NEOC Olderdash Master's Championships at Gunstock Resort in New Hampshire. This was the warm-up jog to the start of Day 2.

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:04:07 [4] 3.03 mi (21:10 / mi) +264m 16:39 / mi

NEOC Olderdash Master's Championships at Gunstock Resort in New Hampshire. I had a much better run this day.

S-1 - I knew Petr Hartman (DVOA) was starting only 2 minutes behind me and I was eager to go. I ran up the trail debating whether or not to use the woods on leg 2.

1-2 - The woods looked good so I plunged in. Just 15 seconds later I was cursing the decision. Though mapped mostly white, it didn't seem that way to me. The footing was slow for a while where it was open too. I hesitated a little after crossing the trail.

2-3 - Like a fool, I went straight, perhaps a bit panicked about my slow start. I got confused with the marsh and hills on the left seeming larger than expected from the map. Once on the trail, I paused a long time to find the trail intersection that I just ran past. I found it and went into the woods. I was hesitant, not matching up the rock very well since I was a little left. Staying more in the reentrant, Petr appeared ahead and clued me in by his presence to keep going on.

3-4 - I chased Petr, then passed him at the trail. With him on my heels, I plunged in angling up and spiking the spur control - not a hard leg.

4-5 - I ran up and over to the wall, then followed it up. I was a bit perplexed by this leg--a handrail to the top of a knoll and a cliff on the far end of the top was too easy. JJ must have been trying to avoid the trails and something with the other courses.

5-6 - Petr was still close behind me as I left #5. I aimed off a bit to the left, hit, never saw the trail going down but was probably on it; then on the big trail I ran to the field. From there I used the creek as a handrail.

6-7 - Petr was still not far back. I contoured left to avoid negative terrain and climbed angling toward the saddle next. I hit some green saplings that were either unmapped or the light green mapped near another trail that I never saw. It was like the thick saplings on the Day 1 course toward leg 5. I went around it to the left. I must have gotten sloppy climbing more straight up since at the top I ended going up a really steep part and came out in a rough open area. I crossed that to a stone wall and was sure then that I'd gotten too high. I hit the next open area and ran downward. I went back in the woods near the glade but should have dropped more first. I hung onto the reentrant left of the control for a while and started wondering if I passed the control. I could see Stephan coming down the hill quickly. We both cut over though Stephan was moving more quickly and directly. He got there ahead of me.

7-8 - I went straight, dropping down where the running was better. I matched up the ski trail crossings okay but was really happy to leave the last one to make a short direct successful attack from the field edge.

8-9 - I cut over on bearing and down the next ski trail more to the right to get near the bottom of the spur. I cut in a little early to be above the control, but spiked it.

9-10 - I went a little left of straight to avoid rocks and steep descent. The control at the bottom of 2 ski trails was easy.

10-11 - I started running faster on the downhill and a little more carefree. Others were running the same direction and elephant trails were starting to form. Again with the control at the bottom of 2 ski trails it was a little too easy.

11-12 - I left the control to the left and had to cut back to the right. I accelerated to make up for it, by going to the bottom and then over. Others ahead gave me motivation to catch up.

12-F - I pushed it in but lost a little time punching.

Washintgon, D.C. I did a new extended version of what I've call the Memorial Tour from my office (From 12th St., SW and Independence Ave. SW, to Main Ave. SW., to Ohio Dr., past the Tidal Basin, and Jefferson Memorial, over 14th St. Bridge to the Mt. Vernon Trail, around Lady Bird Johnson Memorial looping under the George Washington Pkwy., to the footbridge over the Boundary Channel into Virginia, along the North Pentagon Parking lot, to the trail along S. Washington Blvd., to the Mount Vernon Trail, to Memorial Bridge, clockwise more than half way around the Lincoln Memorial Circle. to the Reflecting Pool, past the World War II Memorial., along Independence Ave. past the Washington Monument, to 12th St.). It was around 63 F and very comfortable. There were lots of cyclists out. The Memorial Bridge was still being worked on with the south side of it closed off from auto and foot traffic. I was surprised at my pace and chalk it up to not having done much training lately--being well rested.
