Running race 11:27 [4] 1.4 mi (8:11 / mi)

Bethel Parks and Rec X-C race. Started in front of the HS, did 2 laps around grassy area.

Running race (Roads) 1:10:34 [4] 8.0 mi (8:49 / mi)

New Milford 8 miler with Kim. Hilly course, with mile splits ranging from 7:53 to 10:53 depending on how much uphill or downhill. Hot and humid but not too bad. The race was in conjunction with the New Milford festival so the whole town green had vendors. Nice race with a band along the way, a lone violinist, water every mile. Went to Bethel farmers' market after.

Hashing 1:29:00 [3] 6.93 mi (12:51 / mi)

Set by Geoff in Pound Ridge. Such a beautiful park. It's a shame they don't allow Oing there anymore.

Running intervals (Track) 20:00 [3] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Intervals at the track with Rick.

1/2 laps: 44, 42, 42, 42, 42, 45; full lap: 1:42

Orienteering 1:13:00 [2] 5.7 km (12:48 / km)

Training at huntington. I tried drawing a long line-O course and then following it as best I could while wearing the garmin. Then I used OGPS to compare my tracks to the line-O to see how accurate I was. The tracks on OGPS weren't quite accurate enough for this terrain and exercise. I was trying to be very precise, going on specific sides of boulders and spurs, of which there are many in Huntington.

Orienteering long 6:00:00 [2]

Second part of CNYO rogaine.

Took a long (1 hour?) break at water stop 17 at around 2. Was doing okay with the night controls up until then but we were in a bad area to be doing night controls. Decided to try the relatively easy ones to finish the night (38, 71, 57), be at 15 at around 6 am and then do as many of the SW ones as possible to finish. Had some trouble with 38 (the trails didn't seem to be mapped correctly relative to the stream) then had tons of trouble with 71. Never ended up finding it. I suspect we would have had much better success in the daylight. Anyway, we decided we'd had enough and come back in at about 7 am. So we really got about all out points by 2 am.

In hindsight, it probably would have been better to tackle yellow barn in the night (maybe the NE and then yellow barn) because it wasn't that green, had shorter control distances, and better attackpoints. As often happens with rogaines, I was frustrated by the indefinite nature of some of the control placements, attackpoints that didn't seem to be mapped correctly, and the amount of green in the woods. But I know this is just the way rogaines are so maybe it's not the sport for me. If we do one again, we have to make sure we're in relatively easy areas at night and consider just sleeping for a few hours. If we're in shape for it, it may be more enjoyable to jog for some of it, which we didn't do at all this time, and rest more at night.

Orienteering long 11:15:00 [2]

First half of CNYO rogaine with Rick. Did 21, 41, then yellow barn area and then central east section, ending daylight around 27 and midnight at about 49. Took a 15 minute break at 10 water stop and 30 minutes at 55. Rick ran out of water at about 55 but I still had some to share. We decided to head south and get water in the creak near 27 using our water filter. Decided to skip the eastern controls because of the long distance and climb back up and we knew we wouldn't get them all anyway. We would have done it if we would end up there at night but we were too early.

Physically, I was feeling really good and had no feet problems (probably thanks to larger sized Salamons). Surprising because I haven't done anything longer than about 2 hours all year. We lost some time at 68 and on the way to 10 but doing pretty well other than that. Yellow Barn wasn't as green as we had expected it to be, probably because of the control placement. By the time we got to the creek, which was really low, at 27, Rick was pretty dehydrated and cranky.

Running 24:10 [3] 2.45 mi (9:52 / mi)

Running to school with Rick to do a track workout. Didn't get out as early as we intended so the heat was pretty intense.

Running intervals (Track) 30:00 [4] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

Walked for 1/2 lap and then ran 1/2: :46, 44, 43, 46, 47, 45

Running 27:37 [3] 2.34 mi (11:48 / mi)

Run back from school (with a little walking on the steepest hill).

Hiking 1:30:00 [1]

Walking around Lisbon. Found a nice park to walk through and then around the city center.

Orienteering race 1:11:24 [4] 5.1 km (14:00 / km) +150m 12:12 / km

Long Final, B division, Pedrogao map. Very different terrain than the qualification race, with much more vegetation so less runnable, some areas of vague, subtle contours, other areas of highly detailed contours. This was my worst run all week--about 14 minutes of errors. I was actually reading the map okay but just wasn't prepared for the subtlies and so wasn't being careful enough about the possibility of parallel errors, etc. My placement in the B group actually wasn't that bad because I think lots of people were making mistakes.

Orienteering race 1:16:34 [3] 7.2 km (10:38 / km) +150m 9:38 / km

Open Race 2, Pataias map again. Tried to take it easy so I wouldn't be overly tired for Saturday (although I'm finding that the lower climb numbers and more open terrain is making me less tired that running at home). Lost a couple of minutes to poor map reading. Also lost 3 minutes compared to Rick on a long leg even though I didnt really have navigation problems--just slower route choice and lots of hesitations.

Orienteering race 53:25 [4] 5.4 km (9:54 / km) +140m 8:45 / km

Long qualifier 2, Pataias map again. Same mix of terrain as yesterday. Had 3-4 minutes of mistakes but that was probably less than yesterday. Can't read this map as well as Tuesday's map.

Even though my time was better than yesterday's, it only gained me about a single place, not nearly good enough to qualify for the A finals. In my heat, heat 1, I wouldn't have qualified even if I had subtracted my time from errors. I notice that in heat 2, my time would have allowed me to qualify. The courses were different but supposed to be the same length and difficulty. Not sure if heat 2 courses were actually more difficult or the competition just happened to be tougher in heat 1.

Orienteering race 59:07 [4] 5.4 km (10:57 / km) +155m 9:34 / km

Long qualifier 1, Pataias map. Mix of areas of rich contour detail and areas of major hills/depressions; pretty runnable although many trails were sandy and difficult to run on. Not a great run. Got confused on an area of trail network and lost a few minutes (didn't have a clear plan for the route) and had a number of other smaller mistakes.

Orienteering race 1:11:23 [3] 7.0 km (10:12 / km) +105m 9:29 / km

Open Race 1, Praia da Vieira map (same name as sprint final course but not the same part of the map--this was all woods). I loved this map and terrain.;, incredibly open, runnable woods, lots of contour details but I was actually able to read them well. Wish they had used this map for one of the championship races. Had just a few small mistakes.
