| Running 1:12:00 [3] | ||
| This time I headed south toward the most recent lava flows (1600s or 1700s), but I didn't get past the land of the resorts. It was 2 hours before sunrise, and the moon was bright enough to light my way in the darker parts. Away to the south, toward the wet side of the island, there was an occasional flash of lightning.
The good thing about an out and back route is that only for half of the run are you fighting temptation to turn back. There were mild hills to run up and down, and I found myself, not for the first time, wondering what "little up little down" means. I've thought it might be a description of terrain, but I think it was recently logged as training for a really short amount of time, which got me wondering if it were pushups or something weirder like cmc.

But mostly while the kids were playing, I was at meetings. Listening to Phil's presentation about "Nature's Reductionism" was interesting, but a poor substitute for actually being AOWN.

| Running 32:00 [3] | ||
| Roads near the resort. Found the local market, which opens at 7, where I hope to get milk. The resort prices for food are ridiculous. Today is the first day of the conference. The kids will do the kids' camp. Yesterday they checked out the fun pools and water slides.
Isabel has a bunch of blisters on the bottom of her feet from the hike. David has some hot spots.

Wednesday Jan 3 | ||
| Hiking 20:00 [2] | ||
Jogged and walked from the cabin to check out the sunrise from a better view. I could feel the elevation (around 7000'). This photo is looking up toward the highest part of the mountain, across a few volcanic cones that are in the crater. I was standing on old lava flow.

| Hiking 2:30:00 [3] | ||
The hike back out of the crater. This was a good workout given the elevation and the weight I was carrying, and the climb. We walked in cloud most of the way, and we were glad for the cool mist. The kids found this narrow ridge, with steep dropoffs on either side, the most thrilling part of the walk:
Before leaving the cabin, we did chores.

Tuesday Jan 2 | ||
| Hiking 2:00:00 [2] | ||
Hike to Holua cabin in Haleakala crater (where we stayed overnight). It's only 4 miles, and mostly downhill, but it took us 3 hours. The trail snaking down into the crater had some exposure:
We made quite a few stops to re-energize.
Also a few stops to check out lava tubes and other formations.
We encountered desolate stretches of lava and ash.
At the cabin we found a pair of nene, an endangered Hawaiian goose. The informational signs about the nene feature prominently the fact that they mate for life.
Even though they were missing school, the kids still had to do their homework.

| Hiking 40:00 [1]2.5 mi (16:00 / mi) | ||
| To stay at one of the three Park Service cabins in the crater, I entered a lottery back in November. And won! Each cabin has bunks for 8-12 people, propane stove, wood stove, non-potable running(!) water, and outhouse. The cabins are in three quite different locations. I think ours might have the best weather, though maybe the central one does too. The one at the top of the whatchmacallit gap gets more rain and mist. The cabins are a pretty sweet setup, especially traveling with kids. There is also space for tent camping.
After settling in at the cabin, we went for a hike further into the crater, and did the Silversword loop. The terrain was desert-like, and there were in fact silversword plants.
There was a full moon, and it lit up the landscape beautifully. (Though you can't tell from this photo.) I hadn't figured out before we left that we would have a full moon. Lucky.
Isabel and I played gin rummy, and David read his book, by candle and flashlight.

Monday Jan 1 | ||
| Hiking 45:00 [1] | ||
The kids and I woke up a couple of hours before dawn. The electricity in the rental house was out, so we bathed and ate breakfast by flashlight. Then we headed to Haleakala, and hiked to an overlook to see the sun come over the ridge on the opposite side of Haleakala Crater.
