Hiking 1:50:00 [1] 3.45 mi (31:53 / mi)

Walking around Camp Mattatuck, a scout camp in Plymoth, CT, with Rick, George and Lyn to check it out for possible mapping. Looks promising. Some thick woods but much of it not bad for this time year. Not too hilly in the area the scouts own. Excellent facilities, parking, cabins, lake, etc.

Orienteering race 53:02 [4] 6.46 km (8:13 / km) +155m 7:20 / km

Laramie, US Champs, day 2, Remarkable Flats map, GreenY

Good run with no more than a minute or two of mistakes through hesitations. Less technical than Saturday, fewer hills and lots of open fields. Tried to jog as often as I could but slow enough to stay in good contact.

Saturday Aug 9, 2008 #

Orienteering race 1:16:00 [4] 5.8 km (13:06 / km) +160m 11:31 / km

US champs day 1, Diamond Bay map in Laramie, GreenY, F40

2 big mistakes: 8 minutes on 4 and 12 on 9. Poor map reading and attackpoint on 4 and poor relocation on 9. Everything else was almost perfect but those two errors were so big ...

Friday Aug 8, 2008 #

Orienteering race (Sprint) 19:22 [3] 2.5 km (7:45 / km)

Laramie Daze, friday sprint, East Pelican Bay map

Lost 1 minute going to 2 (went to 3 first).

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1]

Walked to about 1/2 the controls on the red course, treating it like a model map for the weeken.

Thursday Aug 7, 2008 #

Orienteering race 1:27:26 [3] 6.3 km (13:53 / km)

Laramie Daze, green course, Happy jack map

Lost some time on 3 and 18. Need to as careful on the last control as the first control. I often miss a final easy control because I'm just ready to be done.

Wednesday Aug 6, 2008 #

Orienteering race 54:27 [4] 6.2 km (8:47 / km)

Laramie Daze, one-person relay, Jubil E. map

Did loops 1, 2, 3, and 4 in that order. Ended up with the same order as Rick so since we tend to travel at similar speeds, saw him much of the time even though we often had slightly different routes (till he did a 180 starting loop 4 and lost 3-4 minutes). Also saw Mike Minium most of the way until he had to get something out of his shoe at the end of the 3rd loop.

Really fun course, with mass start and everyone going in various directions. Had a few hesitations but didn't lost a lot of time. Walked all up hills and some flats but could still run a fair amount.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [2] 5.6 km (16:04 / km)

Laramie afternoon training, Bisbee Hill map

Walked the course. Lost a little time on 5, 8, 9, 10. Tried not using the compass much or doing much pacing to focus on map reading.

Tuesday Aug 5, 2008 #

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] 4.5 km (13:20 / km)

Laramie Daze, afternoon training on Plains of Despair

Rick and I just got in, after flying into Denver and driving up, and decided to try to get out lungs used to the altitude as fast as possible. Did about 1/2 of the training course.

Sunday Aug 3, 2008 #

Orienteering race 2:04:00 [4] 7.6 km (16:19 / km)

Cle Elem day 2, red course

A number of small to medium mistakes today. Not a good run. Probably the big lesson of the weekend was needing to relocate faster. I spent a lot of time making a guess about where I was and then proceeding based on that only to find out I was wrong. Once I had solid relocation points, I was fine.

Saturday Aug 2, 2008 #

Orienteering race 2:22:00 [4] 9.4 km (15:06 / km) +350m 12:44 / km

Cle Elem day 1, Cle Elem Ridge map, red course

Thought I was doing a 6.3 k course but it turned out to be 9.4--way too long for my conditioning. Having the starts an hour late and no food didn't help. One huge blowup on 7 and a few other smaller mistakes.

Friday Aug 1, 2008 #

Orienteering race (Sprint) 20:00 [4] 2.8 km (7:09 / km)

Cle Elem sprint; some hesitations but no real problems.

Orienteering 1:08:00 [1]

Street scramble in Cle Elem with Rick's mom, Linda, Terry, and Frank, and Charlene. Lots of fun. Did well until end when we had trouble crossing a creek and getting up a steep ravine and had to go way around on the roads so ended up 8 minutes late and lost lots of points.
