Hiking 7:30:00 [3] 15.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Grand Falls hut to our car on Rt 201. Trail was a bit overgrown in places. It went along the Dead River but was high enough off the river that we couldn't see or hear it for most of the way. Fair amount of mosquitoes, black flies. The trail is mostly the remnant of an old road. Lots of rolling hills.

Hiking 5:00:00 [2] 12.5 mi (24:00 / mi)

Flagstaff hut to Grand Falls hut. The prettiest hike and our favorite hut. Most of the day was along the Dead River then came to a large foot bridge over the river, which had great views. Finally came Grand Falls themselves which are much more impressive than we expected. The hut is the most remote and has the best views. Had it to ourselves again. Pork, bean and veggie tortillas (homemade tortillas), eggs and biscuits for bkfst, bean salad sandwich and pulled pork sandwiches for lunch.

Hiking 5:00:00 [2] 10.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Poplar hut to Flagstaff hut. Lots of changing vegetation and trail conditions. A few miles next to a marshy area, then hopped over to the AT for a few miles. Everyone we ran into on the AT was talking about the hiker who had been missing for about 5 days at that point. Views along Flagstaff Lake were beautiful. The hut is very close to the lake and there's a dock with canoes available. About 10 others staying at the hut. Staff not as friendly at this one and food only average. Meatloaf for dinner, eggs with burnt bacon for breakfast, and humus sandwiches for lunch.
4 PM

Hiking 30:00 [1] 1.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Hiked to a small peninsula before and after dinner where loons reside. Rick did some fishing.

Hiking 5:00:00 [2] 10.2 mi (29:25 / mi) +200m 27:43 / mi

Stratton Brook hut to Poplar Stream hut. Back down Newton's Revenge trail and then along rail trail for about 4 miles, then nice woods trails up to hut. Roasted chicken for dinner, blueberry pancakes for breakfast, chicken salad sandwiches for lunch. We were the only ones staying at the hut.

Driving to B, west forks trailhead, where we'll be shuttled to A, Stratton Brook and rt 27 TH. Overnight at Stratton Brook hut.

Hiking 1:30:00 [2] 3.0 mi (30:00 / mi) +100m 27:11 / mi

After getting shuttled from B to A, hike from Stratton Brook/Rt 27 trailhead to Stratton Brook hut. Via Newton's revenge trail. Half the way was on a big logging road with poor trail conditions and scenery. Trail up to the hut was fine and the hut itself was great. Spinach lasagna for dinner, eggs for breakfast, and homemade falafel wraps with veggies for bagged lunch. Only two other people staying at the hut. Great view of Bigelow range from outlook near the hut.
4 PM

Hiking 45:00 [1] 2.0 mi (22:30 / mi)

Hike to two nearby waterfalls with swimming holes. Too cold for swimming but Rick did some fishing.
