Note

Did I post this already?

""I have been running camp and adventure programs for many years now, and I was highly impressed with the quality of Navigation Games as a guest at my summer nature camps. With our options so limited by the current pandemic, they ended up being a perfect fit for a safe, fun, and educational outdoor activity. We could tell that the leaders were truly passionate about orienteering and cared about delivering the best program possible. The activities were engaging, age-appropriate, and thoughtfully organized. There was clearly a lot of prep work ahead of time for the activities and it showed! My campers all had a great time and came out with increased spatial awareness and navigation skills. I can’t recommend them highly enough!"
Stephanie Springer, Brookline Recreation

Note

We have a new employee!

Note

There are three formats in which we deliver the orienteering PE unit in Cambridge: in person, live remote, and asynchronous (an online assignment). The first week, the asynchronous lesson was to watch this video of a squirrel and then build an obstacle course.

Apparently, they loved the assignment and built courses from furniture, empty boxes, and more.

Update to the Board of NG:

First, I want to let you all know that our own David Gibbs had a bad fall on a climbing trip, and is recovering at home. David, I hope you are feeling on the mend!

I would like to welcome our new employee, Charlotte Marshall. Charlotte was hired because we need two simultaneous program delivery people. Charlotte has worked as an outdoor instructor and camp counselor for youth who have been through trauma or crisis. She is trained in conflict resolution. She speaks Swedish. She interned with the Trustees of Reservations and the Massachusetts State House, both in public relations. She majored in Writing, and minored in environmental science. She is a videographer and photographer. Charlotte will start Monday, shadowing Ethan teaching the orienteering PE unit in two Cambridge elementary schools. She'll help with our workshop at the Massachusetts PE teachers' conference on Monday, and at our professional development session with Chelmsford PE teachers on Tuesday.

We have been notified that we are finalists for a Cabot family grant.

We received a $1500 grant from the Cambridge Community Foundation, for which we are grateful.

We have received the go-ahead to start teaching in the Cambridge schools. Whether we get to all 12 depends on additional funding that requires higher level approval, possibly from the School Committee. We are also approved to get twice-weekly Covid testing.

All this week, Ethan and I taught in-person orienteering at the Amigos school. Ethan also taught the live Zoom remote courses. Ethan was amazing on Zoom. I listened in today while I worked on other items, and it was hard to stay in my seat instead of playing Scotty Says (a variant of Simon Says, starring a squirrel), or running and touching something blue, on his command. He has a great presence with the kids. I designed the "asynchronous" online assignment. That assignment was to watch a video about a squirrel obstacle course, and then build an obstacle course yourself at home. That was a big hit.

Tomorrow Ethan, Peter and Anna will teach a class at Newton Parks and Recreation. The following Saturday, they will be back there, and I'll be with kids at Brookline Parks & Rec.

Our Vampire-O may not happen, but I am optimistic about the approach of reinventing it as optional homework for the 2500 kids we're teaching this year in the Cambridge Public Schools.

I am grateful to the amazing team we have. Tanairi has been following leads and lining up potential clients.

The news on the COVID front is grim. Cases are picking up as we head indoors in the cold weather. Be safe. Wear a mask. Air out indoor spaces, especially if they are shared. Look out for each other.
