Wednesday May 31

road bike 1:14:00 [3]21.0 mi (3:30 / mi)
felt pretty crappy last night so I slept in and went for an easy ride.
Note
so will this make the olympics before orienteering?

Tuesday May 30

road bike 1:33:30 [3]30.1 mi (3:06 / mi)

Sunday May 28

road bike 5:28:00 [3]100.3 mi (3:16 / mi)
Did the circumnavigate-the-Santa-Monica-mountain-range ride. Started off climbing up over Sepulveda pass, which wasn't as bad as I was expecting, just cold. Then down into the SF valley and west out along the north side of the mountains. Really nice roads once I got out past Calabasas. Rolling hills and open horse farms, a lot like northern Baltimore Co. Had a gusty headwind for most of it though. The last climb before dropping down the west side had an insane descent on it. Super steep down a windy canyon. Wasn't sure the the brakes would actually keep me slow enough to make the turns, and this was from a dead stop at the top. Survived that, then out into the farms around Camarillo and back along PCH (with a sweet tailwind - held 27 for about 10 miles). Route was roughly this, with less ocean swimming than may be implied. Turned out to be 98 miles, so I had to loop around a section at the end to push it over. 100 just sounds better.
C • Nice ride!
Been plotting loop...

Saturday May 27

road bike 2:17:15 [3]46.7 mi (2:57 / mi)
Felt really crappy late yesterday, plugged sinuses and a sore throat, so I postponed the long ride of today and slept in (until 6). Didn't feel too bad when I got up so I rode out to Zuma and back on the PCH. Suprisingly I felt really good once I got moving. The throat is still a little sore from the wind (riding with my mouth open), but its better than yesterday.

Friday May 26

road bike 1:35:30 [3]30.0 mi (3:11 / mi)
felt pretty good this morning. cloudy and gloomy, but that kept it cooler.

Thursday May 25

road bike 1:39:45 [3]30.0 mi (3:19 / mi)
so much for the clear air.

Wednesday May 24

road bike 1:38:00 [3]30.0 mi (3:16 / mi)
nice and clear morning. all the rain from sun/mon washed out the air so the past two days have been great. hit lots of traffic lights today though. also met some British guy who was over here for three days on a business trip but brought his bike to train anyway.

Tuesday May 23

road bike 1:39:00 [3]30.0 mi (3:17 / mi)
cold this morning - low 50s. how come I'm biking in three long sleeve shirts but skiing in shorts and a t-shirt?
soccer 1:00:00 [3]

Sunday May 21

Note
was going to go out for another ski this morning before driving home, but it was raining. and thundering. and I didn't do very good at making this a rest weekend anyway.
C • So you're a definite for RAAM ... 3

Saturday May 20

ski (downhill) (downhill) 2:00:00 [2]
Got out for first chair at 7:30, and it took a bit of wandering around the mountain to figure out what thawed in what order. Eventually found the good stuff, and just followed the sun for the rest of the day. Clear skies today, so by lunch time it was high 70s and getting pretty thick.
skate ski (skate) 1:48:00 [3]15 km (7:12 / km)
Bailed from the downhill place and went over to the xc trails, which hadn't been groomed in a month. Yea the snow was a little dirty, but at least there was still 10' of it. What fun are rock skis if you never get to use them?
C • Hey! You're not supposed to be... 3

Friday May 19

ski (downhill) (downhill) 2:00:00 [2]
Downhill at Mammoth. Got there at around 10, it was already in the 70s. But it clouded over (and rained a little) so the snow didn't get much softer all day.

Thursday May 18

road bike 1:39:00 [3]30.0 mi (3:17 / mi)
Thats it for this week. Need rest days. Going up to mammoth tomorrow for the company ski trip. A little downhill should be good rest for the knees...
soccer 1:00:00 [2]

Wednesday May 17

road bike 1:44:45 [3]32.0 mi (3:16 / mi)

Tuesday May 16

road bike 1:48:45 [3]34.1 mi (3:11 / mi)
soccer 1:00:00 [2]

Monday May 15

road bike 1:39:00 [3]30.1 mi (3:17 / mi)
Felt pretty good this morning. Legs felt ok, but the back took a few miles to loosen up.

