US Team Trials at Stinchfield Woods, north of Ann Arbor, MI. I ran the Red course which was Middle Distance. Though feeling less drained from being sick than the previous day, I still wasn't running very fast. I had one bad error on #4 which cost me about 4-5 minutes. I had a few other smaller problems zeroing-in on the control. The area was detailed ridge and valley terrain but with lots of detail and often light green woods mapped as white.

US Team Trials at Highland State Recreation Area (near Detroit, MI) on the Haven Hill Map. I ran the Red/Blue Sprint and was fairly accurate. I just felt too weak from being sick to run faster. I bobble #5 by passing it just a bit--I expected it on the other side of the clearing rather than the edge of the forest that I'd crossed. I caught another guy for the last several controls but just couldn't go fast enough to pass him. On the run-in I passed Evelyn Brautigam (around 10-11 years old) who was walking at the time. Lucky for me, she had a cramp. I wondered if I'd have to sprint to beat her in and whether I could or not. It was a nice 65 F day and very breezy at times.

45 situps. Still feeling pretty worn out.

Manassas Battlefield Park, VA; Groveton Parking Area. Peggy, Paul, Max and I enjoyed some time outdoors. It was about 79F when I started just after 2pm. Before I'd gone 100m, my head started throbbing. My thighs, hurt yesterday, still hurt but not as much. I wondered if I'd be able to finish. I settled into a steady pace and just kept going. Eventually, my stomach started bothering me too. I made a slight error at #2, then backed out to avoid the deadfall, then was hitting things pretty good till #12. At #12, some unmapped deadfall made me back out and go around again. I got confused on the way to #13 and kept reading the wrong side of the ridge. After a loop there, I finished the rest well but slow. I was glad to have finished at all. I enjoyed the new area. The subtled 2.5m contours coupled with a mix of open woods, rough and open fields and some rock features made this a pretty good area. The map could have used some fixing in places--deadfall extended beyond what was mapped and broken rock walls were mapped as stony ground or not at all. Hopefullly I'll recover from this illness soon.
