Sunday Jan 30

skate ski (skate) 3:57:00 [3] 40.3 km (5:53 / km)
things froze up pretty nicely overnight (it was 10* when I got there), so most of the trails were solid enough to skate lightly. a few of the smaller (but longer and more fun) ones could have used a few more (as in more than one) passes with a heavy groomer.
skate ski (skate) 30:00 [2] 5 km (6:00 / km)
a few more easy trails near the parking lot after lunch to loosen up a little before the drive home.

Saturday Jan 29

skate ski (skate) 1:44:00 [3] 17.7 km (5:53 / km)
skate ski (skate) 2:40:00 [3] 28 km (5:43 / km)
at tamarack. they got about a foot of fresh snow on friday, and it hadn't packed down too well yet, so the skating was delicate at best, impossible at worst.

Sunday Jan 23

ski-o 1:25:00 [3] 19.6 km (4:20 / km)
BAOC ski-o at Tahoe City XC
three loops: 8k, 6k, 6k. foggy and just below freezing all morning, so the snow was nice and fast. felt much better than I was expecting. made a few little mistakes and had one bushwhack leg that was probably 75m longer than it could have been, but otherwise it went pretty well. this is way more fun than normal orienteering.
skate ski 2:30:00 [3] 25 km (6:00 / km)
4k with Mikkel to go pick up a control, then I went exploring out to the far end of the trails. Got above the fog, so it was clear and sunny but the snow was still good. The plan was to do a loose 10k so I could get an early start on the drive home, but it was so nice I managed to talk myself out of turning around four or five times.

Saturday Jan 22

skate ski 1:10:00 [1] 10 km (7:00 / km)
2k warmup before. 8k roaming around the trails afterwards.
skate ski 1:01:57 [4] 15 km (4:08 / km)
Chimney Rock 15k skate race in Sequoia NP.
It didn't freeze overnight, and by the time it started at 10am, it was sunny and 60*. So the snow didn't stand a chance, it was all mashed potato consistency very quickly (fortunately there was 8 feet of it). And I had my wax wrong which made it tougher. Still ok though, 3rd in my age catagory, maybe 12th overall.

Friday Jan 21

road bike 56:00 [3] 14.8 mi (3:46 / mi)

Anza Borrego Day 2 Blue
Pretty beat after both races yesterday, and a good bit dehydrated from the sun (in the desert? who would have thought). We had a 1.5k leg in the middle that I messed up and, in a blatantly stupid parallel error, started searching for the control 400m too short. That involved a lot of extra hill climbing and pretty much wore me out. Unfortunately the last 3k of the course after that was all uphill, so that didn't go so fast either.

Maze-O
A 1:5000 map that was 50% totally impassable cliffs, slot canyons, and dirt walls, and the other 50% was slightly passable cliffs, slot canyons, and dirt walls. The actual terrain was much more rugged than it looks like on the map. Pretty fun. Got lost a bit.

orienteering 1:08:19 [4] 8 km (8:32 / km) +190m 7:38 / km
ahr:162 10c
Anza Borrego Day 1 Blue
Messed up #1 by a couple minutes because I had no idea what to expect from the map, so I wasn't reading it carefully enough. A few smaller mistakes later, probably 10 minutes total.
orienteering (night) 1:15:29 [4] 7.1 km (10:38 / km) +160m 9:33 / km
ahr:151 11c
Anza Borrego Night-O Blue
This actually went better than the daytime, because I knew the terrain type a little better and I was probably concentrating more. Trouble on one for maybe 8 minutes because it was the only control on the course without reflective tape on it, and since the controls are the color of the dirt at night, that makes it tough to find, especially when you're expecting it to reflect at you.

so I can understand how the rain is leaking in through the bedroom window, since its exposed and faces the windy side of the world. but how does water get in the living room window, considering its protected under the 6ft overhang of the balcony above me?

on a related note, there are some dodgy rumors that certain places up high in the sierras have gotten 19 feet of snow since christmas. not sure if this is true, but I've seen it in serveral different [unreliable] places. hello skiing in august.

Sunday Jan 9

Note
Tamarack 15k skate - canceled cause there is too much snow.
LAOC local meet - canceled cause there are too many mudslides.
Any attempt to go skiing or hiking or running or generally leave LA this weekend - canceled cause ALL the highways are closed.
this place sucks.
run 50:07 [2] 5.7 mi (8:47 / mi)
rain rain rain

Friday Jan 7

Note
so it doesn't look good for the race this weekend. its still raining here, and still snowing in the mountains, but too much. its snowing so fast that they can't groom the trails quick enough, so you can't skate on them, so they're probably going to cancel. which I guess is ok since all the roads to get there are closed. Tamarack is expecting 6-8 _feet_ of new accumulation this weekend.
run 18:00 [2] 2.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
in an absolute downpour. felt really twitchy after work so I needed to do something.
Note
24 hours of Telemark XC - teams of up to 6, who wants in?

Tuesday Jan 4

run 32:45 [3] 4.1 mi (7:59 / mi)
ahr:156
back in the ghetto. its been raining here nonstop for a week. some parts of LA have gotten more rain since christmas than they average in an entire year... fortunately this means craploads of snow for anything above 6k ft.

Saturday Jan 1

run 54:00 [3] 6.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
run through chester with the monkey squad
