Wednesday Feb 21

Bicycling 1:35:00 [2]
Took Mountain to the river, then First Ave north to the Pima Canyon trailhead. Coming back was a blast. Would have been extra nice if the bike fit me.
Hiking 5:45:00 [2]
Pima Canyon trail. Guess I did this one last year, but drove to it. First three miles are a trail runner's dream. Not that I ran. Much. Higher up there is more exposure and some tricky footing. I didn't like that as much.

Listened to Dixie Chicks to see what all the fuss is about. They sure have purty voices. Some of the songs were kind of boring, but I liked the easy gospelly sound of "I hope". "gonna live it up" sounds suspiciously like a song about getting high, but maybe I read that into things. There is one song that starts in the left ear only, which is annoying because my iPod earphones are tricky and keep cutting out on the right, so I spent a bunch of time at that song trying to fix the earphones. I loved "not ready to make nice" and am quite fond of "taking the long way round" - especially the way she sings "'kiss all the ASSES".

Mostly listened to the opera rehearsal CD and sang along, to practice, resulting in a number of embarrassing encounters along the trail. I play a security guard who is obnoxious to kids and sings things like "shut your lousy traps" and "she's so strict it's exciting."

Hiking 50:00 [2]
Up a hill near Tucson with Katie, Ana & Peg. Couldn't keep up with Peg & Katie. Felt that despairing feeling of being so slow, which I've been feeling a lot.

There has been a lot of discussion of a possible A-meet in Tucson, with many good arguments pro and con. There is a rumor that some elite Finns will visit for some training next winter. Which some see as a good opportunity for a WRE, and others as a chance to host some people just training.

Tuesday Feb 20

Bicycling 2:35:00 [2]
Hiking 3:30:00 [2]
This felt really hard. Maybe I was dehydrated. Very slow. Finger Rock Trail.

Monday Feb 19

Bicycling 1:45:00 [2]
Bike too small. Bike seat painful. Prefer big padded old-lady bike seat. From Peg's house to Sabino Canyon ranger station. Quite a lot of stops at street crossings.
Hiking 4:00:00 [3]
Up into Bear Canyon, and Seven Falls.
As I was starting out, my attention was drawn by a woman ahead of me who looked pretty strong. We leapfrogged a bit because she took a wrong turn or went off to go bouldering or something. We exchanged some pleasantries. Eventually we ended up hiking and lunching together. She has done some adventure racing, and would like to do more. I talked up orienteering and rogaining - and she would like to orienteer! and rogaine! Maybe even the Big Muddy with her friend from Bend. She's just turning 50. Lives in D.C.; she works for Transition International helping countries heal after civil war. She told me she's taught map & compass skills - to fellow smoke jumpers. !! ... She's planning to get a Bike Friday folding bike so that she can take it on planes and be instantly mobile wherever she is. (Warning - another AP-related gadget to try not to buy.) Very cool person, and super nice. I really had to push the pace to keep up with her, too.

At the end of the hike, an older runner was stretching, and he started chatting with me. Proselytizer that I am, I told him I thought he should add orienteering to his repertoire. He said he'd tried it once a long time ago and liked it, and had noticed that there was orienteering in Tucson.

So chalk me up for two O sales pitches for the day.

Day 16 AACCDDDDDEE -> DDD

Sunday Feb 18

Orienteering race 31:36 [3]3.5 km (9:02 / km)
Sprint 1. Not sure of distance.
Orienteering 22:02 [3]1.9 km (11:36 / km)
Sprint 2. Distance approximate.
Walking 20:00 [1]
OK, this is pretty lame as training but it gets me my required daily hour of exercise. Walked with Matt from his house to Barrios, for dinner, and back. The waitstaff all know him and gave us extra free glasses of wine.

Abcdef.

I had been abusing a loophole in my alphabet system, which is that eating potato chips is not penalized. This resulted in over-indulgence and subsequent discomfort. I hereby add them to "D".

I've not been really enjoying my transgressions enough - I want to take better advantage of them.

Day 15 ACCDDDDEE
Now, I get one "free" letter a week, so this compresses to DD...

Saturday Feb 17

Event: Kentucky Camp / Greaterville

Orienteering race 1:38:44 [2]8.6 km (11:29 / km)
Red course set by Leif Lundquist at Kentucky Camp / Greaterville in the lower southeast foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains. I was the event director, for this and the following day's sprint courses. We had a good number of people (for TOC) at today's courses, but the sprints were sparsely attended. People might have been scared off by the "sprinting" or not inspired to come all that way for shorter courses.

