Orienteering race 1:04:09 [4]*** 5.7 km (11:15 / km)
spiked:18/19c shoes: VJ Falcons #1
Crystal Relay, Antenna Hill, leg 1. Yeah, spiked all but one, but it was the first one, and it was a big blunder. Started out with the lead pack, but when we dropped off the edge, I went further to the right than they did. If I had really committed and gone way right, I would have been okay, but I didn't stop to read the map long enough, and I went into the worst of the nasty green. When I finally extricated myself, I overcorrected too far to the left, then wasn't quite certain where I was, and I wound up overshooting, going too far downhill, and had to loop back. Finally arrived right behind Gale Teschendorf, and I may have been the last person to arrive at the first control; lost at least six minutes, I think. Spent the rest of the course reeling people in and worked my way back up to 17th place. Not a very auspicious start for my team.
Note
Turned in a value of 1.06 G at the official G Weigh-In.

Crystal Relay Leg 1 - Splits

Tuesday Aug 15

Note
Did not do the Sprint. Was not feeling up to it, and just hung around instead. Did play 9 holes of prairie golf afterwards, though, and shot a 62.

Monday Aug 14

Event: US Night Champs

Night-O race 1:21:39 [4]*** 8.8 km (9:17 / km)
spiked:8/10c shoes: VJ Falcons #1
US Night-O Champs, The Lights of Cheyenne, Red course. 7th overall, 2nd US M45. Not too bad a run, just uncertainty going to the first control, and difficulty reading the vegetation on the way into #3. Somewhat ill (digestive problems), so it's certainly not a disappointing result. Managed to keep up more of a decent running pace than I had on the weekend, due in part to favorable temperatures.

Night-O - Red - Splits

Sunday Aug 13

Orienteering race 1:28:19 [3]*** 7.4 km (11:56 / km) +285m 10:00 / km
spiked:14/18c
Superfly Marsh. Wasn't sure whether I was going to go out today, since I didn't have much to eat yesterday (and have been under some stress), and when I ultimately did it was getting fairly hot in the middle of the day. Felt pretty sloppy a lot of the time, and ranout of gas after about an hour and was mostly walking from then on.

Red 2 - Splits

Saturday Aug 12

Orienteering race 1:17:40 [3]*** 8.02 km (9:41 / km) +280m 8:15 / km
spiked:15/18c
Twin Boulders East, Red course. 21st place, but 3rd M40. Not too bad navigationally, about three smallish errors near the controls. But evidentally not moving very fast. But it's my first exercise since arriving here at altitude.

Red 1 - Splits

Thursday Aug 10

Note
Drove from Iowa to Laramie. 2500 miles behind the wheel since Saturday.
