My shoulders are a little bit sore, presumably as a consequence of the paddling on Wednesday.

Wednesday Sep 26

Canoeing race 53:07 [3] 5.0 mi (10:37 / mi)
Norumbega Wednesday night series, with Aims in the C-2. A hot and windy night, with the river very low and very weedy. We took a head start of probably close to 10 minutes, and about eight of the kayaks caught and passed us. Pretty hot for autumn, enough so that we didn't wear shirts. Not too bad a time, considering the conditions and how little paddling I've done this year.

Lead-off Green leg for ineligible WCOC 4-point team, followed by Peter Goodwin, Clint Morse, and Peter Grollman. Screwed up #2 in a minor way, not that I was really paying much attention to the map yet at that point, and not like anybody else really spiked it. But I made up for that by starting the third leg at the back of the pack, and beating them all to the control by means of a better route choice. Except for Jon Torrance, I think, who also had the good route, but I believe I spotted him up ahead later, when he had no business being within sight. Dropped off the pace a bit in the second third of the course, and the only person I saw from then on was Vanessa Wood, who was with me the whole way. Handed off in 10th place, and thence followed fine runs by my teammates, finishing us up as fifth place team (not too shabby!)

Hang gliding! 1 [0]
shoes: Wal*Mart Carson
Took the gamble on the weather and drove to Ellenville, NY after the relays. After working out the details of what I needed to do in order to get cleared to fly, I got an early evening launch in smooth lift, and hung out on the ridge for about 79 minutes, coming in to land because the sun was going down. Avoided making a fool of myself, too: I had a picture-perfect landing after watching another guy whack into the pumpkin patch (there were at least four of those today).

Orienteering and hang gliding on the same day — so fine!
