| Orienteering race 3:48:00 [3]14.3 km (15:57 / km) | ||
| green and blue courses at Long Pond East (West Point meet). | ||
| Note | ||
| Isabel was really sick Saturday, and had kept nothing down for a couple of days by the time she went out on the white course Sunday. So she was pretty weak and had to sit down a couple of times, but she made it through the course OK.
I was proud of David for hanging in there on his first competitive yellow course - at West Point, no less. It was, needless to say, harder than your typical yellow. He had to do some serious relocating a few times. He got all but one control Saturday and all on Sunday. I told him before going out Sunday to slow down whenever he saw someone else, to "monkey bar" between features, and to orient his map at controls... He's easily cowed by how well the other kids do, so I hope he doesn't completely give up hope.

| Tomorrow (Thursday) I'll be directing two orienteering field trips, one for 1st and 2nd graders, and the other for 4th graders. I accidentally scheduled them for the exact same time, so Isabel is going to run one of them for me. Isabel, and my detailed written instructions. It's like programming...
In both cases, this is one part of a series of lessons and adventures. The 1st and 2nd graders are working up to an O outing to George's Island. We're hoping to include the Jessica Rykken invertebrate biodiversity survey again this year. The 4th graders' experience will culminate in a field trip to a forest with a real O map. Ahead of time, they'll learn about contour lines and predict where there will be streams and standing water. Their current science unit is weathering and erosion, so at each control location they'll pause and observe/record something related to this. Tomorrow, the 4th graders will do a Street-O and a Park-O. The Street-O portion will involve decoding a secret message, which I will share with you, as a little gift, without you having to decode it or anything, in honor of Bad Poetry in General and Anapestic Tetrameter in Particular: One day you will go as a class to the Wild. Compared to that challenge, this game was quite mild: Instead of just streets youll use tons of map features And study the rocks, and the plants, and the creatures. Youve taken Step One in your trip preparation By passing the test of good map navigation. Step Two will be done when you all understand How a flat map can show you the shape of the land. But that will be next week; for now Ill just say What a good job youve done orienteering today! | Giovanni invited me to wear his GPS recorder on Saturday's blue course. He warped the resulting track onto the map [click on the image for the "high-res" version]:
Giovanni's route is labeled "G". The other, thinner, reddish route I think belongs to the winner (from OK-Linne). I drew mine in using a blue pen, and the dashed lines are the GPS. I think it was a little off around 13, but otherwise pretty instructive as to how lame my memory is in drawing my route in. Roughly right; some issues with the details. Or perhaps the GPS was inaccurate everywhere. Yeah, that's it. heh heh. I wonder if Giovanni can color code the GPS track to indicate my "speed" of travel.

| 7 am. I did my own version of a marathon: about 26k. Ran from Nahant to MIT, where I'd left my bike. Route includes 1 mile of biking at the end.
I woke up this morning in the house on the ocean, and the bed was shaking from the nor'easter. The water was angry grey green, with big rollers breaking far out. Running along the beaches was a lot of fun: I had the wind at my back. I just leaned into it and moved my feet up and down. The rain felt like little pebbles hitting my coat. I wore the thick fleece tights, which worked fine. As J-J says, "Haakendukanlaaginakahookalaleemanana." (There is no bad weather, only bad gear.) I stopped at numerous Dunkin Donutses to use the facilities and have a drink. Others I scouted but they lacked bathrooms. Right Achilles tendon is acting up.

| Bill was in town. We watched Isabel at her second session with special needs gymnasts - mostly Downs Syndrome kids, I think. She's tried out two roles with them: one where she is instructing, and the other where she is partnered with one girl and practicing together. The program is pretty cool - apparently the coaches decided a few years ago to treat these kids as serious gymnasts, and it's one of the few places where they don't get "talked down" to as if they're little children. The director told us Saturday that she overheard the kids talking about Isabel when she wasn't there, saying how helpful she was. | ||

| On our trip to Canada for the RAID, I picked up "Loved Walked In" by Marisa de los Santos and spent every free minute reading it, and a not insignificant fraction of that time I was crying, which is not unusual. I liked the book. People actually told each other stuff, and that I really really liked. I had a small epiphany, which was that a lot of good things can happen in a story and that doesn't have to make it boring!
Come to think of it, "Love Walked In" and "Central Station" have a lot in common in their plots! A whole lot. Kind of makes me want to host a book+movie club.