Sunday May 14

road bike 5:31:00 [3]102.4 mi (3:14 / mi)
Left at 4 and just started cranking out PCH. Got to Zuma at sunrise, and by Mugu it was legitimately light outside. Got out to where it becomes restricted highway, then cut in to Camarillo on some nice flat farm roads. Almost no trafffic for the first 80 miles. Popped a spoke on the front wheel at around 65 (still ok to ride on, mostly), and got a flat on the back wheel at 97 (so close). Cliff bars at 35 and 60, and two of those Hostess fruit pies (650 calories each...=) at 85. Misty, wet and 60 degrees the whole time, which was ok for riding, but made it cold fast when I stopped.
C • Awesome dude! I've never done ... 2

Saturday May 13

road bike 1:45:00 [3]30.5 mi (3:25 / mi)
late start, so I got to play in lunchtime beach traffic.

Friday May 12

road bike 1:41:00 [3]30.1 mi (3:21 / mi)
humid and muggy. and whats the meteorological word for "suspended diesel exhaust". just not into it today.

Thursday May 11

Note
nothing yesterday, had to drive downtown in the morning to the UPS shipping place to pick up a package that they didn't deliver because my address doesn't exist (but which they told me about by mailing a postcard to said nonexistant address). and nothing today because I had to drive back downtown for the E3 show. Nothing too cool there, although I did see bob burnquist and friends do a pretty sweet live half pipe demo as a promo for the new tony hawk game.

Tuesday May 9

road bike 1:21:00 [4]25.6 mi (3:09 / mi)

Monday May 8

road bike 2:41:00 [3]50.6 mi (3:11 / mi)
The normal marina ride, plus a 20 mile out and back on Venice Blvd (basically to the ghetto and back). Bike lane the whole way, some sections were really nice road, some would have been better as dirt. Got out at 5, fortunately its never really "dark" around here, the reflective smog layer keeps things a nice dull orange all night long (on a related note, my lungs hurt). Had the lights on anyway though. It took some work to mount the front light, along with the computer, along with the aerobars all on the handlebars. All the horizontal real estate on the handlebars is taken up by the aerobars, so I've got the computer and the light mounted on the cross bar of the aerobars, about halfway out to the end (computer on top, light on bottom). It works, but having 4 AA batteries a foot and a half in front of my stem give it some wonderful turning momentum.

Saturday May 6

orienteering 1:16:00 [2]7.6 km (10:00 / km)
Training at Santa Fe Dam. Nobody else showed up, so I just made myself a little course and ran around looking at the destruction from the winter floods. The west side of the map is pretty much gone. Everything has been rearranged, from vegetation to contours to some gigantic concrete slabs. Oh yea and there is now a 100 foot wide river dividing the map in half.

Friday May 5

road bike 1:41:00 [3]30.2 mi (3:21 / mi)
So I'm cruising along through the busy traffic light section down by the beach going about 25, when I got cut off by one of those big fifteen passenger airport shuttle vans. He obviously had no clue where he was going, saw the hotel entrance at the last minute, and swerved into the bike lane to half enter the driveway, but stopped in the middle since there were other cars in the way. I couldn't bail left since there was tons of traffic, and couldn't go right because of parked cars. So I locked up the back wheel and literally fish tailed for 20 feet until I shouldered into the side of it right above his back wheel. I don't think he even noticed. I'm actually pretty proud I managed to stay upright the whole time. Some homeless guy gave me a standing ovation.

Hit the goal of 150 miles for the week(days) with 6 miles to spare. Rest day tomorrow, then maybe a long ride on Sunday. Or maybe another rest day.
C • Great week, dude. Be careful... 1

Thursday May 4

road bike 1:42:00 [3]30.1 mi (3:22 / mi)
Getting a little tired after this week, didn't have so much kick for the traffic lights today. everything else still felt pretty smooth though.
C • Traffic lights? What are those... 2

Wednesday May 3

road bike 1:57:30 [3]35.3 mi (3:19 / mi)
Down to the marina and back. Doubled up one of the sections to get a few extra miles in. I think this is a little long to go without food, I was hurting by the end. Although I did get hit by a bagel today. Looked like plain or egg. Fortunately no cream cheese.

road bike 1:39:00 [4]30.1 mi (3:17 / mi)
Good ride down to the marina and out the bike path a little ways.
