Sam Nail ranch

Ruins of an old homestead, mainly one functioning windmill and one defunct. Lots of trees and plants not found elsewhere due to the windmill and attached well.

Note

Drove the 30 mile Ross Maxwell scenic road, visiting sites along the way. Stopped at the Castalon historic area, Homer Wilson ranch and Mule ears view in addition to the short hikes. Very hot day in the desert with temps in the 90's. Big different between the desert and the mtns where we've been hiking.

Got great pulled pork sandwiches from a food truck in Terlingua

Big Bend

South Rim via Laguna Meadow trail and down Boot Canyon and Pinnacles trail. Easier than we'd expected given the descriptions and that it's way more distance than we've done in a long time. Pretty gentle climb to the rim. The steep downhill on the Pinnacles trail got a bit tedious at the end though. Beautiful views on the rim and on the way up and back, changing frequently. Temps nice and in the 80s.

Big Bend National park

Lost Mine trail in the Chisos mountains. Fairly steep climb to a summit with nice views of the surrounding mtns and desert. Temps warm but comfortable, about 80 but with nice breeze.

Note

Arrived at our lofthouse in Terlingua at about 10 pm Sunday night. This was another terrific find thru Air BnB. It's a renovated miners cabin with a front and back outdoor eating area. Full of character and really nice.

Note

Horrendous travel experience getting to Big Bend.

We were supposed to fly LGA to Dallas, then to Midland on Saturday, then rent a car on Sunday am and drive 4-5 hours to our "house," stopping at a Fort Davis along the way and arriving mid afternoon. We didn't get into Midland until Sunday about 4 pm and even then only one piece of luggage had arrived (on a previous flight) and we had to wait another half hour or so for the other bag to arrive. We didn't get to our house until about 10 pm. So we ended up losing most of a day and had 2 very stressful days of travel. We both agreed it was the worst travel experience we've had.

This was all a result of a large storm system that went thru Texas and a ways north on Saturday, which included thunderstorms and tornadoes. Many flights were cancelled and delayed so Dallas was a mess. Our flight from LGA to Dallas was supposed to be a bit over 4 hours but it took 8 hours. We sat on the runway in NY for over 90 min while they decided what route we should take to go around the storm. Then sat 2 hours on the runway once we got to Dallas because the airport had no open gates for any of the arriving planes. Then sat over an hour at the gate waiting for someone to extend the jet bridge to the plane--no staff!

Green course at Tarrywile, set by Tony Muffatti

Very physical course given the little that I've run lately with a lot of side hills and steep ups and downs. Pretty sloppy map reading as well. Some interesting legs and locations we've not done before/recently. And perfect weather.
