Orienteering race 25:03 [3] 1.7 km (14:44 / km) +60m 12:31 / km

Sprint B final, Praia da Vieira map. Very interesting course, starting in woods, transitioning to sand dunes, and then to small streets. Horrible run though, just going too fast and not paying attention. Lost at least 6 minutes on one controls.

Event: WCOC BBQ, Sprints, Meeting at DeWeese Farm

Orienteering race 22:02 [3] 2.0 km (11:01 / km) +40m 10:01 / km

Sprint Qualifier in Leiria. Wonderful venue, starting high on a hill in an 11th century castle then going downhill through small streets and alleys. Have 2 1-minute mistakes plus a few 10 second mistakes, which put me out of the running for the A final. If I hadn't had those, I might have just barely qualified.

Event: WMOC 2008

Orienteering 2:00:00 [1]

Mostly walking model 1 (same map as warmup) and model 2 (Marinha Grande model for sprints). Then gathered with other USA attendees (Brautigams, Dick and Nancy Neuberger, Marsha, Rosemary, Sharon Crawford) for parade and opening ceremony.

Orienteering race 1:46:16 [4] 8.9 km (11:56 / km) +270m 10:22 / km

Warm-up race at WMOC. Thought we had signed up for a 7 k race but it turned out to be 9 k--a bit longer than I wanted. A number of small (30 sec to 1 min) mistakes but nothing major. Ran out of gas though after about 5 k and there was almost no water on the course, which was tough in 90 degree plus heat. Terrain very reminiscent of the French terrain from last year but the woods were less runnable in some areas.

Run with Rick to Steve and Laura's to water plant, then downtown to vote by absentee ballot, and then back home. Trying to get some exercise before we have to sit on the plane for hours.

Event: WCOC Crandalls Park

Orienteering race 22:29 [3] 2.2 km (10:13 / km)

Crandall's Park, sprint A

Wasn't real happy with this run but after butchering the Red, this one didn't look so bad. Lost a minute or two on 4, veering far left and hit the trail. I was working off a compass bearing, hit a stream and thought it was the one to the right of the cliff (when it was actually the one to the left) and so then veered even farther left. The incorrect n/s lines probably helped. Lost about half a minute on 5, was a litte high in the re-entrant.

Lost lots of time on 1 and 14 with a few more bobbles along the way. Maybe I should do the advanced courses before the sprint...