Heard a rumor that some scandinavians, perhaps Marc Lowenstein (sp?) included, are considering coming to Tucson next winter to train. That would be a good idea, imho. Anyway, that got people arguing about whether or not to put on an A meet with WRE.

(I'm actually not sure of the distance - might be less.)

A lovely Arizona day, sunny, breezy.

Nice to be orienteering, and great to be in such a lovely place, and fun to hang out with the Tucson crowd.
Bicycling 15:00 [1]
Biked to the U to try to get online, but the libraries were closed.

Muffin, medium Dunkin Donuts decaf. Didn't feel all that great after a day of plane travel.
Day 14 CCDDDDEE

Thursday Feb 15

Running 8:00 [1]
To the gym. Wore my Sarvas again, and they were ideal, because all the slush and standing water froze overnight. I bought the Sarvas thinking they might be good for a rogaine because they have both spikes and cushioning, but the heels are a bit loose on me so I'm leary of trying. The Sarvas were an AP-inspired purchase, along with the iPod shuffle, the DDR dance pads, and the Hard Core DVD (ordered yesterday). It's kind of expensive hanging out on AP. Which reminds me, I want to send in a check to Kenny.

Running 8:00 [3]

Day 13 CDDDEE

Wednesday Feb 14

Strength 45:00 [2]
With personal trainer Adam.
Rollers, side squats, abs, side planks, squats with arm weights, rotary pull thing.
Running 18:00 [2]
Work commute. Wore my Sarvas. A bit messy out - wet heavy snow. Sleety snow was coming down in the morning. Got up early to make valentine poems and heart-shaped french toast.
C • Inspiration 9
Shoveling 30:00 [2]
We were outside for longer, but much of that time was spent engineering a free path to a storm drain. This was the suckiest "snow" I've ever shoveled.
Note

CDDE Day 12
My beloved neighbor Ann Marie couldn't get out to do more shoveling this evening because she was on her own with three kids on a school night. So instead we finished her shoveling and she baked her super delicious brownies, which arrived just as I was sitting down with a cup of tea, and they were all fresh with that shiny flaky crust on top and honking walnuts sticking out here and there, and all warm and chocolate smelling, so I got a D.

Tuesday Feb 13

Running 25:00 [2]
I was cold.
Note
I am considering going either to the NC meet 3/2-4 or the MO 6-hour rogaine 3/3. The mini rogaine requires less time away from home, but I'm drawn to the idea of running regular courses with more pressure. But maybe I'll just stay home. I need some advice.

Wasted a bunch of gas not taking the shortest route to get there.

Saturday Feb 10

Running 35:00 [2]
Before and after going to the gym. Decided not to pick up any of the litter I saw because I wasn't going to be financially better off for doing so, and it wasn't like it was going to make any significant dent in the total amount of litter in the world anyway. Besides, my motives for even considering picking up the trash were just too touchy-feely other-benefiting and future-oriented. And being an orienteer shouldn't really oblige me to feel more responsible than anyone else does about the state of nature. Came home and took out the garbage instead.
C • Ouch. 7
Strength 30:00 [1]

Day 8: abcdef.

A first: I took the kids to Toscanini's and had nothing myself. Fortified myself by eating half a grapefruit before going.

Friday Feb 9

Bicycling 1:50:00 [2]
To the Fells, to school (to take Izzy to the orthodontist), to work, to home. Other than the first leg, the rest seemed really slow and hard - maybe there was a headwind, or I was tired. Didn't get run over by a truck. Couldn't find my bike helmet; took Dave's ice climbing helmet instead. Hope he doesn't mind too much. Dropped off the free (+ S/H) dance pad from Kraft for J-J to electronically alter.
Running 40:00 [2]
First run in quite a while. Some walking. I liked the few parts where there was a broad trail going gently downhill. I thought about how I enjoy orienteering *slowly*, and why am I trying to get any faster again? I think I'm officially healthy again - just a little coughing and minor nose-blowing. I feel GREAT! (Now that I'm not running.)
Note
Day 7: abCDef. Dunkin Donuts in the morning; a bunch of oatmeal raisin walnut cookies in the evening.
Cumulative: CD

Stand and Deliver (1). The kids were into it. I liked how David gasped and turned to clutch me because the suspense was really building - and what was going on in the movie was that the students were starting their AP Calculus exam. David commented on the racism; there is a lot of explicit discussion and study of that topic at his school. As a movie, this one was not particularly notable for the craft, but I give it a 1 for our family viewing experience.

