I wanted to avoid getting hit by the approaching lightning.

Note
Nothing that would qualify as "training" per se today, but I did ride my bike down to the convenience store to pick up a couple of things, and I also spent a few minutes starting to relearn something that I've only barely learned how to do in the past: unicycling. I took possession of the family unicycle this weekend, and maybe I can learn how to ride it properly. Going down and up Gilchrest would make a nice little training ride, provided the first part isn't too scary.
