road bike 6:19:00 [3]101.1 mi (3:45 / mi)
LA Wheelmen fall century ride with Chris from work. Pretty fun ride, very windy in the morning, then hot in the afternoon. Chris did pretty good considering this was his first ride longer than 30 miles. Route started in Malibu, went out PCH, did some random loops around Oxnard (crossing every train track at least 6 times), then back down PCH.

C • So did you beat the 8-yr olds?... 3
run 45:00 [2]

hiking 4:00:00 [3]28.2 mi (8:30 / mi) +2800m 4:02 / km
Theres a hike in the San Gorgonio range called the 9-peaks traverse, which has roughly the same reputation and badasstitude as the Presi Traverse in the whites. You basically climb 5000 ft straight up from the parking lot, then go along the ridge knocking off all the peaks (while picking up another 4000ft of climb), then destroy your knees on the 6000ft descent. But there's actually 10 peaks on the ridge, everyone just always skips one (Dobbs), because its a few hundred extra feet down. Thats not fair, so I hit that one as well. A bit over 28 miles, 9200' of climb, 14 hours, 13 liters of water. Not too many good pictures, as everything in SoCal always just look brown. Saw a forest fire start up a couple ridges over. map and photos

so it actually rained this morning. not real rain that would pass as rain in any other part of the country, but there was definitely water falling from the sky. thats two months ahead of schedule...

roller ski 1:01:00 [3]16.1 km (3:47 / km)
5:48, 5:24, 5:10, 5:34, 5:38
found a hairline crack in the back of the frame on the right ski (by the brake). not bad enough to make anything fall off yet, but I suppose I should replace the frames before the winter rolls around. Its been squeeking for a little while, I guess thats why.

Sunday Sep 10

hiking 4:00:00 [3]18.0 mi (13:19 / mi)
Dayhike from Mineral King in Sequoia. On the trail through a high grass valley up to Farewell Gap, then up some crappy softball sized scree to Vandever Mt (windy), back down and across more crappy scree to Bullfrog Lakes (in the right notch), up the west ridge of Florence (refrigerator sized scree), down the other side to Franklin Pass, and back down the trail. Sunny but cold, I did most of it in a pile jacket. Saw a million marmot, a zillion deer, a pair of coyotes, parts of a plane?, and had this guy pop his head out about 15 feet from the trail. about 12 hours car to car. map and photos.

Monday Sep 4

run race 1:52:20 [4]8.0 mi (14:01 / mi) +1300m 5:48 / km
Mt Baldy Trail Race. 8 miles, starts at 6000', ends at 10000'. Results aren't up yet, but by my watch I beat last year by 30 seconds. Got really bad stomach cramps around 9000', and hiked most of the last 3 miles. Not that I could have run much faster at that altitude anyway.
run 1:00:00 [2]4.0 mi (14:59 / mi)
slow jog from the summit back down to the top of the ski lift.

Sunday Sep 3

hiking 4:00:00 [3]16.0 mi (14:59 / mi)
Dayhiked Mt Silliman in Sequoia. Here's the guided photo tour (map): From Lodgepole, hiked two miles up the trail, then two miles up a creek, then 2000 vertical feet of calf-burning friction slab, then a few lakes, a snowfield or two, and the summit. Tried a few places on the north side to get down off the ridge to make it a loop, but almost the entire side was vertical. Tried the north east side first, then two chutes on the north west ridge. The first chute looked promising and I got about 50 feet down before I got sketched out and climbed back up. Found another one down a little further that had more holds and less dirt. Here are both chutes from the bottom, the first was in the notch to the left, the second is on the very right edge. After that I dropped down 1000' of nice solid slab to Little Lakes, up over a nice open saddle and down some more slab to connect with the trail coming down from Silliman Pass. Then a long slog back to the car on the trail. about 12 hours car to car. photos
