| Long Final, B division, Pedrogao map. Very different terrain than the qualification race, with much more vegetation so less runnable, some areas of vague, subtle contours, other areas of highly detailed contours. This was my worst run all week--about 14 minutes of errors. I was actually reading the map okay but just wasn't prepared for the subtlies and so wasn't being careful enough about the possibility of parallel errors, etc. My placement in the B group actually wasn't that bad because I think lots of people were making mistakes. |

| Open Race 2, Pataias map again. Tried to take it easy so I wouldn't be overly tired for Saturday (although I'm finding that the lower climb numbers and more open terrain is making me less tired that running at home). Lost a couple of minutes to poor map reading. Also lost 3 minutes compared to Rick on a long leg even though I didnt really have navigation problems--just slower route choice and lots of hesitations. |

| Long qualifier 2, Pataias map again. Same mix of terrain as yesterday. Had 3-4 minutes of mistakes but that was probably less than yesterday. Can't read this map as well as Tuesday's map.
Even though my time was better than yesterday's, it only gained me about a single place, not nearly good enough to qualify for the A finals. In my heat, heat 1, I wouldn't have qualified even if I had subtracted my time from errors. I notice that in heat 2, my time would have allowed me to qualify. The courses were different but supposed to be the same length and difficulty. Not sure if heat 2 courses were actually more difficult or the competition just happened to be tougher in heat 1. |

| Long qualifier 1, Pataias map. Mix of areas of rich contour detail and areas of major hills/depressions; pretty runnable although many trails were sandy and difficult to run on. Not a great run. Got confused on an area of trail network and lost a few minutes (didn't have a clear plan for the route) and had a number of other smaller mistakes. |

| Open Race 1, Praia da Vieira map (same name as sprint final course but not the same part of the map--this was all woods). I loved this map and terrain.;, incredibly open, runnable woods, lots of contour details but I was actually able to read them well. Wish they had used this map for one of the championship races. Had just a few small mistakes. |

| Sprint B final, Praia da Vieira map. Very interesting course, starting in woods, transitioning to sand dunes, and then to small streets. Horrible run though, just going too fast and not paying attention. Lost at least 6 minutes on one controls. |

| Sprint Qualifier in Leiria. Wonderful venue, starting high on a hill in an 11th century castle then going downhill through small streets and alleys. Have 2 1-minute mistakes plus a few 10 second mistakes, which put me out of the running for the A final. If I hadn't had those, I might have just barely qualified. |
