From 12th & C St., SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. It was hot so I planned a steady ride and pretty much did just that. I got some nice tailwinds early, then on the flat part of the trail some angled headwinds. After the water treatment plant it gradually turned to more of a tailwind again. I pulled up to Max's day care at around 38:30. Lots of people were there enjoying an international food festival. Lot's of the employees come from various foreign lands so there was a lot to choose from. I ate some rice and chicken dishes not altogether different from what my parents used to make. Afterward, I rode home with Max since Peggy had to pickup some groceries.

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. I was suprisingly spritely this morning. I didn't expect to be after having a hard time getting to sleep last night. My head was racing a bit after finding out that our house bid won out over another. We'll be only a mile or so away from our current place. On the ride, it was a little cooler. I got to Max's daycare quickly, then moved down the trail well picking up one drafter. As soon as I got to the flats, another person passed quickly. I'd have had to let him go if it weren't for the guy who was behind me bringing me back and letting us form a fast line. At Georgetown, we broke up and I moved ahead.

From 12th & C St., SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. It was a hot and dry day so I was surprised by the cloud burst that popped as I was about to head out. I waited and expected it to stop sooner than it did. Eventually I went out in the pouring rain. It started to slow quickly but I had to ride through one place with deep standing water. By the time I got to the Kennedy Center I could see some dry spots on the sidewalk and it was completely dry when I reached Thompson Boathouse. It seems the clould had been small but slow moving. Being soaked, I kept nice and cool for a while. I started warming going up the hill and drying off. However I was sweating again after the water treatment bridge. I reached the day care in about 39:30 which is not bad considering that I started out rather slow in the downpour. Riding with water on painted steet lines and on wooden bridges has caused more than one fall for me in the past.

Rock Creek Park, MD. Starting from the Lake Frank area, I started field checking an area east of Rock Creek between Avery Rd. and Southlawn Ln. I was close to Southlawn Ln. most of the time and found a detailed ditch/stream system, several boulders and a nice set of cliffs. However most of these were near roads or the hiker/biker trail. On higher ground there was more green terrain. For this block, I probably covered the most detailed ground so I anticipate being able to finish with another day sometime. I don't think this part will be used for the SSS which will be held in the area in just over a week.

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. Riding in with my laptop, I got a slowish start. I picked up a drafter for a while but kept my pace steady. Eventually he passed me and pulled me along at 23-25mph on the flats. I had just dropped off his pace when he all but stopped, being spent. I guess he was just trying to do his part. Except for that it was a fairly uneventful ride until heading into one of the two one-way tunnels near the Lincoln Memorial. The entrance to the first is blind until the last moment. Just as I was about to commit going in, I saw another rider entering from the opposite direction so I hit the brakes. My heaviness, the extra weight of the laptop on my back and brakes that need tightening had my stopping distance longer than usual. Realizing that I wouldn't stop before being inside the tunnel where another cyclist was already coming my way, I had to sharply turn away onto the grass and go a little up an embankment to avoid a potential jam and avoid hitting the wall.

From the inner courtyard of my offices building I rode through the basement halls again to the Indpendence Ave. Wing 1 entrance/exit, then via Independence Ave. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. I had to go through the building again because it was after 6pm and the gate was locked. This time I'd stayed late to be where I could communicate with our realtor as we made a house bid. Maybe the stress of buying a house tired me out because I was kind of slowish going home. There was a slight head wind going into Bethesda.
