Orienteering race 59:01 [4] *** 5.5 km (10:44 / km) +235m 8:50 / km
spiked:7/9c

Chasing the Star DVOA meet, "long" course, green y

Surprising amount of trail and road running so the controls weren't that difficult. Lost a minute at 5, looking for the pit in the rocky ground to the east. Lost another 1/2 minute or so going a little low at 6. Lost another 1/2 minute going to 9, veered a bit west although that may have been fine because it avoided the green. Garmin says 6.32.

Orienteering race 45:33 [3] 3.3 km (13:48 / km) +135m 11:28 / km

Chasing the Star DVOA A meet, middle distance, green y

Very nice, challenging course set by Sandy. Lost 3 minutes on 1, probably 1 minute each on 2 and 3, and then another minute on 12 with a too careful route choice to the stone wall. Even with the mistakes, I was pretty happy. I could have been so much worse in the subtle, green terrain. Garmin says 3.98.

Orienteering race 24:22 [3] 2.54 km (9:36 / km) +55m 8:39 / km

Chasing the Star DVOA A meet, sprint course, BrGrOr

Really fun course. It's so rare to do an urban course. Didn't make significant mistakes but went more slowly than I normally would on a sprint (especially a downhill road sprint) because it seemed like it would be very easy to lose time if I lost contact.

Hashing 1:00:00 [3] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Set by Joe around Saugutuck Reservoir. He set the trails too close together so a bunch of us accidentally shortcut a good bit.

Orienteering 45:00 [1] 1.5 mi (30:00 / mi)

Hanging controls for boyscout camporee at Hoyt

Orienteering race 2:02:00 [4] 7.7 km (15:51 / km)

Red course at Huntington, set by Peter Polivka. Really fun course, entirely on the northwest side of the map. Very different from most courses we've done there. Lost a lot of time on 10 and 25 and smaller amounts on a number of others so I wasn't happy with the run. Garmin says 10.2 k

Orienteering 30:00 [1] 2.0 km (15:00 / km)

Picking up controls

Orienteering race 1:46:00 [3] 7.6 km (13:57 / km) +170m 12:33 / km

Ansonia meet, red course, set by Peter Grollman

Really fun course and such a pleasure to run on a nice map, without a ton of climb or green. My orienteering was pretty sloppy though, starting off with a big mistake going to 3 and then lots of smaller ones throughout. Garmin says 10.32 k.

Tried the OGPS program and it was really fun to watch our tracks throughout the course.

Orienteering race 1:40:47 [3] 5.72 km (17:37 / km) +235m 14:37 / km

West Pt A meet Day 2, green Y, classic distance

Not nearly as clean as yesterday. Just wasn't reading the map and seeing the terrain as well. A minute or two lost on 1, over 10 minutes on 3, a minute on 5, and plenty of hesitations on a few others. Could have been worse (and has often been at West Pt).

Saturday May 3, 2008 #

Orienteering race 54:32 [3] 3.81 km (14:19 / km) +155m 11:54 / km

West Pt A meet, Day 1, middle distance on the green y course

No significant mistakes but painfully slow with the wet, rocky terrain and technical areas. There was so much that I couldn't run through that I didn't feel very tired at the end. Lost 30-60 seconds on a number of controls due to hesitations but nothing major.

Orienteering race 22:17 [4] 2.5 km (8:55 / km) +60m 7:57 / km

West Pt A meet, day 1 sprint course on O/BR/GR course.

Another good run. Lost almost 2 minutes going to 3 because I helped a guy get untangled in the concertina wire (it was very close to #3 and very long; streamered in a few places but not along the entire length). Again, lost 15 seconds here and there with hesitations but nothing else significant. Really run course. I enjoyed all the courses this weekend--the cadets did a terrific job.