Books I've been reading:
State of Denial
Infidel, autobiography by the Somali woman who made a film with the Dutch filmmaker who was killed for "insulting" Islam. Recommended.

Thursday Feb 8

Note
So, was Woodward's "State of Denial" a contributing factor in Rumsfeld finally leaving?
Bicycling 8:00 [1]

Yoga 1:00:00 [1]

Day 6: abcdef. Cumulative:

Looking forward to tomorrow's CD (medium decaf [8 mg caffeine - enough that I can feel it with this base of abstinence] & corn mufflin).

Did 6 pushups in a row.

Wednesday Feb 7

Bicycling 16:00 [1]
Work commute X 2 in order to come home & care for sick child in the middle.
Strength 45:00 [2]
With Adam, my PT.
Note
For today: abcdef. Resisted various temptations.

Well, I did get to bed by 10 last night, but was up every half hour or so helping Isabel until around 2 am. So I was much more aware of my dreams, as I was ripped untimely out of them. In one, Isabel was going off to college, and after she left I became worried that she was not really ready for it yet. In another dream, just to continue the Valentine's Day theme, my friend was telling me that she had recurrent dreams in which she and her husband had split up, and she was bummed out to wake up and find out it wasn't true; I was thinking that when I have those dreams about Dave I'm pretty psyched to wake up and find it's not true.

Tuesday Feb 6

Bicycling 34:00 [1]
To school for parent-teacher conference, then work, then home.
Note
8 days till Valentine's Day. Love is great, but it can make us do really stupid things.
C • Over the top 3
Yoga 25:00 [1]
If it weren't for the alphabet, this would not have happened.

Day 4 (I think). abcdef.

Dave & David stayed home sick yesterday. Isabel is sick now. It's a happy household.

Monday Feb 5

Bicycling 16:00 [1]
To work. On to OKS for coffee with Alex. I was proud that I had neither (decaf) coffee nor the yummy raspberry pastry I wanted. Just tea and orange juice. Still coughing and blowing my nose...
Yoga 55:00 [1]
Note
I sent the NEOC Times to the publisher a few days ago. In searching about for a photo to fill a hole, I found this old one of my daughter Isabel & her father at Boojum in 2000. So I think I'll put together a little retrospective today.

DDR 10:00 [2]
Another 10 min in the evening. Decided I won't be ready for any sort of face-off with Cristina any time soon. Maybe Eric.
C • left feet 2
Walking 10:00 [1]
Walked around the 'hood in the morning. Cold out.
Yoga 32:00 [1]
Still under the weather: coughing, and stuffed up. Occasional headache. Possible slight fever. So I don't want to go running outside in the cold. But I really wanted another perfect day so I put together a combination of things I remembered from class. Getting the hour in was tough today and no way would I have done it without the APeople looking on.

[Editted for G rating...] Decided that I might as well make s (sugar) into d (diabolical sugar) and o (other) into f (flossing). That way I can bring in the highly appropriate g if needed to lose weight in a couple months.

So, today, Day 2, is abcdef.

Note
I like Valerie's :::: system. I'm going to use the same numbering for the temptations I want to track (1 bad, 0 good). I need to decide on the definitions. Does a corn muffin count as sugar? Does decaf coffee count as caffeine? Is reading in bed OK or is it lights out?

a alcohol
b bed by 10
c caffeine
e exercise (1 hr)
s sugar
o other

I'd say yesterday was a0b0c0e1s1o0. Made cookies. But I'm going to start with today.

Good night!

Friday Feb 2

Bicycling 50:00 [1]
Back in the saddle. Felt good. I'm still congested, and coughing, but pain/fever is mostly gone and I'm a lot less weak.

For the first 2 miles, from the bus stop to Linnaean Street through Harvard Square, the schoolbus and I were playing leapfrog. The kids and the bus monitor were waving to me at first, but then they got tired of it.

On the way back from Arlington, I stopped to chat with my friend Dave Clemens who was crossing the street in front of me. A few blocks later, Harvey drove past in his red van, and I pulled some ill-advised moves in heavy two lane traffic to get over to his other side and talk with him and his dog Sally on the move. I like running into people I know.

No shadow for the groundhog. Kids were bummed - they want a real winter.
C • groundhog 3

Note
Maybe if I plan things just right I can get my training bar graph to actually spell something out with the different colors.
