Orienteering race 4:16:46 [3] *** 24.71 km (10:23 / km) +730m 9:03 / km
spiked:22/25c shoes: VJ Falcons #1

Hudson Highlander XI, beautiful day. Course must have been a bit on the easy side (despite all the rocks and blueberry), because this was my best Highlander time by something like 15 minutes. Moving pretty well for the whole thing, still mostly running even at the end, never reduced to trudging. Navigation was fine, the three that weren't spikes were poorly executed routes, where I got partway and realized that I was off my line, but managed to correct and didn't have any trouble finding the control. Pretty fair amount of company out there, although I spent a decent amount of time navigating at the front of the pack. First finisher among the seven remaining diehards. No significant injuries, just one ankle sore from hitting it on a rock, definitely in better post-race condition than at any previous Highlander.

Unicycling 30:00 [3] 1.83 mi (16:24 / mi)

Turkey Hill loop, time estimated. The new seat is decidedly better, and Darren's advice about seat height was correct, I'm quite comfortable being much higher up. Still need practice with the new, more upright posture, and keeping my weight on the seat. But I only stopped about six times, and half of those were early on. From the farmhouse, around the loop, and back to the farmhouse, I had only two stops, shortly before and shortly after the end of Turkey Hill Road. So it looks like the longest stretch was somewhat over 3/4 mile without stopping (and including one intersection). Might have made it all the way home, but I had cars passing going both directions when I was on a slight upgrade, and that was too much to deal with. Serious crunchiness from the right side, which I had been thinking was the main bearings, but I'm now thinking that it might be just the pedal, which is much easier to deal with. Need to ask Dad if he has any more handy.
