Running race (Hume & Hovell 22km) 2:42:22 [5] 22.26 km (7:18 / km) +696m 6:19 / km
ahr:167 max:204 shoes: Mizuno Wave Kazan trail

2nd attempt at this race after cramping badly in the last 3km last year. Ran conservatively for the 6km along the fire trail, saving energy for the climbs. Ran all the way up the open field to the base of Mt Garland with dry ground this year making is so much easier!

Walked the first 500m of the steep climb up Mt Garland then alternated between running and walking as the climb varied. Hit the 9km checkpoint to loud music and a Happy Birthday sign (turned 60 today!) from Izzi! Took on some gatorade, fruit cake and lollies. Next 4km were a mix of run and walk, passing some other runners before I got to the big downhill to Tumbarumba Creek. Bernadette and another lady raced past me on the downhill as I was again conservative and they were soon out of sight. Got to the swing bridge at the bottom and was surprised to see them both plus Sarah.

Got past the other lady and the remaining 3 of us stayed pretty much together up the tough climb along Burra Creek. After a couple of k's, Bern had a tumble but was OK and we kept going until she stopped to talk to her husband Stephen coming the other way (he was sweeping the 50km run). Sarah and I stayed together but she eventually let me past and I pulled clear until I got to the road crossing where I got lost last year and I was confused again! Sarah soon arrived and pointed out the right route and I quickly got away again.

Ran the last 2km conservatively, still wary of cramping but the Shotz in the racepack did the job. Slowed also by a sore right Achilles but had no real problems and finished more than 17 minutes faster than last year. Deb, in her first ever half mara, ran a brilliant time of just under 3 hours whilst Briohny had an outstanding run in a big field to place 2nd female behind the speedy Shannon Jones in 2:26, 9 minutes faster than last year.

Really happy with the new Garmin 235 however I think the HRM is way off as I don't think there is any way I averaged 167 and maxed at 204, especially since my pacemaker has a hardwired upper limit of 145!!!

Long course at Pommy. Pleased with running capacity and only one nav error, on 4, which I missed to the left at the end of a longish leg.

Orienteering (Control collection) 1:23:11 [3] *** 6.7 km (12:25 / km) +198m 10:49 / km
ahr:134 max:175 shoes: Merrell Fuse Trail

Helped Deb with control collection after the event today.

Covered over 17 km with about 400m climb across the 3 activities today, so a good hit out ahead of the Hume and Hovell 22 km race next Saturday.
