Rock Creek Park, MD. From Mark Twain School and Park, once again I walked and sometimes broke into short jogs while tracking areas with a GPS. I covered east and west sides of Rock Creek between Rte. 28 and Avery Rd. I checked/fixed the drafting which I'd done earlier and gathered data on other areas too. While checking the many cairns and finding new ones I took the time to improve most of them. I gathered stones from the edges of the genereally 6-8ft. diameter circles and stacked them to raise the centers. They are still somewhat smallish; usually no more than 2 ft. tall and often less but the stones are white quartz and stand out quite well. Under a lot of the stones I moved I found colonies of ants with many larva so I put some back. I found a small brown snake under one stone and a bumble bee nest under another. I found enough cairns to discern a linear pattern which was probably the edge of a farm field from long ago.

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. After starting moderately, I kept picking up the pace as I passed people. As I caught the fastest of the people I had been seeing ahead, just before the Canal Road bridge, a non commuting roadie passed quickly and accelerated. I hung on for a little over a mile but he was moving too quickly for me to try much harder (I didn't have my computer today but I guess he was going over 25mph on the flats) so I let him go. One guy behind passed and hung onto him for a way, then another guy came up and pulled me to Georgetown. I caught up with one of the guys who passed me earlier then tailwinds helped me finish up.

From the inner courtyard of my offices building I rode through the basement halls to the Indpendence Ave. Wing 1 entrance/exit, then via Independence Ave. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. I had to go through the building because it was after 6pm and the gate was locked. I could have made it out on time if I didn't have to grab my laptop and do some other things to prepare for my short trip to Kansas City on Monday. I rode easy partly becauase I was carrying a laptop and partly because I was a bit tired. I got some help as I started the climb. Another guy was moving just a bit faster but as we went along, he kept increasing the pace. I dropped off on the River Rd. bridge but he turned off at Dorsett Rd. anyway.

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I woke up a bit late again today. I've been massaging the Rockville Rock Creek map so that Dave will have enough time to use it for course setting a SSS. The training is to be on the 27th. Riding in today, I had the aid of tailwinds. One guy followed me from a distance all the way from Falls Rd. to Georgetown. I was doing about 22mph down the grade and about 20mph on the flats. I slowed the last half mile.

From 12th & C St., SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. I took it easier going into the wind. Somewhere around Georgetown, a guy started drafting off me. He eventually took some turns pulling, just at the places where I could use the help. We split at Bethesda. I was around 39 minutes getting to Max's day care where two curious toddlers were still waiting for their parents.

After mowing the lawn for a home inspection tommorow, I went out to Rock Creek Park, MD. From Mark Twain School and Park, I walked and sometimes broke into short jogs while tracking areas with a GPS. Though it was getting dark fast and I was mostly on east facing slopes, I was still able to cover and reposition features on the older map that I'm redoing. The old map was not georeferenced and the USGS contours that I used for a base map were not reliable. The new contours and georeferencing makes it much easier, even in low light.

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was headwindy and I felt the need to go slower after the ride yesterday. The temperature was cooler and maybe drier. At Falls Rd. I picked up a drafter with a large backpack for a few miles but on the flats we both got passed. I started to respond but at 23mph and still accelerating I didn't want to and may not have been able to keep up. The guy behind me with the backpack passed and trailed the leader. They slowed and I was 150m behind at the trail end in Georgetown. I caught the backpack rider again after getting through Georgetown. With all the wind, I thought this was a good effort.

From 12th & C St., SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. Winds were substantial but mixed. I kept a steady pace and passed people. A big bunch of more people were headed the other way, perhaps in a tour. I picked up a drafter for a little while and got to the day care in 38:01. The time surprised me since I thought I was going slower.

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. It was muggy this morning but in the low 70s F. The trail was damp from the rainy weekend. I was slower and felt the mild headwind most of the way. I also felt not having exercised much for a few days. A combination of birthdays, rainy weather and house hunting did me in despite some good intentions and plans to ride (all I did was splash around in a pool with Max, walk through some houses, and play minigolf). I got more sleep too. At least I did some more Rockville drafting in OCAD and weighed in lighter after the weekend--the lighter weight was probably from my haircut and having had watermelon yesterday.

From 12th & C St., SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. Downtown DC was still busy with people here for the 4th of July. Except for a few areas, I had pretty good tailwinds going home. It was so windy off the water that I saw a man in E. Potomac Park with a harnessed parasail and a sort of small but big wheeled and attached surfboard. He was on the flat grass and sailing. After passing several people on Water St. in Georgetown, I slowed down briefly while headed into the wind. One of the guys I passed passeed me back. He was on a track bike and carrying a satchel--standard courier attire but he didn't appear to be a courrier. I latched on to his draft and as the trail curved, we had tailwinds again. Doing 20mph on the flats, we climbed between 17-20mph up to Bethesda. I took a turn pulling but the other guy pulled much more than I. He turned off at Dorset Ave. I finished more slowly but was at Max's day care in 36:36, the fastest this year. I was sore in various places on my legs soon after finishing at home. I was faster going home predominantly uphill than I was going to work downhill.