| So I'm reading a draft of an abstract we're submitting tomorrow, and I find this at the bottom, added by my colleague: "the use of any type of DNA microarrays for the purpose of orienteering is questionable at best. Turn-around time from hybridization to data analysis results is still not fast enough to warrant a competitive edge in the field, and data consistency is bound to take a severe hit by adverse conditions like rain, darkness, and negotiating untrimmed vegetables in rough terrain."
Ah, nerd orienteering jokes...

| 5:45 am. First leg. Before I left the house, I removed the opera rehearsal music from the iPod shuffle, and added all sorts of other things. I was excited - first time running to non-opera. Then, 3 minutes into the run, the iPod totally died. It won't turn on; it's not responsive, and no it didn't just run out of battery power. | ||

| I had put some time into mulling over when to bring up the rogaine again with my partner. I didn't want to do it too soon, while he was still feeling low, and I figured he might feel better in not too long. I ended up deciding I'd wait until just after April 15/17. So it's good to see that the mood is improving.

And it's time to get seriouser about a few things, starting with the weight thing. Definitely want to remain sub-G, which means having a goal of 130 by the end of the month, and adding a "g/G" to my alphabet - starting tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'm going to achieve a strict definition, or leave it loosy goosy. It's something like: not much food at dinner; mostly fruits & veggies; lots of liquids, soups and salads; easy on the carbs. And let's take a quick look at those goals from January: Major goals: win the Big Muddy rogaine, feel great all the time, be organized, focus on friends & family. Hmmm... Physical training: * Slow running is fine for now. One long run (>1.5 hrs) each week; one faster session each week (> 1 mile). Work up to a couple 50-mile weeks in May/June, and 2 miles at 8:30/mile. Well, I'm not doing the long run, and it would be good to do that. Don't know what's up with "June" since I'll be done with the rogaine in May. * strength & flexibility. Take baseline this week, and aim to improve strength measurably. Work with personal trainer on machines; yoga class; core conditioning / weights class. I have been doing this off and on; not sure what the baseline was though. * train a minimum of an hour each day; multiple sessions in a day better than single session Maintaining a minimum for the most part. * climb stairs at work. * toughen the feet (by going barefoot some) Need to get going with both of these. Physical training highlights: * hiking+ trip in February (Tucson) * red & blue at a couple of A meets Both are happening, but substitute green for red. Works better logistically. Limit these things: sugar, caffeine, alcohol, etc. Generally, I get to party once a week with things on the Bad list. Reduce meat and dairy. Need strategy for what to do when tired and tempted in the evenings. Emphasize veggies, fruit, nuts, whole grains; unlimited snacking on these. Take my vitamins. Current weight 136; goal 129. Well, I'm at 135 right now. My alphabet count is something like DDDEE. Schedule: aim at sleeping 9-5. Be working or training by 6 each day. Generally, skip the morning with the family in favor of the evening (get their agreement!). I am getting up early, but not getting to bed until 10. And I've been choosing to hang with the family a lot in the morning, which I don't regret too much.

| Walking 25:00 [1] | ||
| A rest day, in the end. Kind of had a breakdown starting with one of my more-frequent-these-days brain farts resulting in a scheduling snafu, and it was a slow tired day all in all - due to two nights of suboptimal sleep - so in the end I bailed on running. But I walked to Central Square with Alice & Lucy in the morning, and then home from work.

| Event: NEOC: Blue Hills West Sprints | ||
| Orienteering race 32:00 [3] | ||
| Sprint at Blue Hills. Perfect rogaine training in that I assessed my competition (no women) and adjusted my pace accordingly (comfortable). :-)
Wore the ice bugs again - have been hoping that they might work for rogaining. They're a little loose though, and definitely not as lovely as O shoes for sidehilling. Good grip. A bit heavy. Thinking of getting ankle weights to run in. Starting to have a bit of anxiety about the shoe decision. Need to start training my bare feet now.
| Orienteering 12:00 [4] | ||
| Ran the white course with Dave, switching off legs. Dave has been running for months and is way faster than me. I was somewhat slowed down by the FIVE large cinnamon rolls I ate for breakfast. I got up early to make them. Getting up early was tough, because I had stomach pains so bad last night that I made Dave take me to the hospital at 3 am. I was doubled over talking to the intake guy, when suddenly I felt fine. So I apologized and said "April fool's" and we left. | ||

Photos from Blue Hills. It was the first kids' sprint I've seen put on - it was pretty cool; nice off-trail control locations. David and Isabel finishing:
Paige & Michael's girls are getting bigger. I heard one of them say to Michael that she wanted to do the course herself, with him shadowing her. They enjoyed playing in the puddles too.
My dad came along and did all but one of the controls on the regular sprint:
The cousins are visiting; David & Isabel took Lucy out on the white course.
Charlie stayed home and hung out with David after we got back.
