9 AM

run warm up/down 10 [2] 1.0 km (10 / km)

orienteering race 20:00 [3] *** 3.82 km (5:14 / km) +188m 4:12 / km
spiked:22/25c

GG Sprint 4, McLauren Park
Moved up again, so back with Jonis, Beat, and Joseph. A couple controls then a crazy butterfly mess in the middle of the course, with one long and one short leg. Beat and Joseph dropped us right away, and Jonis and I had different forks, but did the long loop together. The map was busy in the center with numbers and circles and duplicate controls (and it was raining), so it was hard to follow the course by looking at the lines. I was mostly reading ahead by searching for the next control number on the map and then just running there. But I got to 14, looked at the map to see which control I was at so I could find the next number, and the 16 number was pretty close to the 14 circle, so I read that and ran straight to 17. My bad. I made up some time on Jonis there though.
12 PM

orienteering race 18:07 [3] *** 3.55 km (5:07 / km) +124m 4:21 / km
spiked:25/25c

GG Sprint 5, McLauren Park
The dsq in the morning meant I got relegated down a bracket, so in the finals heat with Carol, Francois, and Matej. Francois had bailed to catch a plane, and Carol was trying to pull the tired excuse, so Matej and I were back and forth for the whole thing. Snuck ahead of him by blind luck on the wrong-side-of-the-house control, and held him off until the finish. Ended up 9th for the overall tournament.

Awesome weekend, the four-person mass start bracket format is super fun, since it naturally sorts you into people your speed so most of the races end up head to head and tight. A few logistical problems within the timing and start times, but nothing that actually detracted from the racing. The maps were all fine and the courses were excellent. 106 controls in a weekend, not too bad...

run warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

orienteering race 18:51 [3] *** 3.68 km (5:07 / km) +74m 4:39 / km
spiked:20/22c

Golden Gate Park sprint #1, WRE
The start sortof caught me by surprise, as there wasn't a clock and they weren't too loud about the times, so I wasn't really ready for it. Took a couple controls to get it together but then ok after that.
11 AM

orienteering race 16:38 [3] *** 3.39 km (4:54 / km) +86m 4:21 / km
spiked:17/19c

Golden Gate sprint #2
Lots of time to get ready for this one, in a four group with Jonis. We were back and forth for most of it, made a couple little mistakes here and there, and he outran me into the last couple controls.
3 PM

run warm up/down 10 [2] 1.0 km (10 / km)

orienteering race 19:01 [3] *** 3.8 km (5:00 / km) +143m 4:13 / km
spiked:14/15c

GG sprint #3, Point Lobos
Jonis and I moved up from our heat, so I was in a group of four with Francois, Rex, and Zbynek. Together for a couple controls, we lost Zbynek on the climb to 4, then Francois took the deadend route to 7 and Rex and I never saw him again. Rex and I were together for the rest of it, I got ahead a couple times but mostly just tried to hang on, and finished just behind him.

Note

Through the snow down to Oakland to crash at Jonathan's place, with a stop in Davis to pick up norwegian Toril for the weekend. Managed to not get arrested.

run 35:45 [3] 3.6 mi (9:56 / mi) +192m 8:31 / mi

Down in Reno to get new tires (studs!) and then pick up Carol, but I had a little bit of daylight in between to kill so I got out for a little jog around Keystone Canyon. Pretty cool place, lots of trails everywhere. Might be sweet for mtb-o, if such a thing existed. Got dark about halfway through and I started tripping on stuff, so I turned back down, but the bottom of the canyon turned out to be nice smooth singletrack.

Going to mail the garmin back to garmin for the $80 factory special, but I also got the replacement logger today so I tried that one out. Didn't break yet.
