Wednesday Nov 30 | ||
| roller ski 52:30 [3]13 km (4:02 / km) | ||
| playing with the new boots. they feel really loose in the binding, so that the notches in the heal don't line up right with the ridges in the healplate. between this and the lopsided poles (using a shorter heavier old one to replace the broken one) I was having quite a bit of trouble with the balance this morning. | ||
Tuesday Nov 29 | ||
| soccer 1:00:00 [3] | ||
Sunday Nov 27 | ||
| skate ski 1:00:00 [3]5 km (12:00 / km) | ||
| playing around in the fields at Daddyo's house. mounted a pair of his old NNN bindings on a pair of his even older skis, but that only lasted a bit before the screws ripped out and the binding fell off. really I was just letting him get in a few extra km before next week, so he isn't shamed too much when the real sking hits. | ||

Sunday Nov 20 | ||
| roller ski 1:21:00 [3]13.8 km (5:52 / km) | ||
| up Mt Hollywood drive in Griffith park. Closed to car traffic, so it was pretty nice. Some long crazy steep hills though, so it was slow going on the downhills. Really hot in the sun. | ||
Friday Nov 18 | ||
| run 33:44 [3]4.2 mi (8:01 / mi) | ||
| so I think this constitutes the full extent of my training for Manchester next week. well, this and the turkey sandwich I had at the pub for lunch. | ||

Thursday Nov 17 | ||
| roller ski 1:03:00 [3]9.7 km (6:30 / km) | ||
| Kevin couldn't make it yesterday but still wanted to get out this week, so who am I to turn down a chance to get up at 5am? We went up exploring the rich kid's neighborhood on Amalfi, great roads, great views, no traffic at all. A couple crazy steep hills, but nothing unmanageable between the speed reducers and the brake. Pretty slow because of the hills.
For those of you keeping track (dad), this brings it up to a nice round 252.5 km for the fall. You better hope you get a lot of wet-leaf skiing in before colorado...

| run 25:00 [3]3 km (8:20 / km) | ||
| jog to the start | ||
| orienteering 1:23:00 [3]6 km (13:50 / km) | ||
| LAOC Firestone. got stuck in some super thick green a few times to lose 5+ minutes (each) on three consecutive legs. a little frustrating, since the map was pretty inconsistent. route choice for most was either the double-length long way around on the trail, or the straight line route that had a 25% chance of being unmapped thicket. but the nice parts of the map are really nice, so it really wasn't too bad of a day. | ||
Saturday Nov 12 | ||
| hiking 2:00:00 [3]13.0 mi (9:13 / mi) +1000m 4:38 / km | ||
| Hiked Mt Baden-Powell (9k') and Mt Burnham (8500') in the San Gabriels. Great day, clear and sunny. Temps on the north sides were in the 40's, on the south sides in the 70's. An inch or two of snow on the north sides above about 8k, but the trail was mostly clear. photos. | ||

Saturday Nov 5 | ||
| wrestling 1:00:00 [3] | ||
| gee haven't done this in a while. back at mit for the 1st annual alumni wrestling meet. It actually went pretty well, we had 15 or so alums back from all kinds of weight classes, so we just went with a normal meet format against the undergrad team. happy to say we destroyed them. I guess we get cranky with age. by far the best was a glorious beatdown given by an alum from '73, they never saw it coming.
I had two matches, one against the undergrad guy, who I beat pretty good about 13-2, and then one against my old training partner (now an alum - and about 300lbs) that I lost 2-1. He had lost all his endurance and I had lost all my strength, so it was actually kind of even.

Wednesday Nov 2 | ||
| run 32:54 [3]4.2 mi (7:49 / mi) | ||
| ahr:157 | ||
| felt pretty crappy. not sure if I'm a little sick or just haven't run in a while.
there was a big protest going on in town at the federal building, and riding the bike home from work through the park I got stopped and redirected by a dozen guys in black unmarked vans who were "taking care of something" [their words] up ahead. either bomb squad or a random beating, I couldn't really tell.
