Hiking 7:30:00 [4] 10.5 mi (42:51 / mi) +1500m 29:41 / mi

Day 3 in the Whites. Mizpah Spring Hut to Mt Washington to Pinkham Notch. Took the Crawford Trail over Mt Pierce and then Mt. Eisenhower. It was rainy and overcast with wind when we started but we could still see for some distance and had decent views. The wind really kicked up on Mt. E though and it was tough to maintain balance. Took the by-pass around Mt. Monroe to avoid the worst of the wind then went to Lake of the Clouds hut. The others had lunch because they planned to take the shuttle down from Mt. W, which was only another 1.5 miles. Rick and I mushed on. The hike to the summit wasn't bad; some rocky ground that was made a little more tricky with the wind and rain but not bad. The summit had high winds and pelting rain. No visibility here but we did get some nice views of the summit from just below. Got a pick pic of each of us at the summit sign and then had lunch at the station. Took the Lion's Head trail down to Tuckerman's Ravine trail. The first two miles down were very tough, especially because my downhill muscles were already sore from yesterday. Some similiarly steep downhill stretches amongst large rocks. When we finally joined up with Tuckerman, the trail widened into a huge trail about the width of two roads. Nice views of Chrystal cascades at the bottom. Fun weekend but now have some outstandingly sore muscles.

Hiking 5:00:00 [4] 6.0 mi (50:00 / mi) +600m 38:09 / mi

Day 2, first hike. Carter Notch Hut to Pinkham Notch Lodge via the Wildcats on the AT. We had expected to do this easily in 4 hours with really steep first mile, then a walk along a ridge and a steep but moderate downhill to the lodge. The first steep uphill was as expected with great views of the hut from Wildcat A. The path from A to E had much more ups and downs than we expected (our 100 foot contour map doesn't give that much detail) and it was raining so the rocks and roots were slick. Then the 2 mile downhill from Wildcat E was almost vertical, with pinned steps up the sides of cliff faces. My downhill leg muscles and arms (from grabbing rocks and trees) were very tired by the end. Kelley and Sue took the ski lift from Wildcat D to Rt 16 near Pinkham.

Hiking 1:20:00 [3] 2.6 mi (30:46 / mi) +600m 17:55 / mi

Day 2 in the Whites, second hike. After getting the cars from Carter Notch Road, leaving one at Pinkham, and driving around to the Highland Center, we hiked from the HIghland Center to Mizpah Spring Hut via the Crawford Trail and Mizpah Cutoff. Nice steady climb with reasonable trail. Hut was one large building (unlike Carter which had several buildings). Kelley and Sue negotiated a separate room for us which was great because we needed to hang out all our wet clothes. Another good dinner with stuffed shells, hm bread, pumpkin curry soup, salad. Pancakes and oatmeal and bacon for breakfast.
